  • Back in September I won a "lesson" from a world champion western dressage rider through the WDAA silent auction held during the world show. I couldn't wait to cash in get a bunch of tips to put into practice over the winter so we will be much improved for Spring 2023 competitions. I've been asked not to reveal the name of the rider but they do hold a world champion title in upper level western dressage.
We decided to do a phone consultation instead of trying to mess with the Pivo meet function - it would have been the first time using that for both of us. I sent the rider videos of my rides from the summer, including schooling sessions and tests. I got a lot of good advice! I am posting this video a few months after this ride and I am finally starting to see and feel a change in myself and Dakota. He is finally accepting the contact (a bit change along with shortening my reins has really helped) and coming onto the bit. In this video he still looks stiff through is jaw and poll but I promise it has come a long way.
Hopefully you can tell from the thumbnail that is impulsion has also improved! Look at those toes off the ground!
Thanks for watching and I hope this video helps you with your riding as well!

Why am I on UA-cam and what can you expect from this channel? I feel empowered to share my story and Dakota's story because I know there are people out there in the same boat we are; maybe my channel will help them in some way. Dakota is a senior horse who has spent most of his life grazing in a pasture. He wasn't really broke to ride until he was in his teens. I've had to overcome obstacles that prevented him from being ridden earlier in his life - finances, distance, time, and fear. Now, we trust each other and are both enjoying western dressage.
I'll share any dressage tests I ride, virtual or live (even the bad ones), with scores and comments from the judge. I'll give vlogging a try . . . which is scary, but I'm in this now! Any other horse-related content that I think could be worth sharing (DIYs, fashion, organization) could become a video.
I have ambitions to progress through intro level dressage to basic level next Spring. I'd like to give the WDAA International Online Challenge a try and maybe we will qualify for the WDAA world show?

As a barrel racer, I think a Mike Green barrel saddle sits like a dressage saddle. Love it. My feet are under me, not in front, the saddle is light, and the stirrups are much more flexible than the heavier, double skirted pleasure/ reining saddles. I don't think I would ever entertain any other style of western saddle.

Thank you for sharing what you're learning! What a beautiful sweet horse! And you're a better rider than you think! I'm an English dressage rider moving to Western dressage. I've heard to look for a saddle with cutouts under the fender so your leg has more room to move and isnt so fixed out in front. Hope that helps!

Hi @flashyhorselover and thanks for watching! Thank you so much for the kind comment. I feel like most of the time when I’m riding I’m just trying not to bounce and jiggle all over the place 😂. Western dressage has had a huge impact on my equitation. I can now actually feel my horse under me and feel within my body where I’m tense or loose and how it’s affecting Dakota. As a kid I always heard that horses can’t feel the rider’s seat through a western saddle but now I know that’s definitely not true! Thanks again for watching and welcome to the western dressage community!

THE WAY I WAS TOLD BY A DRESSAGE RIDER WAS, " RIDE LIKE A STRING IS ATTACHED TO THE TOP OF YOUR HEAD PULLING YOU UP" IN THAT WAY YOU ARE LIGHTER IN YOUR SEAT BUT YET THOSE 2 SEAT BONES ARE RIGHT THERE "PLUGGED IN" IN LINE WITH YOUR HIP BONES DOWN TO YOUR HEELS. YOUR HORSE IS A VERY NICE FELLOW AND LOVE HIS COLOR. Susan

Thanks for the advice! That is a very helpful visual. Yes, Dakota takes good care of me and I know he is being quite forgiving as we are both learning together - he’s truly an angel ☺️. Thanks for watching!

Hi! Loved this video. In my experience a cutting saddle is a good choice to help with your position. I used a cutter and a traditional dressage saddle on the same horse and my position was close to the same. My recent gem of a find is the Allegany Mountain Saddlery Co in Gowanda NY. Beautiful custom saddle (custom fit to the horse!) for a very reasonable price. Of course you can upcharge yourself to the poor house if you choose. Check it out!

Thanks for sharing - I will definitely check out Allegany Mountain Saddlery! I would have never considered a cutting saddle, so that’s a great tip. Thanks again and I’m glad you enjoyed the video! 😃
