A wonderful player, don’t know why he drank so much. There was a story, Rampal was playing at Carnegie Hall, completely wasted. Gave a remarkable concert, walked off stage. Marcel Moyse was there backstage. Moyse said to Rampal, when are you going to stop playing like a fool! Tom Nyfenger was there too. They were all friends. Tom turned Rampal around to go back onstage to take his bows. 😂

I know nothing about Rampal drinking or the veracity of this story. But watching this closeup video reminds me how wonderful Tom Nyfenger's imitation of Rampal's playing was! He captured so much of Rampal's body use, facial expression and sound. I would have loved to see him demonstrate to Rampal.
This performance is a breath fresh air. It's performed with that refined French classicism of the time, the easy technique of these two great musicians. Nothing is ever exaggerated, yet all the phrasing and color is there. Technique has of of course advanced over the years, but the simple, refined, musical honesty is mostly gone.

The story was told from Tom Nyfenger

@@richardvolet3970 Tom Nyfenger told that story to my uncle who was his student. Tom also drank, not to huge excess. He invited my uncle to his house on a sat morning for breakfast. Steak and eggs with red wine. They then began playing duets. Tom mentioned that the joyful, free feeling after the wine should always be there when playing.

@@richardvolet3970I agree playing today lacks the clarity of the french school, even the lineage of Kincaid had a substance that has diminished drastically today in my opinion.

Everyone should watch Rampal's hands and arm positions. No extraneous motions interfering with embouchure and lip control. No dancing fingers (except for the left pinkie).

@Alex Alves, May I point out that there are plenty of changes going on. But because of the face on aspect of the film and its age it is difficult to see. If you watch the video of him playing the Enesco Cantabile and Presto where there are shots from the side you can see it much better.
