Celebrate small victories. Your thoughts are a choice. Move towards fear. Lean into your negative experiences. No matter what the question is, action is the answer. Meditate. Breathe deeply. These are well-known concepts and mantras that many people have assimilated, through experience or through training. But what is the scientific explanation for why all these practices and beliefs work so well? What is happening on the level of the brain? On this episode of Health Theory with Tom Bilyeu, recognized neuroscientist Andrew Huberman details the science behind successful strategies for life change.

Please comment what I missed. thanks
Dopamine has two circuits of Reinforcing Behaviours by expected goal Achievement circuit and by frustration of expectation via Disappointment circuit...
@tubo1812 They are indeed talking about Carol Dweck, you are correct.

Andrew Huberman is one of the few scientists I love listening to. His passion is always coming through. Not about trying to be right and all the ego-pleasing that most people in science are trying to achieve. Thank you, Tom and Andrew.

Oh yes. I get out everyday and see the sunrise. I am religious about this and believe that our society would be better if everyone did this. I hope you booked this man for 5 more episodes - this is the most profound and vital information for any human to know. The idea of mastering yourself via mastering your nervous system is the key to freedom, success, happiness, accomplishment and peace. Of all the identities you could take-on, the most fundamental is this... am I a 'cause' or am I an 'effect'? We are born 'effects' - the impressionable subjects of other people's ideas and actions. Some of us learn to become causative agents and others stay subjected to others. IF we could believe in the possibility of being causative, and if we knew how, life would be transformed and become meaningful. THIS IS HOW.
God is the ultimate cause! If you say that you are the cause then that’s Existentialism, existence precedes essence
@@alfredhitchcock45 'god' is the ultimate fantasy for those too timid for reality.

It's true that your first step doesn't move you toward your goal in any specific or measurable way. However, it does immediately move you AWAY from where you were!
I am a day trader and I have lost money and I can relate to what he says.
that is so true 1 Step *FORWARD* is actually 2 steps *AWAY*
how so? because compare 2 persons.
one steps forward (takes positive action),
the other away (continues taking negative action).
now they are separated by *2 STEPS* actually. 😁
I love the way you interview Mr. Belyeu, giving the guest freedom to speak, w/o interrupting, asking great questions, and feedback. Mr. Huberman WOW, very interesting
Tom-this interview was a home run! No question about it. I will be reviewing this interview a few more times. You MUST have him again!

File under: I don't usually leave comments, but had to this time. I'm dealing with PTSD. As much progress as I feel I've made in ways, it weighs on me knowing that I am stuck and inhibited in others. This interview offered the best articulation and clarity, of anything I've watched or read, on why that's the case along with a few clinically supported tactics for addressing it. To others struggling, I want to say how this all reinforces that you are sick, not weak. And to you, Tom, I want to echo other sentiments of appreciation and interest for having Andrew back in the future, especially as his breathing research advances.
I agree. The more we educate ourselves about our own body and mind, the better we function at a higher level.
For PTSD, please start doing yoga nidra. Dr. Andrew Huberman mentions it in other podcast interviews. If you prefer a westernized version, Dr. Richard Miller developed iRest, which is used even to treat trauma with combat veterans in the Department of Veteran Affairs.

@@lytecyde Great point, but can dopamine be completely depleted?
@@noexcusesmarketing We all need rest . i think its about keeping dopamine low as a key to for ideation, inventiveness, insight. If we keep it high constantly seeking we modulate our brain into solving problems only in ways we knew before. That means no novel or tricky solutions ever come to us much. The idea is not to flatline dopamine to zero by all means, we need it but we need to clean it up too.

After a lifetime of insomnia & doing literally everything natural to heal it, last night I did the inhale twice/exhale sigh & slept fabulously. I did wake up many times as usual but did the breaths again & instantly went back to sleep. It's astounding & I feel like a zillion bucks today. Thank you!!!
I love how our esteemed guest has a natural philosophical approach to life and science. On the point about winning and losing, I saw an interview with an iconic competitive (now retired) powerlifter who said that in all his training for competitions, he never tried lifting a weight that he knew was too heavy. This allures to the points of rewarding small steps (by it always being a successful attempt), and to the point about how little regular rewards on the journey or path to our goals and be favourable to the longevity of the journey itself. So for more significant successes, we need the dopamine hits of regular accomplishments to fuel us forward over more extended timeframes, if I'm correct.
The marathon analogy is so accurate. After completing my training and actually running a full marathon, I felt I could use the same tactics to difficult goals.
I'm in complete awe. Love learning about rewiring the brain for our better. This conversation has been the most LOADED with prctical steps. So grateful that I landed to this. :)

Hi Tom!, Firstly Thank you for bringing this episode and help connect with Dr Huberman. I've been following your channel for a long time and this is unarguably the best among best ones - this is LOADED with LIFE-CHANGING suggestions. Also, this is the first time I've literally taken notes of each and every section. Posting my comments here is a 'forward-action' I've taken to congratulate and learn from you and your guest. I'm always fascinated with our brainpower but the fact that neuroplasticity can be triggered with 'focus'//heightened attention' is amazing. In 'Quiet, the Negative Voice' - Dr says replacing negative thoughts with positive ones - but would love to know some examples of forwarding action to replace these and get our energy back. I'm highly grateful to you and Dr Huberman to explain these concepts with absolute simplicity - surely making a profound impact on my thinking and using stress into action-taking triggers. Superb and God Bless!
Great experience. If you're struggling, I was dealing with a really, really challenging illness and found Abraham Hicks. It was perhaps the beginning of recovery. Learning that I could choose my thoughts and feelings and practising them is what I began to learn and is recommended here. Also breathwork. We can all let go of the past and increase neuroplasticity.
Well Damn! This interview has me speechless. I will listen again and take notes
Tom Bilyeu, thank you for existing and sharing. Literally I feel the fireworks in my brain as I listen to those interviews!

I had to stop this interview every 2mins because I COULDN'T. STOP. TAKING. NOTES. It was AMAZING, I now have tools that I can literally start using tomorrow. Thank you Tom, thank you Dr. Andrew!!
Dr. Huberman seems so enthusiastic and excited about his work that it makes you engaged much with everything he says. Thank you very much for this interview, Tom.
I think he still has much to tell about interactions of brain and body. We can't be always aware of what's going on deep in our brain as our consciousness is only on the surface of it. But we can be aware of our body reactions. Each emotion has relative body state and connection works in both directions. If you felt afraid (and you didn't recognize about what) you would have certain body condition, nervous system would inform the brain about it, brain would find explanation (even fantastic), and trigger more fear. It would go in endless circle till you would fully relax. This can bring you neurosis and strange fears and anxiety that you can't address or explain because there is already neuroconnection between emotion and not relative event. Are there certain movements, ways of breathing, internal speech to trigger certain emotions? Which body states are associated with every common emotion that we can address it? How our nutrition and gut health affect emotional state and efficient processes in the brain?
This hypnosis issue seems to me close to theta-healing idea (you can put away all esotheric part of it if you don't like it). Theta-waves of the brain are also associated with half asleep condition and healers say that in it you can reach and then adjust or change your unconscious beliefs, behaviors, etc. Are these concepts describe the same process of access to neuroplasticity or not?
I was trying to make the comment shorter but it's still long. Sorry for long reading if you're still here :-) Thanks again for very nice interview and very practical advice.
Wow! Amazing! I have been singing daily for 20 years in my training as an opera singer. I also do Hypnosis every day. I’m amazed at this info! I will follow up on as much info as I can now. I hope there is a book so I can learn more🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🌹🌹🌹

Please have him over again Tom, because also your questions were absolutely on point here!
One of the most interesting interviews I've ever seen in my life. After many years of self-development, Improvement Pill, Jordan Peterson, books, podcasts and so much more, this talk gave me 4 mind-blowing new pieces of information, beyond some other wildly interesting tangible biological support for concrete tactics that have been proven to be useful or strategies for going about life.
1. The punishment system activating between ~11PM - 4AM when facing bright light (explaining my mehhh feeling when playing videogames at those times)
2. The eye movement from left to right while in a stressful state supressing the amygdala (threat-detection center) & activating the dopaministic system
3. The phrenic nerve sending a signal to the brain about the state of the body about being at rest or not (now understand why when bringing my focus to the diaphragmic breathing while switching the shower to full cold enables me to not experience the cold at all but stay within that calm state all unbothered).
4. The double inhale activating the sighing neurons, which activates the parasympathic nervous system straight away (mostly thought the 4-7-8 for exhaling longer than inhaling did so, this one is even better!)

First time listening to you Tom. As a neuroacoustic scientist, I follow Andrew's presentation and he explain's it very well to the non-neuroscience community. We do know from the study of epigentics, that each cell in the body is effected by the four environmental influences, chemical, heat light and sound. The acceleration of "growth mind set" with highlighting specific frequencies above others found in all digital audio is a way that I have developed (Cymatrax). Totally brilliant information I’ve been trying breath of fire, wim hoff and various other breathing techniques, and feel sooooo much more alive and focused. It’s access to a free pharmacy in your own body that you can control,to feel amazing and be firing on all cylinders . I also use nighttime hypnosis and meditation for productivity, creativity or future self visualisation . It’s so fascinating to learn about the different triggers to alter brain chemistry! Thank you thank you thank you 🙏
