Interestingly enough, in Ace Combat 6, it’s possible to have mid air collisions with small fighters, but only on Ace of Aces difficulty. In the normal game, you can phase through them just like in every other AC game. But the game never actually informs you of this. I found out through seeing my aircraft blow up in mid air out of nowhere, and realized it myself.
In AC6 you can even Kill Allies but not yourself with Weapons (try CFA-44 with Railgun and a Mission where you Start with several Planes flying with you, then Shoot them from Behind) - no other AC game I played had that.
Is it realistic? Absolutely NOT. No, I am not saying that is a bad thing. Ace Combat was never meant to be realistic, it's a silly plane arcade game. You're meant to turn your brain off and have fun, that's all there is to it.
It's actually not brainless, though. To get S-ranks, you need to use a lot of brain. The higher difficulties are also challenging in general. It's not a sim, but it's also not easy and brainless. It's just designed as a game first and foremost. That is indeed a good thing. Sims are limited to real-life stuff.
@@Elintasokas Ace Combat is actually really easy and straightforward in general. If you want to bring up difficulty levels and getting a high score then I can turn it around and say simulators are actually really easy unless you actually want to do meaningful things.
@@Elintasokas Let me be clear, I don't harbor hate towards this franchise, which is probably what you think I'm doing. I'm just saying that Ace Combat isn't realistic but that's never the point of it.

You're taking about the series that had stumbled more than once after being major success - this time players loved it, but it's objectively not the best AC in terms of story and improvements to the formula are minimal, so the developers should not relax, take all previous mistakes into account and learn from their newborn competition of Project Wingman, because the higher you rise the harder you fall. And stakes are very high this time, considering AC is a niche game series that spend a good part of its budget on a licensed planes and has not only to please publishers and shareholders with its growing revenue, but to keep its games as popular as possible for as long as possible because they can't just leave them in the stores forever to have a small passive revenue over the years, as those plane licenses needs to be prolonged (and that's why AC:AH is no longer there - it just can't cover the expenses any more). What I'm trying to say, AC are great games, but only due to a niche it has, but at the same time that niche itself implies a constant risk of AAA products failure due to its peculiarities, and the good part of AC success was the fact that there was no adequate competition. But Project Wingman shows that it's possible to nail the AC formula with a minimal budget and no plane licenses, and while being not as good looking as AC7, still managed to be a second best selling game on Steam after Cyberpunk for quite awhile. And despite a seemingky obvious opportunity to capitalize on this success and keep going with a sequel, the developer preferred to expand the game on other platforms and announce an update, because despite the game being much less expensive and not bond by licenses, making a sequel is still a big gamble. Ace Combat is a king of sub-genre of its own, but that also means it might kill it off as well, if the next game fails to live up to the expectations, and no one will step in to fill the void. I hope the developers realize what kind of responsibility lies on them and, unlike their previous missteps, will correctly recognise the reasons of the AC7 success to keep delivering for their players.
There's an old ps2 era combat fighter game titled Lethal Skies 2, in that game you can actually crash into enemy and friendly planes and when that happens both you and enemy or friendly get destroyed
I never realized how frustrating hitting dead plane is until I played Project Wingman. Holy fuck having to start a multiple minute mission because I hit the AWACS I just shot down was so frustrating. Likewise the Airships are cool but are an instant kill if you hit them, which leads to a mission restart which was intensely frustrating. A lot of modern Ace Combats gameplay choices are because of that. It’s about finding the happy medium between realism and not being frustrating.
