After seeing these pictures of Mick Karn & David Sylvian, I was fortunate to see Japan at the Birmingham Odeon in 1981on the Tin Drum tour .
They were absolutely BRILLIANT ! R.I.P. Mick Karn.

It's a shame that there was no official video of this track. Mick's 'Dreams Of Reason Produce Monsters' was brave, unconventional and quite fantastic. Mick inspired me to buy and play fretless bass 34 years ago. I'm very happy, yet sad, to see so many of us miss him. It often gets acute. He is quite uniquely loved as a musician isn't he? Rightfully so.

    Underneath a burning sun
There's always work to be done
We take much more than we care to give away
You'll be the moth, I'm the flame
I'll bless you and keep you safe and sound
    Until sunrise comes around again
I'm like a mountain made of stone
I'm like a new day dawning
I'll be here every morning, close to you
We'll sail on a river, way out to the Baltic sea
    Love will keep us together
And the tide will draw you close to me
(Never words so true, never words so wise)
    Love will keep us together
'Cause there's more to this than meets the eye
I burn a candle in your place
I picture the passions on your face
Feelings that rise on a wave and fall away
    All the pleasures have returned
All of the lessons I should have learned
Return again to light, for us to see
You're like the map of buried gold
I search for treasures in your soul
And when I'm gone, you'll know I will come back to you
We'll sail on a river, way out to the Baltic sea
    Love will keep us together
And the tide will draw you close to me
(Never words so true, never words so wise)
    Love will keep us together
'Cause there's more to this than meets the eye

I made this little video on my laptop a few years ago when I was running a fan team for Mick, which was an attempt to (cringe but explains!) play him forward, with him having passed so suddenly. We ended up with friends, family & bandmates contributing so we had lots of photos being posted although these are all in the public domain now. I’m so glad you and Darren liked it, as someone else says it’s a shame there’s no official video but everything Mick ever produced was zero-budget, which is how his final album was pretty much just him. Imagine what he could have done with £25!😭✌️

This is the song that made me discover the greatness and uniqueness of Mick Karn's playing. I was (still am :D ) a David Sylvian fan, but had never cared too much about the Japan years (that's all changed now). When I heard this song I was intrigued by that wobbly... erm... "noise" accompanying David's vocals. "What the heck is THAT?" I asked myself. Well, THAT is Mick Karn.

this pair of beautiful stars must have spent every other hour in front of somebody's camera ----- splendid for us! Strange how Sylvian would be producing such total musicality and then anti-music almost in the same breath. Secrets must be one of the finest recorded achievements of all time by anyone and seems to put most of his other work in the shade with minor exception of Tin Drum and Brilliant Trees and current such as ‘Do You Know Me Now?’. Hey but it's all great. Hope Sylvian is well.

My Father took his life in when I turned 6.
Everyone tells me he was a legend and a fuckin rockstar.
Before he left us, he kneeled down and told me that all the boxes in the closet were mine. And I said ok.👌
Today, I understand, he was passing his torch to me. I never needed to forgive him for anything. I don’t need to know why he left. He just didn’t see himself fit for this world. The boxes I inherited were a collection he spent hundreds of hours in hundreds of record stores from all over the world. A collection of music I would have never known. So eclectic so diverse, his taste has inevitably has rubbed off on me. I’m proud to acquire such a unique ear. And the words and sounds etched in the vinyl feels like he’s singing to me, about how he felt. And I’m so grateful to be able to understand how he felt in certain times of life though spread apart through time he’s with me and it’s okay if I feel like he did...
But I have a legacy to live for. I’ve taught myself to sing and pluck strings uniquely and no one can take it away from me.
So when I’m on stage singing about what you told me with your last words on the note you left me, I’ll know it’s you shouting me name!

David and Mick were friends, but I suspect only when David could dictate and control everything the band did, everything the band played. If Mick pushed back it would create friction, especially if it conflicted with David's vision. I read quite a bit on Mick's experience with Japan and it was definitely bitter sweet. Shame how this always seems to happen with many bands.

@@patrickmurphy1803 Mick had been negative about David and accused him of being dictatorial, but according to the other members Mick wasn't exactly a saint either, and neither was completely without fault. Also, Steve Jansen and Rick Barbieri have gone on record many times as saying that, far from being the tyrant that Mick painted him as, David was actually very shy and retiring... David's two daughters and also his ex-wife's son from her previous relationship still have a good relationship with David, and have been positive about him too... I think Mick's troubles were very deep-seated, and rooted far beyond any issues he and David had with each other

Loved Japan and Rain Tree Crow... I don't know what it is about this collaboration between David and Mick, but there's something "missing" from this song IMO - its not a "bad" song, but just doesn't quite have the same vigour as Japan, yet isn't quite as ethereal as Rain Tree Crow's 1991 album either... Perhaps it'll grow on me in time...

I'm a fan of Japan, own lots of their vinyl from the 80's... I've never heard this song! What album or single had it?

@@penelopehughes-jones5265 thanks, I did manage to find it... I was surprised I didn't know about that album! If you follow the work of the other guys in the band, check out 'dolphin brothers' album called 'catch the fall'. Steve Jansen and Richard Barbieri side project...

There's always two sides to every story... The other members of Japan have asserted that neither party was totally without fault, and Mick wasn't a complete saint either
