My son is #7 for the 88's and although he's obviously on the team opposing your kisdos team, I really appreciate your video work. I get Livebarn clips when it's available but your footage of his two goals is far better than Livebarn any day. I apparently watch way too many hockey videos because this just happened to pop up as a recommended video to me on UA-cam and I thought things looked familiar ha!
It is important to remember that referees are trying their best to do a difficult job. They are not perfect, and they will make mistakes from time to time. However, they are an essential part of the game, and they play an important role in ensuring that matches are played fairly.
I played hockey in the ‘70’s when you could check someone into the 3rd row before a penalty was called. Looked like a relatively clean game to me. No malicious hits. The refs let them play. The best hit was when #12 of white nailed the guy 6in. taller at center ice. Perfect hit. It’s hockey, not soccer.
Some penalties go uncalled, especially when they appear to be clear fouls. There are a number of reasons why penalties might not be called, even when they seem obvious to the casual observer.
A game I think any parent or coach would enjoy watching. Kids this age that are allowed to check enjoy it and sometimes go out of their way to do it. Nice clean game and I was impressed by the white teams grit and talent over the blue team who appeared to be much larger than their opponents.👍🇨🇦
All the players are where they should be. Enjoy the game parents, this time ends quick. Before you know it you're wondering what to do during tryouts and September Camps.
Bantam is a serious step up - 13/14 yo's. It gets spicy because many of the 14 yo players have hit their growth spurt and are *much* larger than their 13 yo counterparts. Skate with your eyes up people.
Hey @hockeyfan What are you using to film the game? I am currently just using my phone, but am willing to invest in some equipment to film my sons games. Thanks!
Hey @4TheLoveOfHockey, I'm filming with a Sony FDR AX700. It's great for zooming in and out, and the 120fps gives me awesome slow-mo options. I've got two Insta360s on the goalies, but honestly, that might be a bit much. You'd probably be fine with just a handheld phone for most shots.
@@hockeyfan Awesome man, thank you! I am using a generic GoPro style action cam suction cupped to the glass for the goalie, and I think its probably fine. I am just looking for something better for filming on full ice from a distance, thanks for the tips!
@@hockeyfan I cant get the Sony FDR AX700 anytime soon, but I may end up saving up for it. I did end up seeing the Sony - HDRCX405 though which is closer to my price range, at least until I find a rich uncle willing to put me in his will :D Either way, I appreciate the response, gonna start putting aside some cash - maybe by next season!
Five Minute Major at 4:10! Contact to the head and boarding, no call, the officials are not experienced enough for Bantam; based on my 10+ years coaching. Did not watch the whole vid so prob more non-calls.
I feel this is fairly typical - - quite a few penalties though - not clean hitting for sure. Some of those are really just out to hit and injure as opposed to trying to just take off and obtain possession of the puck. That one hit at 5:50 - skate flies up in the air - that is when the danger happens. That skate blade was probably only about 3 inches or so from that opposing players face/neck.
Lots of penalties that weren’t called but some real good hitting from time to time. Interference penalties were rampant but the two young linesmen were not well equipped in knowledge by the looks of it.
They need to bring checking back to Peewee. To much size difference when they get to bantam creating more injuries and more head contacts because these kids are just learning how to hit and more important on how to take a hit. My son just turned 14, he’s 6’ 2” 210lb defence man. He plays the game, doesn’t throw many checks and more less reverses any check coming at him but if he had a mean bone in his body, he could destroy some of these kids that are half his size. I’m thankful he has the respect instead of going out there to compete in “who can hit the hardest”. All in all, that game looked pretty clean with some missed penalties.
It just appears to be a lower level of skill where not all players have been taught the proper and safe way to deliver or receive a check. With more experienced referees, there would also be some call made if infractions warrant that! This is also an age group where some player's growth spurts leave them much bigger than others. Enjoy, and encourage good sportsmanship rather than competitiveness.
Agreed. Low level house league players with poor coaching results in the inability to apply proper technique when giving and taking a hit. To make things worse, parents of less skilled players tend to not know much either and end up just yelling at junior referees every time their kid gets knocked to the ice.
Most of these hits are clean hits I am a ref and these are clean bantam hits a few are sketchy but for the most part its clean. Hockey is a game with competitive compact introduced at this level. But yes I agree the hit from behind would have been a 2 and 10
Not really nasty at all. The knee to knee should be dealt with by the coach immediately just due to that being a potentially devastating injury for either kid in that situation. That one is an absolute no-no in hockey. But that can be coached up. But then again.. some kids cant be coached up.
If you don't want To get hit you can play golf or curling, as a hockey player i need this type of challenge and that's how i learned To keep my head up.😊
it CAN IF the referees pick n choose when they blow the whistle on penalties...once the parents start swearing and the kids start noticing it, it gets real in a hurry
Nasty? I never saw one fight, high stick, elbow, spear or butt end. These kids looked like they played a good clean game. Very unlike when I was a kid and played.
Mn hockey bantam league was always the most physical, hell we would have one practice a month dedicated to fighting. Even us goalies i avg the most penalties yet I still made varsity A team starting goalie junior and seniors years
2:08 There is a great lesson for blue #33. Good effort being sharp to put pressure but you should not go just for the hit. Especially when you are a bit late and shorthanded. Give the pressure with stick and skating and do not play yourself out with unnecessary hit.
That blue team is huge. Makes you wonder if it might be better at these age levels to sort out teams and leagues by size instead of purely by age. It's not good for the little ones to take the abuse, and it's not good for the skill development of the big ones to be able to rely purely on size and physical domination.
Correct! Pubescent boys should be sorted by size and maturity, not age. In the 1950's and 60's, my grade school had tackle football in full equip, ent in a varsity that competed against other schools, at gym class from 4th through 8th grades, (kids who did not want to play tackle played touch) and after school intramural, which was divided into over 90 pounds and under 90 pounds, not by grade.
Not like the 70 at all. This is clean hockey LOL! Remember how we learned contact from day 1 and no face protection. Different times for sure. Hockey was the greatest game on earth. Not so sure now.
Tripping somebody with a knee or sticking your knee out to hit them should be a five minute penalty with a 10 minute misconduct and a game to need in fractions should constitute five game suspension
