I'm trying to get myself prepared for whatever setup needs to be done once it gets here, since I'm guessing guitar center won't have done a darn thing, haha.

    I just traded for one of these basses. Mine is near mint condition. I am not a fan of the preamp... thinking about swapping an Audere preamp with the z mode switch. One thing I always notice on these basses is how the stain wears off. I'm tempted to try some sort of satin clear coat to keep mine from ending up the same way. Road worn doesn't look so good on these. lol

I looked in the Ibby manual and it says 2.5mm at the 12th fret on the low E and 2.0mm at the 12th fret on the G. Sound about right? Or is that a bit high? Is it an SR500? I think they don't even use oil as finish, it's just stained mahogany. I was looking around for the SR505 model (5 string version), as much as I like the ergonomic sleek feel and bright attack and tone clarity of those Ibanez bases, I don't think there exists even one used SR500 that doesn't have half of the stain worn through to bare wood.

      Dave's World of Fun Stuff, thanks. I don’t know if it’s just that, though. When you actually look at where the damage is, there is a certain thickness missing while the mahogany underneath is intact. • @5urg3x

    I just got an Ibanez Bass...It's an SR5000. Basically the made in Japan version of this one. It's really nice, but the frets seem tiny to me. I always figured bass frets would be bigger than guitar frets. Not so, at least on these. I have a couple questions, would appreciate if anyone knowledgeable about all things bass could answer.
    The dude who sold this to me said he had a new nut put on so he could use flat wound strings. I didn't know that changing to flats or tape wound flats or whatever required a new nut. Is that accurate?
    What should the action be at the first fret? I'd like to see how well of a job he did putting the new nut on, and since I'm definitely not going to be using flats...I want to make sure it's set up properly for my own tastes and strings.
    Mine has passive pickups but has an active EQ that can be enabled and disabled with a switch. I had an idea -- would it be possible to blend the passive signal with the active signal somehow? I'd wire that mod up for sure if it could be done! I think I could just put in one of those small trim pots on the back to control the blend. And the EQ on / off switch would instead be active only OR active / passive blend. And then if I just wanted to do passive only, I could simply take the batteries out. Or maybe just put another on/off switch on the back to directly control the EQ preamp.

    • @j-man72b72
      @j-man72b72 4 роки тому +1

      If the new strings are not as fat, you'd have to get a new nut, if the new strings are fatter, you should be able to file the nut to accept the new strings.
      First fret action should be just less than a mm(1/16")
      www2.ibanez.com/support/help/
      "lbanez standard action is set from the top of the fourteenth fret to the bottom of the string"
      "2.5-3.0mm"
      I prefer a bit more action than Dave typically sets so I don't get fret buzz, I may need fret work to cure that, but I'm fine with where it's at now compared to what it was like before I found Dave's awesome channel.
      Blending passive with active is not going to be easy if even possible without a ton of work.

  • @ericjam6346
    @ericjam6346 6 років тому

    Either I am clueless (which is possible).. or I have learned incorrectly. I thought you are supposed to loosen the truss rod while the strings are on it??? This way the tension of the strings will pull the neck into position after you loosen it. Does leaving the strings on matter at all in your opinion?

    • @onpsxmember
      @onpsxmember 6 років тому +2

      Before you even invest any work, you make sure that the neck isn't warped or the truss rod does in fact get the neck straight at all. If you make big adjustments, you can bend the neck to make it easier for the truss rod, but it should be able to handle basic adjustments no matter if strings are on or not. As said before...check first if there is even a chance for a decent setup.
      Sadly, a lot of bass players never adjust anything and play for years like that.

      It's within the last 7 years or so. That's when they added the mini toggle for the mid freq boost/cut.

      They cut nicely through the din in hard-rock/metal situations....I like 'em. (I'm always trying to crawl out from underneath the apocalyptic roar of the guitarists I jam with...and I wouldn't have it any other way)

    I just hate it when the G string is too high! It gets in the way! Some people don't even have a G string! They make more money without it. Its really only good for looks. They are so skinny you hardly know they are there! But where would the world be without G strings? In the interest of all that is good, I guess we'll keep them. You know what I'm talking about, right? Thanxz

      The new Musicman Stingray 4H is a pretty amazing new bass guitar. They say it’s the same guitar as the one they built in 1976 but it has an active 2-way eq circuit that really shines. I haven’t played one myself but I have some friends that have played it and they all rave about it. The only issue is that the street price is like $1699...
