You done a top of the line job. I had one of these during the 1970s it was my favorite toy growing up. They don't make toys like this anymore everything is cheap plastic.
The TV show "Emergency!" was huge for many kids in 1972 and this truck was my little brother's favorite gift that Christmas. Thanks for this resto of a great toy.
Phenomenal restoration, love the details that went into it. The only reason I watched this is because I just looked at both the Tonka Snorkel and Ladder fire trucks I had boxed up for the past 45 years from when I was a kid. While they're both still in pretty good condition, I was curious to see if anyone had vids on them being restored. Excellent work!
Hi Rusty, so sorry to hear some Jerk stole your Truck. The Fire Truck turned out fantastic. As for the missing hydrant. You might want to try and reach out to the Chip channel guy. He seems to have a pretty good source for replacement parts.
You did a really great job. I've subscribed to your channel for a long time and think your videos are excellent. You work very precisely and I like that 👍👍👍.
Excellent Really appreciate your efforts You have indeed brought back the old aged toy to it's glorious days Best wishes Always Regards from India 💐💐👌👌👍👍
Fantastic restore, the locating tabs seemed to be thicker than the other Tonka trucks, was the metal thicker, looked forward to this, thanks for uploading. Mick Thailand
I had one of these, but it was a few years younger than this one (I would say late '70s) but functionally was the same. My mom still has it in storage somewhere. I would hook it up to the hose and pop the water cannon off the lift so it was only connected by the hose. The water pressure would cause it to fly around randomly almost like a water sprinkler and I'd play in it on hot summer days.
I have one of these and a few others I’d like to have restored. They’re on display in the window of my barbershop and would love for them to be fixed up.
I had this truck, although the exact model was slightly different. The water hose connection was shaped like a fire hydrant and used two rubber hose sections the connect to the truck. It was my favorite, even though my brother had the massive ladder truck.
If you should ever come across another one, like this, you should "customize" it to reflect the "original" fire department that invented the Snorkel -- the Chicago FD. It was "invented" by a Chicago Fire Chief Bob "Snorkel" Quinn in 1958, by observing a cherry picker working.
I read the comments ahead of me and sure enough someone also watched the TV show Emergency and got one for Xmas just like alot of kids in our 50's. I just looked on ebay and there are alot of these 4sale.
On another restoration channel he primes the metal and wet sands it before color painting. Have you tried this? Your paint looks really good and from the video I cannot tell the difference. All I can imagine is wet sanding would make the finish smoother. What do you think?
Great build. On a separate matter, if you don't mind. I was wondering where you got your rivet tool from? The one I have( from Gas Alley) works, but does not give me that finished rolled look.
Sure! The boom that has the bucket on it is the snorkel. The power company uses snorkel trucks when working on the power lines. The name comes from the snorkel sticking out out the water when someone is snorkeling 🤿
isn't there a hook up for water? They made a fire engine that actually sprayed water out. With that much trouble for hose and attachments there has to be and adapter to spray water
@@RustyShepherd Oh okay yeah I saw a restoration a year back that had that hook up now that you jogged my memory and he hooked it up and ran water through it. Thanks for the reply I know you guys get a lot of messages
you did a great job restoring the fire truck.
An excellent job Rusty, it's a beautiful restoration. The paintwork is also excellent.
Thanks!
Looks BETTER THAN NEW!

Wonderful restoration of a fire truck that that my younger brother used to play with. I'm sure that he'll enjoy watching this video

Not only was it huge for kids, it literally caused the Paramedic system to catch on across the country.
Awesome job!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Wonderful job! God bless you!
Great job. Better than new.
Awesome restoration
Brilliant work again....
Hey RS
I love Firetrucks!
Take care🙂
What an awesome restoration. Gorgeous. All you need is the fire hydrant now so you can work it. Way to go. ♥😺 Take care and stay safe.
Beautiful restoration. Thanks for sharing and another toy
Nice work, lots of fiddly stuff. Came out great 👍🏻😎
I had that exact fire truck. I was dying to see it shoot water 😢. A lot of fun on a hot summer day. Nice work.
Beautiful restoration. I had this truck when I was a kid. Great memories. ☮️
Great looking Tonka nicely done.
Cool looking vehicle, I'm glad you brought it back. Nice work too.
Old school 👍. Very cool
Great job as usual and nice to see you again and healthy. Best wishes and a big hug for Stryker!

Nice restoration job!
Awesome work, a lot of time spent but the finish is SOOO KOOOOOLLLL .
Well done .
Brilliant.
i have found using a drill bit that is oversized to the rivets works really well and faster for removing rivets. But still a great video!
Really nice job. Be patient about the hydrant. One is bound to turn up.
Excelente Trabajos saludos desde León Nicaragua 👍 muy feliz al ver los VIDEOS DE RESTAURACIÓN 🚒
very nice.i have one to do.vidieo was helpful.thank you
Awesome! Have fun on your restoration!
Interesting video! Greetings from Russia! Like!
Great job my friend! I have a couple trucks need done!

Otra asombrosa y excelente restauración del camión de bomberos Tonka Snorkel (Circa, 1972-1973), mis respetos y saludos desde Venezuela.💯👍👍🤘👊
Awesome job sir, unbelievable
Hi Rusty, so sorry to hear some Jerk stole your Truck. The Fire Truck turned out fantastic. As for the missing hydrant. You might want to try and reach out to the Chip channel guy. He seems to have a pretty good source for replacement parts.
I had that exact one in first grade. All you're missing is the fire hydrant it came with so you can hook it up to a garden hose.
This took alot of work!!! Keep it up Rusty Sheperd!
Well done rusty looking Good
What a great job ! very inspiring. Subscribed ! 👊

💐💐👌👌👍👍
It's amazing, my dad has a fire truck exactly the same, but this is like the 1st.
a bit sarroso, how great it would be to be able to rebuild it. !!!!
Excelente trabajo amigo, es agradable ver como paso a paso desarmas, limpias, pintas, armas y presentas tu maravilloso trabajo te felicito. Saludos
Nice job! From Tulsa, Oklahoma. (We have two more days of ice to go.)
Awsome kob Rusty look like ready for putting out fires lol nicely done mate.

Great job. Those Tonga stickers look a bit faded,
They were made using photoshop.
I have one of these and a few others I’d like to have restored. They’re on display in the window of my barbershop and would love for them to be fixed up.
Eu gostei muito de caminhão que você está pintando
As kid I had a fire truck exactly like that one but mine had the little fire hydrant attached
Yeah, those little hydrants a always lost. If you can find them, they tend to be a bit pricey.
Maybe one of these days put some lights into one
I have put lights in some of the other projects.
Watch my restoration of the Jeep/wrecker combo. I added lights to that project.
Thanks
I had this truck, although the exact model was slightly different. The water hose connection was shaped like a fire hydrant and used two rubber hose sections the connect to the truck. It was my favorite, even though my brother had the massive ladder truck.
They're exactly the same. The fire hydrant is the adapter to a water hose. The two black hoses on the truck go in between the hydrant and the truck.
Juste maniphique 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
MORE RESTORATIONS OF FIRE TRUCKS TOMKA

I had one in the 80s, but I could have sworn the boom was yellow
Great job amigo see you next time stay safe and stay home 🏠 and use you 😷 if you going out adiós 👋
Beautiful job, but why didn't you remove the yellow from the "glass"? Where did the bucket come from?
Yellowing cannot be removed. The bucket I found on eBay.
@@RustyShepherd That's just window tint...
Awesome work sir did you use the same bucket if not would you want to sell the old 1
Hi Rudy. I bought a used bucket online. I still have the broken one.
Email me at rustyshepherdrestore@yahoo.com
A nice job but the roof lights are the wrong colour (they should be blue) and the steering wheel is on the wrong side! 😊😊
On another restoration channel he primes the metal and wet sands it before color painting. Have you tried this? Your paint looks really good and from the video I cannot tell the difference. All I can imagine is wet sanding would make the finish smoother. What do you think?
That's powder coat, which is different than spraying on paint. Tougher and thicker, but not as smooth as spraying on paint.
Yo tengo una camioneta Tonka Ford. Hace poco la restaure. Cómo puedo subir la foto.
Didn't show how the red Tonka decal went on the seat unit? Was that hard? Nice restro though!
Not hard. Made it with photoshop. Applied it like any other sticker.
Great build. On a separate matter, if you don't mind. I was wondering where you got your rivet tool from? The one I have( from Gas Alley) works, but does not give me that finished rolled look.
I had a hell of a time finding this one. I google searched “compression rivet tool’. This one was $50. Keep googling till you find one. 🤞
@@RustyShepherd thanks bro
Can you tell me what a snorkel truck is? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of one of those. Good job on the restoration.
Sure! The boom that has the bucket on it is the snorkel. The power company uses snorkel trucks when working on the power lines. The name comes from the snorkel sticking out out the water when someone is snorkeling 🤿
Thank you.
It's literally the name of the company that makes the boom for the trucks. It can be a fire truck, utility truck, what ever the purpose is.
You might want to mute the sound when filing the metal down with the dremel
Most viewers like to hear all the mechanical sounds.
Where did you get the bucket replacement?
Found it on eBay. They are difficult to find.
usually a nasel type squirt bottle was used when hydrant was taken away cause first you started to squirt your sisters dolls then your sister
then of course you where in trouble
isn't there a hook up for water? They made a fire engine that actually sprayed water out. With that much trouble for hose and attachments there has to be and adapter to spray water
There was. It was a little hydrant that attached to a garden hose.
@@RustyShepherd Oh okay yeah I saw a restoration a year back that had that hook up now that you jogged my memory and he hooked it up and ran water through it. Thanks for the reply I know you guys get a lot of messages
Why was the platformed detached from the crane arm?
It was broken off. I had to find a new replacement.
@@RustyShepherd I see.
Where can I get the riveting tools you use,
Gasolinealleytoys.com has a similar one when he’s in stock. The one I have was google searched. $50.
You could just get a harbor freight c clamp and grind the end to the shape you need.
You forgot the fire hydrant
Didn’t forget it. They are a little hard to come by, and a bit pricey.
@@RustyShepherd Shouldn't be hard to borrow one to make a mold then just case a new one from aluminum or pot metal.
Modern toy fire trucks suck compared to beasts like this.
