The biggest mistake I ever made: I believed that I couldn't have a career doing art, so I quit drawing for almost 8 years. It wasn't until I was stressed out at my job that I started drawing again to reduce my stress that I was advised I should start to pursue it seriously.

But Stan, your anatomy course is amazing! I am a physician. I’ve done a cadaver dissection and I “know” human anatomy. But your course taught me how to think about anatomy as an artist, and how to use it that way. It is a treasure.

  • @JoeSakana

The advanced anatomy course is exactly why your channel is so good. It wasn't a mistake; it filled a niche in the market. Tutorials on drawing basics are really easy to come by elsewhere. Anatomy for artists is not, and many people are grateful for it.

speaking of irony, Marshall started being awful with perspective and anatomy; and after redoing his education, he teaches that to other artists. keep it up, everyone. Also, the kangaroo story is really funny to me because I thought for years that in order to be a good artist you need to master everything, and knowing that that's not true gave me some kind of peace and it was very funny too, so I'm thankful to you proko for your kangaroo, i still think that you are a great teacher and artist

I feel like it's easier to find a "basics course" most anywhere, but Anatomy is very hard to learn and yours, I find, is very well explained. Oh, please!
You guys make a composition class.
    It would be great!
Oh, and as for the anatomy course.
I studied art, in Italy, in a high school of art (an ISA).
They didn't teach anatomy, in that school, the most we had was a substitute professor who made us copy an anatomy table of the hand.
For years (many years) I tried to learn through manuals, but I had no models to draw, no decent photos, nothing.
I used to copy mine by hand and foot.
When I discovered the course on yutube I don't exaggerate to say that my life has changed.
And it was exactly when I needed it: I had lost my job as an editorial graphic designer (fired because I had fallen ill because of the stress caused by the work) this totally destroyed my confidence in my abilities.
Three years ago a friend who works as a comic artist convinced me to go to Lucca Comics (the most important fair in Italy) to show my portfolio to editors.
The feedback was positive but I realized that I was absolutely not ready to work as a professional illustrator.
I wanted to join the academy but my husband said "Are you kidding me? A friend who teaches at the academy of our city wanted to offer you to teach digital painting!" This, along with a little research on the teachers of that academy made me realize that no, I would not learn anything more than what I already knew, from them.
So I started looking on youtube.
First I found The Croquis Cafe, which is great for practice but didn't make up for my lack of bases.
Then I stumbled upon the video on how to draw the head from various angles.
I signed up for the channel, looked at another couple of lessons and visited the site, where I took the course in figure drawing, portrait and anatomy. (I think there was a package that included all three of them)
It's been two years and I've improved a lot more than I could have expected.
I've also started taking Aaron Blaise's courses and I'm recovering my confidence, bit by bit.
In short, I will never thank you enough for having created this course, which is extraordinary and I continue to suggest to everyone.

It’s so important to highlight the struggles as well as the achievements and loved Marshall’s story about needing to go back to education. One of my biggest mistakes is not knowing when to stop. My high school art teacher would always say: The marks of an artist are problem solving and knowing when to stop.
I look back on some of my pieces and cringe because of how overworked they are!
I love Marshall’s voice! He definitely has the voice for voice acting. “I’d sure like to see that kangaroo...” long pause. Silence. Hahaha!

Hey Stan. It makes sense what you said about the anatomy course, but I’m glad you made it in that order. I found your anatomy course years ago and it was too advanced for me. At that time, I was a high schooler and probably would have never looked at a drawing basics course. I kept it in the back of my head, and now I’m in my 2nd year of art college and using it to supplement my other anatomy courses. You’ve helped me so much. I’m glad I came back to it and had seen it years ago and had strived to be as good as you. ~Stella

Stan, there were many materials available in drawing basics already, but there was not a single good one you could access anywhere for anatomy. Yours was the first resource to enable tons of people with no thick wallets to learn about anatomy professionally. Sure, there were books like Bridgman but those books require some foundations, and maybe a teacher to explain them, while your videos are accessible even to those with no prior education.

Yes, the archetypal hero- studied this in grad school many moons ago. Each student took a traditional classic lit and analyzed whether the central character qualified as a hero in one respect or the other, you could make the case that each did- that's what stands the test of time. We identify with the struggle. Great comments here.

Celie from color Purple, not Sealy. Anyway, man do I love these episodes. Please never stop this, listening to you two discuss art and everything around it has truly been a blessing. It might not seem so at times but these episodes are gems.

Your anatomy course was what got me watching you! And I have only really been drawing for a few months.
It helped me in ways I never would have thought.

Proko, I have been an illustrator for 35 years and am right handed. A few years ago, I decided to try to learn to draw with my left and to my utter surprise I draw better with my Left! It is more intuitive and my imagination is activated unlike my right. Also, my sense of proportion is better. I have not figured out how to use this, I still feel much more comfortable with my right. You might give it a try just to see how is helps you drawing from imagination.

My biggest mistake was not getting a mentor sooner than i did. Being serious in your art career means being a master, and I realized that you can't be a master in a vacuum but instead you should learn directly from I master by working with one.

You should make the podcast at least hour long, and hopefully Marshall would have more time to share his experience.

Manga Studio is the English language version of Clip Studio Paint. It's made by Celsys which is a Japanese company and localized by Smith Micro. Most likely it was to unify the name brand and avoid confusion with the two different names. Celsys used to have two programs, ComicStudio and IlustStudio, focusing on comics and illustration respectively. They later combined the two into Clip Studio Paint.
