I have read the whole 3 body series written by Liu Ci Xin.

The old guy who put on the headset is Thomas Wade and next to him is Cheng Xin.
If you've read all three books, it seems like there are a whole bunch of people and things that are being pulled in from the other 2 books. It's interesting and makes sense to introduce the key players in the first season.
the original trilogy was like an unfolding of many layers with new characters emerging as the depth revealed itself. following this method worked with the Tencent series, it remains to be seen if it will work with the Netflix one.
it does add some scenes and characters of its own eg. the assistant to Da Shi. Overall though, it's true to the books essence.
