Unfortunately for Zi Ying, his ruse only kept him alive until after his rival (Qin Er Shi) had died. He reigned for a month before XiangYu at the head of the Chu rebellion took over and according to Kingswar gave him the opportunity to take his own life rather than face humiliation. Playing dumb was probably the only strategy available to him but it didn't work as well as it may have done for Claudius.

Characterisation in the Netflix version was nursery school level eg. Jin and Auggie in the bar saying their job titles. Ye Wenjie's storyline was embaressing - completely missing out the Yang WeiNing storyline in order to give her unimpeded justification to send the message. The tencent version was for people with a longer attention span. The Netflix one went "faster" for people who couldn't think for themselves or wait for tension to build.

Well, The Books used the army of the Qin Dynasty. The Tencent series used the army of the Qin dynasty. Both worked visually and were historically credible. Why did they change it? Dumbing down? Appealing to the lowest common denominator? The Qin dynasty gave the world Shang Yang, legalism, the terracotta warriors. Point me towards the comparative legacy bequethed to the world by the mongols. I'll wait. Also, the video never said there wasn't the phenomena of "military discipline" within the Mongol army, but that no-one has this over-arching impression of them and that no legacy of this was left behind. This made the representation in Netflix's dumbed down version unbelievable.

Hello. Mozi, like many others, is little understood and there's a lot to his ideas. It's great ot have a book like 3 Body problem which encourages people to find out about them.

It is very impressive. Shang Yang is a little understood historical figure. His influence cannot be under-estimated. He should be more widely known.

I agree with all of your sentiments here. The book’s ideas are so ambitious but they are not perfect with its lack of attention to characterization and tedium that is a non-starter for a TV medium. Is the show flawless? Nope it’s far from flawless but it is a pretty good adaptation.

@ThomasMeli81 Hello. That's almost worthy of a video essay. I'll respond to a few of your points - a full reply would involve another video! Here's the funny thing, for a TV show it was average (on the lower end of average). When i say "it's awful" - I mean compared to how good the source material is as a foundation. The show actually twisted Ye Wenjie's experiences to make her more sympathetic intentionally (leaving out Yang Weining's relationship) - I explain this in the video. This makes for a far less interesting character. About Wang Miao "having skin in the game". What i mean by this is that he does have children and a family. Compared to these "Oxford five" - he seems to live a contented life before the events of the 3 Body. They, on the other hand seem positively miserable. eg Jin Cheng's prescription drug addiction. They don't even SHOW the relationship from before between Jin and Will. Another example of constant "telling" not showing in this series. eg. just telling us their job positions in the bar - really was awful writing when they could just SHOW this. All in all, it's an average series which could have been great had it just been more faithful to the books. Tencent mostly followed the framework of the book and was far superior (if admittedly slow in places)

​@@sinolit I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, because I found the source material, (specifically the first book) insanely boring and uneven. I very much welcomed significant changes because I nearly hated it, only the ideas in the book kept me going. The next books got much better, but were still filled with pace-killing info dumps that drove me crazy. I suspect we have sufficiently distinct aesthetic tastes that you will continue disliking the show, and that's fine. :) But here's my thoughts. Wang's kids hardly make an appearance in the book, so who cares that they exist?... Jin doesn't have a drug addiction, she has anxiety and is coping with an alien invasion and her world turning upside down. For someone who prides herself in knowing the world, the fact that physics is "being overturned" seems to suggest she'd take it pretty hard. Again, the intensity of her response is entirely consistent with her character. Taking a few more meds seems pretty understandable considering many people are committing suicide over it. As a whole, they are miserable because their entire lives are being upended... it seems a little unsympathetic to dismiss why they would be freaking out a bit. Also, Will is a counterexample - confronting his death with not a little grace, good-spiritedness, and courage. There's a lot to say about the showing-not-telling thing. I grant you the example of the bar, however, it is possible they chose this because they changed so many characters from the books and wanted to give a few to you right off the bat without any complication. And sure, they could have done it better, but even there, it can't be said that this is scene was anything close to a serious problem. Showing-not-telling involves a trade-off that takes more time. Telling allows for quick exposition and world-building, and they did it in a somewhat humorous way which had the implicit side-effect of showing why the group was so tight among themselves. It wasn't unskillful, and that is what matters... "telling" doesn't represent an aesthetic failure if it allows faster familiarity with who characters are so other aspects of the story can be developed more. And that it did just fine. That being said - many things were shown not told. A lovely example of this happens when Jin makes a comment about the fairy tale storybook, and Will responds with the exact date she gave it to him - indicating his intense love for her that he would remember such a thing, and she gets nervous and uncomfortable, and he immediately responds comforting her letting her know it's OK that it is unrequited. This was gorgeous, and honestly it was so subtle I missed her discomfort that he remembered the date the first time... the series is filled with these moments of profound subtext. Yes, we are "told" he loves her too, but that moment said so much more than that. I found that a closer watching of the show after I was frustrated the first time around revealed dozens upon dozens of these subtle shown-not-told moments, but if you don't like it, that's cool too!. :) That's all for now. Agree to disagree. The book doesn't seem to have been a very enjoyable experience to you. If so, the Tencent Series released last year (which was more true to the book - and improved it in many ways) might not be enjoyable to you.

yes, it's pretty bad for a long list of reasons. "The Big problem theory". Ye Wenjie's complex character does not come across in the Netflix version and her "romance" with BaiMulin and Evans make little sense.

@@sinolit Yes, I really appreciate you discussing the issues with this drama, because when I see those who haven't read the original talking about how the Netflix version of the Three Body Problem looks good, I frown and cannot understand all of this. If you are someone who has no knowledge of the original work, after watching the Netflix version of the Three Body Problem, you will think that it is a story of the protagonists falling in love, several people fighting against aliens to save the Earth, just like other space operas. But the reason why the Three Body Problem is loved by readers around the world is that it delves into the complexity of human nature and the darkness of the universe. There are also those imaginative ideas, but the effects presented by the Netflix version can greatly mislead audiences who have not been exposed to the original work, which makes it difficult for me to accept.

it's really stunning how badly they mis-use the source material. the characters are so unlikeable and dull. Sometimes one can learn about how to make great art from observing terrible art. The series is a lesson in HOW to not write. They always TELL and almost NEVER show about character eg. Jin Cheng's "relationship" with Ye Wenjie. Embaressing

Yes, so far I prefer the one with characterisation, suspense and thoughtfulness. There is an argument to be made that the omission of the Yang WeiNing relationship "betrays the soul" of the book - clearly trying to give Ye Wenjie more justification to do what she did. Both omit things. Atleast, The Tencent version had characterisation, suspense and required one to think for oneself. It's interesting to note that you have nothing good to say about the Netflix version. A commenter on my channel hit the nail on the head about the Netflix "re-writes" - "We've called it the 3 body problem so that you know what you are watching is the 3 body problem". There seems to be too much disparity between the book and the Netflix version to even be called "Three Body problem".

Tencent Chinese version was pretty decent. The budget - or appearing to be cheap - isn't the main issue. It's the lack of respect for the source material which is the main problem.

@@sinolit I agree, that's why I am not interested in the Netflix version. When I said "cheap" I was referring to cheapness in the way they turned the argument of a magnificent piece of art as the book, into some kind of flashy mutant... Definitely the Tencent version is the one I'll stick with

They are solid work. He's nearly as good as James Legge - the greatest uncredited genius of the 1800s

@@sinolit tencent is full of fillers, added stuff that makes no sense and the acting of some characters is REALLY bad. the scene with the unfolding is so corny. i think most ppl who praise this series didnt even saw it. its just cool to praise a foreign series.

closely watched the whole series. Some filler- for sure (could have been around 12-15 episodes). Acting from foreign cast was generally mediocre or worse- except Evans (who was decent). Acting from local cast was good, Wang Miao depicted solidly. Yu He Wei was good as Da Shi. At the same time it kept to the spirit of the book - which is itself rough around the edges. I'm not sure which unfolding scene you mean..

@@sinolit the unfolding of the proton, to make the sophon. the moment da shi entered the 3pb game, i could not take it serious anymore. or the Ball Lightning supposal to take out the 2nd red base. the filler killed it for me. and the acting of young wenije. rest was ok but way too stretched out. its not super bad, but for sure not as good as ppl make it out to be. (i liked Wang Miao and Da Shi a lot too.)

@@franzfrikadelli6074 yes. it was unnecessary to have Da Shi enter the game. They were really going for the "buddy" angle of Wang Miao and Da Shi. Young Ye Wenjie acted like a cold-fish for a reason - she is a cold fish. The representations of the game world were philosophically correct. It portrayed the book content earnestly - if at times crudely. @@sinolit having read comments from people on Reddit who've already seen season 1, I'm pretty confident it's a misdirect. I've also at the very least heard Alexander Woo talk about reading the original novels, and heard Dan and Dave talk about how some of the changes they made are the same as what Liu suggested to them when discussing how to globalize the novels adaptation.

The Netflix thumbnails look horrible. I just expect we need to change the characters to get a black and brown representation. Don't forget the LGBT and everyone is probably sleeping with everyone else. Oh yeah, and dumb the science way down. Uglify the Chinese women, "Evil has a yellow face," after all.

Tencent did aseries last year "Three-Body" that's faithful to the first book . I don't think it even misses a single scene or adds any of it's own.@@sinolit

The Chinese version is decent- if slow in places. It was true to the spirit of the books. The original book series is very good. The producers of the Netflix version don't seem to have kept true to the original material in any way.

no Wang Miao. The trailer completely misses any point of the story - my expectations are low.

I can't wait for season 2 the Tencent series. As for the Netflix version I lost interest since there's no Wang Miao. Maybe he got replaced by an unknown character, a whitewashed or a woke one.😅

Netflix‘s version might have a more dramatic & entertaining pacing towards non-hard core SFi audiences and Wang ‘s scientist character looks like be divided into several men & women …guess what most of them will be killed off for a WOW effect in each season but one will survive till the last final season （book3）I bet is the asian girl actor😂

@@kelllee8509the entire reason why the book follow 1 scientist was to show how the alien target the scientist by isolating them 1 by 1. the netflix trailer show 2 scientist observing the universe flickering... it just not as devastating if you know someone else experienced it and you are not going batshit insane. watching how wang miao breakdown in that scene and how he lost hope that anyone would believe him is what really got me invested into the story...
