The haunting melancholy of the Simon and Garfunkel version has depths that no other version touches.
armadillotoe Exactly.
armadillotoe True. No need for yelling.
Check out Puddles Pity Party... he left me in awe with his cover....
never realized until yesterday, they have two different versions themselves
I have been listening to these guys since the 1970's! They never get old!
Paul Simon wrote this when he was 17. A true masterpiece.
Didn't he write it right after JFK got assassinated?
I believe he did.
No he didn't write this at 17 and he was 21 or 22 when JFK was assassinated.
Either way... friggin' incredible
Writing something like this is an achievement at any age
They're famous for good reason. Music like this doesn't diminish in value over time. They will always be considered one of the greats.
Great Music is timeless.
This is the only version that matters.
Nah the aucustic version does as well :)
@@thehoogard I like the acoustic version WAY better.
This is how it was meant to be heard.
@@f6was9 If you mean this version in this video, then no. This version was made without Paul and Art's consent and they didn't like it. If you're talking about the acoustic version, hell yeah.
Yes
People talking without speaking. People hearing without listening.
Who writes powerful lyrics like this today?
Pure poetry.
And “the words of the prophets
are written on the subway walls”
@@JonS0107 prophets not profits!
@@tonicursio Exactly. Paul SImon is a great poet who can add great music.
Truth for sure
They weren’t just song writers, they’re poets.
This is the only rendition that is absolutely beautiful, the original
Leo You’re right in saying that - the first version had no drums or electric guitars on it, but it’s the same in that the vocals and acoustic instruments are exactly the same recording. The producer took the acoustic version that had already been released and brought in studio musicians to overdub the drums and other instruments.
That is correct and then it went to the top of the 77 WABC survey in NYC
Bridge over troubled water is fantastic. It's just Beautiful
Tami Fuller ..agreed but it needs to be the one WITH Art Garfunkel. I’ve seen too many reaction of Paul Simon in concert by himself and it just doesn’t have the same sound and feel! 😁👍
When I listen to you talk about these legends, I imagine both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel finding this on UA-cam and thinking: "yeah, we did good".
The lyrics to this song is some of the best you will see...it stands to the test of time and still applies today.
They grew up together and sang together from a young age. That is why their voices are so seamless. They knew exactly how and when each would breath. Paul was the songwriter. You should do Homeward Bound and Hazy Shade Of Winter.
I love Homeward Bound.
Written while they were touring the UK back in the early days. I'm British and even I get homesick listening to it!
React to "I am a rock"
Listen to Hazy Shade of Winter by the Bangles. Love their version!
@@leannerwin342 It is one of the great covers I've ever heard. Loved The Bangles and loved how they turned it into an upbeat rocker.
Nothing but respect for you my friend. One of the most truthful songs of the last 100 years. And they do sound beautiful together. Thanks for listening to the ‘ Original’!
Tony Bisard completely Agree!!
I love it when younger folks discover and come to love artists of my era. It gives me hope. We don't get music like this today.
Please react to Luther Van Dross, live singing A House Is Not Home.
"In restless dreams I walked alone. Narrow streets of cobblestone. Neath the halo of a street lamp. I turned my collar to the cold and damp." ~Sounds of Silence
"Hello lamp post. What'cha knowing? I'm here to watch your flowers growing. Just kickin down the cobble stones. Looking for fun and feeling groovy" ~Feeling Groovy
I get this image of Paul Simon looking out his window at the same street corner while in two very different moods when he wrote these two songs.
Very astute! I never noticed the lamplight and cobblestones being mentioned in different songs of his. You're probably right about Paul looking at the same spot while in different moods and then creating two different songs based on those moods. I'm really glad that you brought this up. I'm now wondering if there are other similarities between his songs regarding the same places he mentions.
Great songs
Your reaction is how music should be heard and appreciated ❤️
You should hear "Scarborough Fair"
PLEASE do the Scarborough Fair/Canticle version!
Everyone should watch a British thriller mini series from 2014 titled ‘Remember Me’ with Michael Palin. The last segment is shot in Scarborough, England. They show you what Scarborough Fair looks like today, below the clif that the Queen Victoria hotel is on.
If you go to England and to see Scarborough ask for directions pronouncing it as scarburer, light on the 'er ',scarburrow doesn't exist as a pronunciation for this town, borough is never pronounced burrow .
A Cavell you pronounce it more like bruh, so Scarb bruh. Try and find someone from Yorkshire, or North Yorkshire saying it.
YES!
This isn’t just a song, it’s a true work of art...
Some of my other favorite songs of theirs are: Scarborough Fair, I Am A Rock, Homeward Bound, America, and A Hazy Shade Of Winter. Thanks, Javon, for your great reactions!
Must do these Jayvee!!!!
I too love these songs. I will never skip over “at the zoo”, “flowers never bend with the rainfall”, or “old friends”.
"And the sign said the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, and tenement Halls..."
Again, one of the greatest living lyricist in popular music in the last 50 years. For those of us who grew up listening to these guys, there is no other version. Simple as that. "Scarborough Fair" next please.
Simon and Garfunkel were incredible. Cecelia is a another one of their hits.
Simon and Garfunkel - The Only Living Boy in New York. This became the movie with the same name in 2017 featuring this song.
This song was written by Paul Simon when Art Garfunkel was going off to Hollywood to make some movies. "Tom" is a reference to their previous incarnation "Tom and Jerry" - before they just used their last names.
true poet musicians. i was 13 years old when this song first came out and it hit me like a ton of bricks on the first listen. nothing like the original. it still hits me hard 54 years later. one song that is one of their best that did not get a lot of airplay is 'for emily whenever i may find her'. stunningly beautiful and no to be missed. here is the link:ua-cam.com/video/WaWrdwP1YH0/v-deo.html
It was my first album, after hearing it, went that day a bought it! Still one of my most favorite!
YES! My favourite song of all time!
Hi, I have been watching your reactions for some time now but had never subscribed until tonight. Paul Simon is one of the best wordsmiths of the past 50 years. He has the ability to paint pictures in your mind so you see what the story he is telling looks like. On the album cover behind you is highlighted the song "I am a rock", it, to me is one of a very rare style of songwriting that the message of the song is the opposite of the lyrics. I can only recall three other songs that do this. "What's got to do with it?" by Tine Turner, "I'm not in Love" by 10CC, and Roger Miller's "Counting Flowers on the wall". I am almost 70, grew up in San Francisco in the middle of the hippy days. Really love your appreciation for the music I grew up loving too...
Mrs. Robinson, sat through the graduate twice just to hear the music
As a young guy, I thank The Graduate, not only for the beautiful soundtrack and enjoyable film but to help me discover that this Londoner was not Gay :)
Kings of harmony!!! ❤️
I love this song. It is so nice to see it appreciated by a new generation. They were famous for the way they harmonized.
Very talented. Love this. Great harmonizing. Another nice one from them is Homeward bound. I was just a very young lady then.
the 60's offered this type of music, long lost on most of today's generation.
" ... and the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls, & tenement halls..." SO PROFOUND!!!!!
He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother by The Hollies
Yes, time for some Hollies and Badfinger.
Jovaughn has done "He Ain't Heavy", I think...
Simon & Garfunkel's other big hit - "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Then check it out by The Supremes and by Aretha Franklin.
I sooo love the Hollies, when my brother passed wow this song
What a song.
The other versions wouldn't exist without this one. Credit to the others, but this one will always be my favorite.
You might dig watching "The Graduate", Dustin Hoffman's breakout role. It gives
their music an interesting context.
Such exquisite harmonies!!! Paul Simon is brilliant.
I heard that Simon and Art used to go home from school and practise singing with each other for hours. They would watch how each other formed the sounds, learned how each sang and perfected their harmonies. Talent yes, but these guys worked very hard to get that wonderful sound.
Paul Simon actually said Disturbed did it justice. They put a link up on their own Facebook page (or maybe UA-cam channel).
Now you understand why we Boomers say the music of this time period - Simon and Garfunkel, the Motown greats, Led Zeppelin, the Righteous Brothers, is so much better than today's. The lyrics were meaningful and deep and like you keep saying, they could play their instruments and really sing - no autotune.
I have always loved this song. Another favorite of mine is Homeward Bound.
There's nothing else like the feeling you get when listening to Simon & Garfunkel. Magical. Art Garfunkel has one of the most beautiful voices ever. So pure but with endless depth. and Paul Simon is just a genius songwriter. I was fortunate enough to see them live in 2004 in London when they did their "Old Friends" tour and I have to say they sounded just the same. Beautiful.
Legendary song from legendaryy artists who have transcended time!
As good as the Disturbed version is, I much prefer the haunting vocals of this original.
I love them both for different reasons.
Disturbed’s version add power and anger to the original message
@@nigellawes6326 but it isnt in context of the original. Anyone can cover a song 50 years later and add production and engineering, but Disturbed didnt write the song or know the true emotion and thoughts behind the song.
I don't even like the Disturbed version. For me he over sings the song. A little too overly dramatic for my taste.
@@nigellawes6326 it needed neither of those things... it’s just a shit cover
This album was of my youngest memories. My very cool father had it playing all the time.
Their harmonies were the best ever and are hard to beat. So powerful!
Paul Simon is a great songwriter and he harmonizes very well with Art Garfunkel’s angelic singing voice.
I've loved this song for a very long time, and it's definitely my favorite of theirs. I especially love how deep the lyrics are.
A few other suggestions of theirs: "Scarborough Fair", "Mrs. Robinson", "Cecelia", "I Am A Rock".
This is the most haunting and beautiful version. Feels more poignant.
The original version is on Wed Morning 3 AM. It has minimal instrumentation. This version became a hit single after the producer but a band to it, without S &G's knowledge.
"Cecilia" is a very up beat song fun they did, also it was very scandalous when it came out.I believe some radio stations wouldn't play it.
I thought Cecilia was just the way they sang Celia but it's the patron saint of music.
This song reminds me of the show “That Girl”. Also Simon and Garfunkel issued a warning with this and others are screaming for us to listen
Simon and Garfunkel - there are no equals! Go to their Greatest Hits albums or Live in Central Park for more great music.
It's not necessary to live in Central Park to hear great music 😕
@@truthbebold4009 True, but that's where the concert was recorded!
I love the version from the Central park concert. So stripped down and pure.
I saw Simon in Garfunkel in concert in 2004 and their special guests were The Everly Brothers. Imagine that!! All four of them harmonising on stage. Absolutely awesome x
Yes, they had so many hits in the mid to late 1960's. Every song was a hit!
"I Am A Rock" is a good song as well!
More from Simon and Garfunkel; “El Condor Pasa” “Scarborough Fair/Canticle” “Bridge Over Troubled Water” you can throw a dart and still pick a Great Song!
So talented and such great harmony! You might also like S&G's songs "I Am a Rock" and "Feelin' Groovy (The 59th Street Bridge Song)."
My mom and me listened to simon and garfunkel’s greatest hits on a road trip to her home town in Oxford Iowa in the winter before she died. Every time I hear them it remindems me, such beautiful music.
It’s been said many times- S&Gs version was a warning, Disturbs version was a response to not taking heed to their warning-❤️💛🤘🏼✌️
I’ve never seen it that way before. For me, The Disturbed version was too harsh & too crass. Sometimes less is more, like S & G did with these lyrics. But at least now I see what other people may have seen in The Disturbed version so thank you for that, I appreciate it. Cheers ✌️🇦🇺🙃
They were together for years, when I was young. Then they broke up. Then they were reunited for a concert in Central Park. That was the single best thing I ever heard, with the possible exception of Queen.
The amazing thing about them is the sounded exactly the same live as in the studio.not many people do that.karen carpenter and the righteous brothers are the only others I can think of off the top of my head!
This song takes me straight back to childhood, piled in the woody station wagon, full of kids, singing songs that we had no idea what the lyrics meant....
one of my all time favorites, all the old hits are making a comeback thanks to you guys
One of the most amazing intro of a song ever: “Hello darkness my old friend...”
You need to check out their song The Only Living Boy in New York. That is one beautiful tune.
The first song I ever truly fell in love with! I obsessed over the meaning of the lyrics as a little kid. Still haunting, still beautiful, still relevant! 🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆 ❤️✌🏻✌🏻❤️
They were greatly influenced by The Everly Brothers. You will immediately hear how it impacted their vocals. Try "Cathy's Clown"
Harmonising together for them is just incredible. Have you see the vinyl Bridge over Troubled Water & many more excellent songs of theirs? Just brilliant! I was 8 yrs old listening to their songs. Just loved them all!! That was aroun 1968!!!
One of the best songs of the last 60 years, and this the BEST version, for 50 years it has sent shivers down my spine.
One of the top bands of ever! They are amazing! We are so lucky to have their music to listen to.
Hey, my parents used to listen to 60s,inevitably l grew up these songs.,and after 50years of blues, rock, disco, reggae 80s house, trance...... This really still has that feeling where you're left in awe....... MUSIC makes the world go around so keep on informing the younger generations what's out there. 🙏🙏🙏Peace freedom love. Born in '69 ,lam a flower child🌼🌻🌷
They are among the true greats, those whose art makes the World a better place.
His 1986 African-influenced album Graceland was so good it won a Grammy award. His best album ever.
You need to do an upbeat song with those amazing harmonies-CECELIA.
A simple beat and perfect harmonies. Legendary .
I love your PURE AND UNFILTERED APPRECIATION of music!!...YOU GET IT!🤗
I would have to say that this is my favourite song by Simon and Garfunkel but I love all their songs. They are brilliant together and in the 80's I was very ill and listened to their lp for hours as it helped me to relax. I loved my brothers lp and he brought me my own for Christmas, my son has a record played and looks after it for me. Your reactions Jayvee are so wonderful and your appreciation of this wonderful duo and their enormous talent is great to see and hear. I agree that this song is timeless and I think it always will be. Take care and stay safe please everyone, good luck and love and hugs to you all Mary-Ellen UK Peace brothers and sisters
This was one of my favourite songs in high school. Also from them I am A Rock
Breathtaking harmonies from this duo.
I was in my early twenties when this musical bonanza was served on my plate. I loved it then, but now it brings me tears of youth long lost. I can't believe it's still so relavent and appreciated today. I'm thankful to have lived through those times of wonder and strange freedom for a growing soul.
Those words so timeless.
Paul wrote this song late at night. In the Boxer he spoke of moving to New York as a poor kid. He did in fact live in a tenement hotel where all the rooms on the floor shared a common bathroom. he loved the way his guitar sounded in the tiled room, so he would go there late at night and play. The opening line is about that practice.
This is one of the first songs I ever remember hearing (I'm 30). To see people reacting to it is so pure. This song, if you think about it, is still so relevant.
Scarborough Fair is amazing!
And forgot to mention that’s Miriam Makeba, on “Under African Skies”, who was a beautiful singer from South Africa .
This is DEFINITELY the BEST VERSION! LOVED these guys for FIFTY years! Yes that makes me OLD! LOL! We didn't know how LUCKY we were! Had my teen years from early to mid seventies and was SO spoilt for great music! Thanks for reacting to this! GREETINGS FROM AUSTRALIA!
I remember when Simon N Garfunkel hit it big in the 1960s. I was a little boy.
Jayvee, it has been a joy and a privilege to share your emotions and thoughts on these Songs, that have so much meaning. Thank You for sharing Your World into Music. These songs were from The Soundtrack "The Graduate" Dustin Hoffman's 1st movie role against "Mrs. Robinson" played by Anne Bankcroft. I was 12 and this Song in particular has been a favorite of mine because of it's Truth and Depth. Take Care.
The lyrics are amazing too. Scarsborough Fair is another excellent song!
I Am A Rock. Another great Simon&Garfunkel song.
This album is in the movie The Graduate...a classic
Simon and Garfunkel are amazing and have Beautiful songs❤️...Pentatonix cover of "Sound of Silence" is awesome ❤️
If you haven’t yet, you REALLY need to hear their song “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” It’s a work of art.
You did it RIGHT ! , the "45rpm" was the hit That started it all for them. Sounds Of Silence - They released a version of this without Electric guitar or drums and it went nowhere. The record company did it while they were touring overseas and they came home to their 1st hit single
Classic!!! That's why it's covered SO MUCH!!!xx
This is THE version, no one can touch this. Great lyrics, harmony, and music. The brilliance of Simon and Garfunkel.
It's such a privilege to listen to the songs of my youth with a young person with such musical sensibility. I taught film studies in college for 34 years and miss watching my students respond to powerful films. You give some of that back to me. I do want to know more about your response to Simon's lyrics, which often are a kind of counterpoint to the hypnotic quality of their harmonies. It's ironic to sing so beautifully about the deafening silence we live in.
Outstanding. I have always loved this song. When my son played Disturbed's version at first I was not moved. But after hearing it a few times their version is a great rendition. They owned it.
Their voices together epitomize peace..SO soothing❤✌
I was so lucky as to live through this great era of true talent, poetry, originality and REAL singers. This amazing music will live forever. Ever heard "Cara mia" by Jay and the Americans??
The only song Paul Simon never wanted to alter at all after recording it. And rightly so. This song is PERFECTION.
Yes, amazing harmonies. They were singing harmony together since they were kids/teenagers. (Some of their models were the Everly Brothers.)
This song gives me the shivers/goosies every time I hear it!
Me too! Glad I'm not alone with this
