- Late journalist, Ruben Salazar, kicked open many doors throughout his short life. He was a voice for the Latinx community when there was none, he defied the odds in American mainstream media and clapped back at corruption, police brutality and racial discrimination. To this day, it is speculated his death was a targeted hit on behalf of the LAPD rather than an accidental tragedy.

I doubt this guy was calling himself Latinx. I don’t know what’s the infatuation with this term. Latinos don’t like it. If Black people told you they didn’t like a term would you keep using it? Respect the fact we don’t want to be called this ludicrous term.
He was born in Mexico, therefore he is a Mexican. He wasn't a voice for "Latinx," he was a voice for Mexican-Americans/Chicanos, it our community he respresented. He wasn't writing for Cubans in Miami, or Puerto Ricans in New York.
Chicano is not exclusive to only Mexican Americans. It is the Original Lati o/Hispanic identity for Brown people with Indigenous roots to the land but with the Anglo American experience. Not inclusive to those outside of this experience of life.

Not feeling the Latinx term being applied to Salazar, he was clearly Mexican, Mexican American or Chicano. I think the term could be used by those that want to generalize, but when we know the ethnicity or nationality of the person using Latinx takes away from their heritage, especially with such an historical Mexican American or Chicano figure like Salazar who as pointed out was born in Ciuadad Juarez not Rome.
