Thanks again, Clifford. I love Calvino, too. There is a great interview with him, here on UA-cam. I just watched it yesterday. What a fascinating man, what an incredible process he goes through to creates these incredible unique stories. Grateful to you for taking the time to highlight him. Love your work. Keep on Truckin' - eh.
Yes! I love this book and am SO glad you reviewed it! Edit: Since we're on the subject of Calvino, are you ever considering reviewing If On A Winter's Night A Traveler?
Always watch your videos. I only use UA-cam to comment positively and encourage people and you seem like a great guy. Hope you get loads more subs you deserve it man ! Regards from southern France.
Thanks for this. Baron in the Trees by Italo Calvino is my favorite book of all time. Invisible Cities was one of the first books that got me searching for important books long term.
I know I'm late to the punch here but I feel like the "Model city that I deduce all others" that Polo describes to Kublai is Venice. Every city in the book is simply Venice, told from a different angle, a different feeling, a different memory.
Perhaps a listen to The Lonesome Crowded West - Modest Mouse would be a good recommendation to Invisible Cities. It covers the theme of the growth of the West US during the 90s. Everything changed. Soon the chain reaction started in the parking lot Waiting to bleed on the big streets That bleed out on the highways and Off to others cities built to store and Sell these (plastic) rocks Well aren't you feeling real dirty Sitting in the parking lot Sitting in the parking lot - Convenient Parking
Nice timing. I had a friend recommend this to me last week and I just acquired a copy yesterday. Looks like I should put it near, if not at the top of my pile.
Recommendation - The Tenant by Roland Topor (He acted in Herzog's - Nosferatu & Volker's -Swans In Love, His fav subject when it came to Theatre was Ubu Roi, His feature film Marquis based on life of Sade) Channel completely set up to review this one or the movie version of it by Roman Polanski
Oh man, I just finished this and was delighted to find that you'd done a review. What a brilliantly enigmatic collection of prosetry. I would love to sample that Paris Review article you mention, but it appears that the link has since expired. Any idea as to where we could find it nowadays?
New subscriber whose creative writer major graduating from Columbia College. Love writing & reading. Your break down of this book review is intriguing and nonboring. Thank you very much.
Want to read this, Our Ancestors, Cosmicomics and a bunch of his non-fiction like "Why read the Classics?" since reading "If On A winter's night...". Really enjoyed this review.
Invisible Cities is one of those books that should be buried underground, for preservation. I finished it a few months ago and I still think about it daily
A truly great book, if you love Invisible Cities try Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman, brilliant dreamlike take on Einstein and the creative process.
Have you read Einstein's Dreams by Alan Lightman? It's very similar to Invisible Cities except it deals with time rather than cities, and is waaay better in my opinion. Though IC was still great.
Couldn't find Calvino's "If on a Winter's Night a Traveller" interesting. Found it too artificial whether it is post modernism or something else. I love books like Zorba the Greek or One Hundred Years of Solitude
Hey man i'd like to recommend a book called The Marbled Swarm by Dennis Cooper, very strange read. It's all to do with cannibalism, pedophilia, necrophilia, incest and about everything else you can imagine. It's great but very hard to get through.
Well good luck man. I'd also like to recommend another UA-cam channel (if you haven't already heard of them) they're called Red Letter Media. They are criminally underrated and they're basically the only film review channel that actually goes into detail about why hollywood movies are shit now. They're Suicide Squad review is amazing.
the book is really cool ... especially as a night read, weaving magic realism and pot-pourri of make-believe history .. Yet Kublai Khan was not so cool, nor intelligent nor patient...
Why do so many English speakers mispronounce Calvino’s first name. Italo has an emphasis on the I not the A. Please take the time to learn how to pronounce a person’s name if you are going to do a video about them.

I'm reading it right now! So good to have a review of yours of a book I not only know, but am reading
enjoying the new editing. adds a lot to the review.

Wow, that passage on travelling at 4:12 is incredible. I absolutely love travelling.

One of my favorites. Turned me on to Italo Calvino and inspired a short story of my own. Loved it. Currently reading "The Castle Of Crossed Destiny"
"To seek the sacred river Alph
To walk the caves of ice
To break my fast on honeydew
And drink the milk of Paradise...'"
Clifford the video editing of this one is incredible, and those gorgeous backgrounds and musics!
Glad you're enjoying!

This seems like such a beautiful book. I'll surely be adding this to my Christmas Wishlist. Thank you very much for this.
You're absolutely welcome.
I learned of this from Gore Vidal who considered it his favorite book. Great review.
Honestly, I could not like this more. Thank you.
One of the best reviews of this amazing book! Fantastic job! I loved the comparison to Borges.
I go to UCSB & this was a book assigned for a class -- What a coincidence that Santa Barbara was mentioned in the video!

This is a great, fascinating review! Finishing the video, I want to grab the novel and start reading it!
Right now I have the 2n edition of this book (IT), in hardcover too!

Thanks for covering this one, man! Absolutely one of the greatest books I've ever read - Calvino is an absolute fucking genius.
Want to read this, Our Ancestors, Cosmicomics and a bunch of his non-fiction like "Why read the Classics?" since reading "If On A winter's night...".
Really enjoyed this review.
Love that one! My favourite of Calvino ist "If on a Winter's Night a Traveller" though.
Just got the Folio Society one
Seems more like a dialogue (like The Analects) but i guess i'll find out. Thanks for the review
I have a recomendation, Juan Carlos Onetti's Juntacadáveres (Body Snatcher). Read before you die.
I was always meaning to read it. Maybe I should finally pick it up. Love the development lately.
Invisible Cities is one of those books that should be buried underground, for preservation. I finished it a few months ago and I still think about it daily
He's talking about either The Book Den or Chaucer's in SB. I could tell you stories.....
editing is fantastic.
well this is odd, im reading this book right now!
PLEASE be the voice of the Audiobook for this, pleeeaase
Kind of reminds me of Harrison's Viriconium.

I would really love to hear your opinion on the Book ''The Book Thief'' by Markus Zusak, good or bad. Cheers, and a happy holidays.
thanks a lot! made it easier to understand - someway
Have you read Silence by Shusaku Endo, its a great time to review it because Scorsese is about to adapt it.
Great video as always man. Hope to see you read some Russian lit in the future.
I read this book like 20 years ago. I .... don't understand the fuss around it. but I'm not a book person to begin with anyway

I fucking love Invisible Cities.
I Love Calvino!
I Think you need to try a Braziliam Author called Machado de Assis, The greatest novelist in portuguese language.
Eduardo Lages yes I've got him going right now
Which one?
My favorites are: 1 place - Phostumous memoirs of Bras Cubas, 2 - Dom Casmurro
I hope to see a video about the book you're reading :D
Bras Cubas

Reading it right now, for real.
Fucking hell, that's weird. You enjoying it so far?
