Outer Wilds Retrospective - The Answer in the Eyes

- A video essay looking at what came before the species in both Outer Wilds and DLC Echoes of the Eye.
I walkthrough the symbolism and meaning of why the creators of Outer Wilds added eyes to each consecutive species.
Outer Wilds is a great game with a lot of hidden depth to it, I've seen a lot of good theories out there of the lore, but perhaps not the meaning behind the lore in terms of analogy.
I hope you enjoy! - Ігри
One eye invited
Two eyes tried to hide
Three eyes tried to find
Four eyes found
And don't forget the 0 eyed angler fish. The blind species only driven by their base nature to eat.
There must be something in there with Anglerfish having eyes but not seeing (enemies) to jellyfish having bodies but no eyes (helpful). Makes me realise how much attention was put on eyes
okay, i like this of course, but theres something i dont fully agree with
in 3:20 you say the eye is "evil" or something similar, but the eye has no will, it seems too just exist, sort of like a universal reset button, not good nor evil, also, the eye is shown too survive the reset, which explains how the signal is older then the universe itself, because its not a new eye creating a new signal, its just the same eye doing the same signal its always been doing
of course this might mean the eye signal blocker is still in orbit, which would be an issue for the next universe, but they'll hopefully figure it out
The eye of the universe is also technically one eye
That's actually cool that someone else make same conclusions as I did. I also could add to this theory, that in the end, where we see new campfire we can observe, on some conditions (all travelers together) insect-like people (new "Hearthians"). In scope of your words and this theory that move Universe acknowledgment even more. And we can see it only if we do all things right and know everything possible.
Slightly goes away from this theory is appearance on new "owlks" - two-eyes creatures, but it could be like "those, who have knowledge and still afraid"
Also, the actual praying mantises, as well as many other insects, have five eyes in a sense (two main complex ones, but also 3 additional light sensors)
Hello from _THE FORUMS_
Another good video! I appreciate your _insight_ into the _SYMBOLISM_ of sight organs.
Thanks Sam - coming up next is the symbolism and 10-hour lore video on the jellyfish
@@jimmyyrob A 10-hour video? How shocking! Or... Insulating?
It's not a new theorie but more a remark/ add on from yours, if we take the 4 truths from 1:47, we can see in my opion how they all fit well with the number of eyes for each thing/species. The eye is the "origin" of the suffering but also it's truth, the bird people have both the truth of it existence and how it can cause suffering, the nomai well obviously have also in another way how it can cause suffering and the truth of it's end (even though a bit incomplete) and well earthians have all four has you said. Anyway great video, come for the reddit and I'm happy to have been tempted by my curiosity (as anyone how loves Outer Wilds does i guess XD) ^^
That's a really interesting take - and one I hadn't thought of as a parallel to the eyes. It makes me think more and more the "eye design" was a thought out metaphoric choice
Great video. Yeah, you definitely deserve more subs. I love tying the game into real world beliefs and comparing them
Thanks man I appreciate your comment
This is a fascinating perspective that makes the world of Outer Wilds even better. Thanks!
Glad I found this channel, the videos are pretty good for someone who's just starting out. Best of luck dude, I can already tell you're going to get way bigger
this was so interesting!!! i love all the ways you can interpret this game
nice theory! another interpretation that I've had over the game is that the eye of the universe being activated by the protagonist is the first "universal reset" and that every universe lasts around 22 billion years. This is symbolic of the loop that the nomai made at around the end of the first universe, and in the post-credit's scene it says "14.3 billion years later..." and shows the progress of new species. I think the 7.7 billion years is enough for the species to evolve with similar technology to nomai and elk in order to get to the 2nd universe's eye of the universe. Also I feel like the eye of the universe is a location, but there is a eye of the universe outside of reality (like how heaven is a spiritual place outside of reality, but there is the physical place where people ascend to in Christianity) that designed the vision of the ancient glade and such to match our experiences in the game.
it is generally accepted þat þe bird people are called þe 'Owelk'
That makes sense...I read somewhere that the sound design is a mix of elk and owl noises which is really cool if true
I usually see it without the e so just Owlks
oh wow I’ve never seen someone use þ in writing! Do you speak another language which usually uses it or just prefer it to th?
i figured the more eyes were to do with the observation mechanics of outer wilds
quantum, light sensitive tech, controls moved by vision, the general aspect of the game being that you affect very little, just observe and learn
What "out there" theories do you have about Outer Wilds?
Dude from a channel this size solid vid 👍
What are you talking about I have 8 whole subscribers now?? Cheers man 🥰
Yup. Very good video
You are too kind good sir
just to say that I was here before he blew up

Why did you call the Eye of the Universe evil in this video? I don't think that's correct. Only through a conscious individual observing the Eye can the universe be reborn and entropy be reset. It's a good thing, not an evil one.
Also, each species didn't give a helping hand to the next. The Nomai found the Eye despite the efforts of the Strangers, not because of them.
While I agree the Nomai found the Eye despite the efforts of the Stranger and the Owl People, they heard the signal precisely because The Prisoner set it free briefly. Without him, the Nomai would have never known about the Eye, and we would have never been able to observe it
Harth. Not herth. Like heart. Hearth. Same pronunciation. I'll sub as an apology for the pronunciation lesson.
