Wowww you all really wanted to know about makeup! I hope this helps!
First part is a discussion on why it's important to wear makeup for cosplay, second part is a tutorial of how I do my basic cosplay makeup. (The tutorial starts at 2:50 if you want to skip there right away. :3)
Steps in order: primer (face and eyes), BB cream, eyeshadow, eye liner, mascara, coverup, contouring with bronzer, loose powder, blush, and lipstick.
Makeup Gurus I Love
Tanya Burr: / pixi2woo
Michelle Phan: / michellephan
Again, if you have any questions about the products I used or anything I did technique-wise, or if you just have makeup questions in general, feel free to ask! Remember that I'm not an expert by any means at all, this is just stuff I've put together from experimenting and watching other UA-camrs (specifically Tanya, a lot of my makeup technique is based on hers~).

Makeup is gender neutral!
Rozz M. Thank you I'm actually non binary so when I see people who post stuff like this saying makeup doesn't have a gender it really makes my day
The only time I wear makeup is for cosplays. I get told I should wear makeup more to tell the truth i'd reather use makeup for special events like comic-cons, thanks for making this
Sirene is speaking the truth! Makeup is so important. I tend to use more powder products then liquid, except for eyeliner and mascara. I have some terrific concealer, since I have bad under eyes circles and acne.
What brand is it?
+BrittanyTheHusky1204 I forgot what it is. But its powder and the label says "European Beauty Original Full Coverage Concealer." My mom bought it off of eBay for me so give it a look!
I feel you 💁 acne and undereyes are not your best friend when it comes to cosplaying. :/
Honestly you're gorgeous without makeup too
+Dani T EXACTLY
+Dani T and with makeup! Do what you want!
"Alright lenses are in I am 20% more kawaii" xD
I think you make a really good point about camera's. You will look lovely without make up in person but camera's (well good ones anyway) will pick up redness or acne. Even if you look stunning (which you do) if you want to cosplay, wear makeup.
oh my gosh sirene! you look absolutely beautiful with or without makeup! i actually prefer you without it!
Pssht. I wish I was that pretty without make-up, you still look really great. Nice tutorial though, it helps a lot!
I am soo happy I came across this! I do not understand make-up AT ALL but I have to wear it AT LEAST twice a year for dance. (Once for photo day and once for recital) And this tutorial is perfect for what I need for dance! Thank you sooooo much for making this video. I really want to go through the computer and hug you right now. ^^
Cosplay? This is my day to day make-up for the office...
Your like : Acne I know i have a few spots. And Im like: Haha im a teenager thats my whole face! im forever alone..... lol jk
Arianna Deskin lol sameee I have a PROBLEM with acne on my forehead. That is why make up is my best friend lol
I'm the same way..
Or the mascara, there is a mascara for making your eyelashes HUGE! It is called Miss Manga. I forgot who makes it, but if you have little or no bottom lashes, it defines it nicely. It is available almost everywhere makeup is sold, but is a bit pricey. By me, it is like, eight dollars, but it is perfect for cosplaying as girls who have very full eyelashes.
Are u sure ur not wearing makeup, bæ u look perfect
I'm glad you posted this, I have seen SO MANY cosplays ruined by no make up. Just like you say even the simplest natural eye/face can be a game changer.
YOU ARE SO PRETTY WITHOUT MAKEUP DONT U DARE SAY BAD THINGS ABOUT YOURSELF!!! >___< AND THIS WAS EXTREMELY HELPFUL :33
Awesome video, I love watching other cosplayers makeup routines! I love Tanya burrs tutorials as well! :3
For cute cosplays it really helps to add some white shimmering eyeshadow to the inner corners of your eye!
Lovely tutorial! I've never really focused on makeup when cosplaying (I don't cosplay often) and so for Sakura Con this year I decided I wanted give it a go. I'm normally not a fan of makeup and suck at putting it on but LOVE the results of following this video. The BB cream works really well with my skin and everything looks natural and elegant while remaining subtle. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
I so adore you! Your commentaries make me laugh while you're doing your makeup! I learned a lot from this video especially your assurance about using not-so expensive makeup products. I agree with your introduction about people not applying makeup when cosplaying - most especially the guys because they'll think it'll make them gay - because I've had friends and acquaintances who are striving to cosplay but refuses to wear makeup even if it's a must. They just don't understand how vital the role of makeup plays during photoshoots. I'd love to share this to them as well to convince them to wear makeup during cosplaying. Thank you so much for doing this tutorial! ^_________________^
I learned alot in this vid specially about the eyes part since one of the focus in cosplaying are the eys xdd thanks so muchhh!!
I'm sooooo in love with holika holika!!!!! Best makeup ever and cutest things they come in!!
Your cosplay 101 had been very helpful. I hope you do more soon.
Thank you so much for this video. I know nothing about makeup & you really helped out- not just for cosplay but in general too. this is my first video from you & i already cant wait to see more! ^.^
Thank you so much for this! I always have far too much of a hard time with make-up and with limited funds, I'm so glad to see that you did a simple one that I'll now try out!
Thank you so much for this video! I never learned how to apply makeup, and it's always stressful trying to figure out for cosplay. I feel confident that I can look good in photos now. Thank you so much! :D
Thank you so much for your Cosplay 101 series!! It's so helpful! :)
baeeee you look so gorgeous without makeup too!!! I've been watching your vids and they are soooo helpful Thanks for donating your time to beginners like me..
you look so beautiful and natural ^.^ with out make up
Used this video when I started cosplaying nearly 10 years ago. Really helped me as someone who never had used makeup before and then only wore makeup for conventions afterwards.
You look stunning without make-up! (and with) You are such a beauty!
This was incredibly helpful! I feel actually quite lucky to have found your video because I have a round face, similar skin tone and an oily face! (Yay for mini jackpots of life!)
I had seen you in dA because I was researching M'gann cosplays since I want to do her Invasion version one of these days. It's also a delight to see that you've cosplayed Ty Lee, yet another character in my "to cosplay" list. You've positively gained a fan. Thank you for your help!
"I am now 20% more kawaii"
xDD I should use that line sometime in life.. xP
I don't know if you've seen it but they have a miss manga mascara. It curls your lashes pretty well and I've found that it looks pretty kawaii
Thanks for doing a video on makeup! It's really helpful to me because I know nothing about it.
Thank you, this was very helpful. They only thing I didn't agree with was putting on the fake eyelashes first since I ended up getting a whole bunch of foundation on the fake lashes and it was a pain to recover them in mascara/black tone. But everything else, perfect!
You're really pretty with and with out make-up!
Thanks for the makeup tips! Your face and skin tone is pretty close to mine so this really helps, I'm going to my first convention this year so thanks again for posting! :3
First off this video was VERY helpful for me as I have no makeup knowledge whatsoever. But the thing is I'm going to be cosplaying Harley Quinn and I'm trying to find the best way to do my makeup. I dressed as her for Halloween and for the white I used normal white face halloween cream makeup which was okay but rubbed off so easily and made a huge mess. What would you recommend to do instead.
Jessica Heep Carter I don't know if this reply is too late for you, but I recommend higher quality costume makeup. I use Ben Nye, but some people use Snazaroo. I would look into Homestuck makeup tutorials; I cosplay Homestuck and there are some great Homestuck tutorials that just give great pointers about using face paint. The Halloween face paint is complete crap, unfortunately :(
Many cosplayers I know used Revlon colorstay foundation. It's an affordable drugstore product, and yet very very beautiful outcomes it gives (which is suitable for oily and combination skin types). As a student and cosplayer myself, I LOVE this product because it really works, good coverage and also affordable. (Students.. are poor most of the time because you still need to afford the wigs, make up items, contact lens, costume or garments and etc.)
The BB cream you use is the same one I use, truthfully. I would recommend it just as much, especially because during hot/summer Cons MANY people forget that sunscreen is really a thing you should wear- even under makeup. Luckily, the Super Plus BB in Pink has not only whitening, but SPF in it. Also, PLEASE beware the contacts! Many are in fact illegal when not sold through an optometrist, so cheapness
I couldn't stop looking at her nails, they were so pretty. I love that nail shape. Ahh.
Acne will be my main struggle with cosplaying. My character isn't anime, he's from the web-comic Homestuck. And yeah
RhiRhi Paranoia DID I SEE HOMESTUCK (I did Jade as my first cosplay a year ago.) Cosplaying Homestuck can get a bit hard at times, but it’s still a lot of fun!
Yeah, I completely understand! It's just something out there for other viewers to take note of. Cosplayers who have little to no experience with make up may have a misunderstanding with the product and might purchase it immediately, when it isn't suited for them, like how you mentioned earlier. But overall, it's a good 101! ^^
OH MY GOD YOU LOOK SO PRETTY WITHOUT MAKEUP DYING
You're pretty with and without makeup! By the way, thanks for all of the info! I have no clue when it comes to makeup.
I really enjoyed this tutorial. I have a lot of trouble with cosplay makeup with anime characters having such perfect skin and my skin being so.. not perfect. Makes me glad to know that it is possible to do nice makeup without using expensive brands as well since I can't really afford or even find the types they use on most makeup tutorials.
Thank you very much for making this video. (wow long comment)
you are extremely beautiful! you remind me so much of Liv Tyler.
this was a really helpful tutorial! i don't normally wear much makeup so i had no idea how to go about basic makeup for cosplay.
thanks so much!
This was such a helpful video. Especially because I don't know a heck of a lot about makeup. Just wanted to to let you know I referenced and credited you and your tutorial in my blog about original costume design. Thanks for making the video. Also, *fangirly moment* you're one of my favourite cosplayers ^^
I love this look! I'm using it for both cosplay and regular makeup XD
Thanks for this! I hardly wear make up, so I didn't wear any last year with my cosplay and the photos looked bad. I wasn't planning on wearing any this year because it doesn't fit my character, but now I'm sure I'm going to do some natural generic make up anyway :)
Just saying..I use Nyx BB cream and I completely agree, it doesn't feel heavy on your face and it doesn't look bad either, I love it :P
But yeah, BB cream is definitely worth a try
I think you look beautiful without makeup!
Hi! This was way helpful, and I really enjoy all your videos, but my question has nothing to do with makeup, so sorry, haha.
Do you buy your costumes, or make them? I was curious, because I want to make my first cosplay, but I don't know if I can make quality or not...anyway, so yah, just curious.
I know I'm not Mango Sirene, and I can only presume that her costumes are handmade, but I do know that you truly can make a good quality cosplay from scratch. Keep in mind, though, it takes a bit of practice, so if it doesn't look magnificent at first it's nothing to fret about. I used to fret all the time, because I would compare my own costume to my friends' costumes. Since I'm still a novice, and they have been making costumes for at least ten years, I would become discouraged because their outfits looked as good, albeit better than store bought. This, in turn, made the quality of my handiwork worsen. Once I started depending on my own opinion, and was more confident in my work, the quality in it began to increase steadfast, both in my own eyes and in others'.
In short, what I'm trying to say is that quality takes practice, but confidence in your work will make it shine brighter than anything else :)
Hey Sirene! I was wondering if you mind answering a question? Im doing a Harley Quinn cosplay and have mud brown eyes, i dont really prefer circle lenses just normal diameter and want a in your face pale blue to go over color. are there specific sites that carry cosmetic lenses for cosplaying purposes and do you have any companies you particularly favor. Thank you for reading this :3
she mentions www.pinkyparadise.com/ in another video :)
Aww, Thank you! the link was greatly appreciated! mwah!
Pai262 Aww, Thank you! the link was greatly appreciated! mwah!
omg. You're gorgeous! Shut up. :3
I've never ever used makeup before(except for twice I can remember-my mom had to do it for me for a wedding and she practiced on me earlier), so this will definitely come in handy when I begin cosplay. :) Thankies~!
sweetie your skin is still darker than mine! i'm what used to termed "milk maid" or "Cream" colored. I don't tan. i freckle, and when it comes to makeup for cosplay and sun? well, i never take a good picture. i'll try your tips, most of it is my usual daily routine when i go out. :)
you have a great natural look!~ and this was pretty helpful!~
I don't know if you do this already, but for the BB cream to prevent it from greasing up your face you can use a translucent or loose powder.
i have the same elf highlighter/concealer and i use the highlighter as eye primer too. it works great
For makeup Elf and Wet n wild are two fantastic and inexpensive makeup lines for everyday beauty and the cosplay budget. Wet n wild has amazing pigmentation when it comes to eyeshadow. Elf and Wet n wild's products hardly go over $10 so super affordable so go check them out! ^^
This video is actually helpful i barely know anything about makeup and for my next con i might use some i just need to get some fondation i actually have dark skin (i'm black) thank u for this video
And you still look good without makeup!!
try mayballien's (doubt i spelled that right) BB cream. You can get it at target or walmart really cheap and i have the same problem. BB creams are just tinted mousturizer and really good for allergies and sensative skin. also maybaline and clineque (still can't spell) are the only things i can use cuz im sesative to EVERYTHING!!!!
You still look sooooo pretty without makeupomg!
Honestly I think you look beautiful even without the make-up and I think it's great you are doing this very informative vlog series to help people who want to get into cos-playing.
Thank you! Haha I'm going as lady two face for an upcoming con, I was originally not going to put any make-up on the "good" side of Harvey but I'm going to now. :)
Or cosplay a character who wears a mask. :)
Lol, I cosplay Kakashi XD
I cosplayed Darth Revan a week ago. It's a very forgiving cosplay since it covers everything
Thanks Mango!
I'm a guy and went on my first cosplay with only baby powder but for my next one I plan to take it up a notch. Thanks a lot for the tutorial! :)
Giiirrrrll! You look beautiful without makeup! :) You are SOOOO talented in so many ways! -3
Thanks for posting this tutorial and thanks for mentioning the primer as well.
You are a cosplay savior! I always do makeup for my cosplay, but it never turned out looking good and this video helped A LOT. Great job :)
P.S. - You look gorgeous (with and without makeup)
you are soo sooo pretty! With AND without makeup! I admire you so much. I have a convention this Saturday and I'm trying to get a routine down. Do you think it could work without contacts? I have some but they've expired and I heard wearing old lenses could mess with vision. Thank you for all your help!!
Love the natural look! I was wondering, what shade of Airspun do you use? I definitely want to give it a try :)
UGH YOU'RE SO PRETTY
I am sooooo glad that mom recently got obsessed with Michelle Phan, now I don't have to go out to buy all these and mom's more than willing to practice her make-up on me!
I like CG True Match, it goes on really well (Cool line, I'm super pale). I don't like their Clean line because of that... smell. Bleaugh. I'm trying Revlon whipped colorstay 24hour- not sure if I like it yet or not, never used whipped. The smell is a little interesting, not sure if I like that part or not. And I never heard of rule of three before! That really helped me with defining!
I dont know if I would personally recommend using BB cream in a cosplay regimen or not. It probably wouldn't be best to use because they tend to have the hintest grey cast or tint to the product. They also contain SPF so your face would appear more pale than the rest of your body in flash photography. You would probably have to be fairly medium to light toned to use BB cream though since most of them were created to cover for use on Asian complexion (medium to light toned)
I plan on cosplaying Lady Ciel Phantomhive from Black Butler. I have darker skin then him/her kinda caramel-ish and him/her has very pale skin. So I was wondering if there are any foundations that will make my skin lighter and where can I get them.(^ω^)
I don't know if this counts (bcause it's an BB cream) and i don't know if this will work for your skin but you could try the *aqua jelly BB cream by Hollika Hollika or you could basicaly mix any foundation with a white one ^o^ I'm so sorry for my Bad englisch i know it suck >.< but yeahr :3
Lara-Sophie Arch Thank you for replying. I'll look into your suggestion.
You don't have to change your skin color to cosplay a certain anime character. Cosplaying is all about fun! Have fun with your skin tone and understand that no one should have the right to judge you in your true skin tone :) good luck though!
JibberJoness Yeah you're right. Thank you for reminding me.
E y є l a s h D є м σ и you don't have to make you skin color match the character you can be any skin tone/color you don't have to be the same exact skin tone as the character.
Sorry if I sound mean I get that you want to do that either just because you want to or because you think you will get criticised on not have the same skin tone for the cosplay but I don't like when cosplayers think they have to have the exact skin tone as the character
When you used the liquid eyeliner on your top lid did you do the whole thing? Like corner to corner or like you did on the bottom lid? And what was the name of the powder you used at the end?
This is really helpful though. I mean I cosplay but make-up to me is like another language or something. I actually didn't know any of the techniques you mentioned for blush and such, plus I'm totally going out to find some BB cream. Thank so much for posting and sharing!
I'm pretty fond of the Cover girl foundation, my cousins girlfriend got me some for Christmas a few years ago, and I love it. But hey, different people.
Thx this really helped I just started cosplaying recently and tht helped with the makeup cuz I fails at makeup and I force my older sis to help me out with its ^^
Love your video! I'm a beginner in make-up so this really helped me alot! thank you!:D
I noticed you used 3 brushes, is there any particular reason you used 3 different brushes?
I know there are like hundreds kind of brushes and i have no idea what brush to use what for.
Thank you in advance!
Nina I want u to know that I based my whole makeup look in high school and I still look back and love the fact that I always looked so cute. I miss videos like this
You look good without makeup too, but if it makes you happy, its a reason to wear it! Btw, great cosplay makeup tutorial! ^^
OMG YOU ARE LIKE ME IN EVERY WAY, we use all the same makeup and we both have oily skin!!
dafaq you're really beautiful without makeup as well! don't put yourself down like that
now to show this to my make up guru so they can help me use this tutorial to make my own make up routine
so simple and easy to understand with no stupidly expensive makeup, thanks for making this vid~ (even i can understand despite wearing makeup only twice in my life heh)
You can use concealer/foundation to cover your natural lip color, and if your lips are dry you can just use a clear lip balm before applying the concealer/foundation
Could you possibly do a crossplay (female to male) make-up tutorial, ive watched a couple on youtube, but they don't explain much with products nd how to apply it, I'm new to make-up so yeah. . . . It would be super helpful! :)
I also recommend looking at Promise Phan's UA-cam transformations. They're amazing and can still be created with simple, inexpensive products. Yes, she also does male transformations. :)
You look really pretty without makeup, too! :3
thank you for this tutorial though, it's really great!
I know someone else said this already, but I'm also wondering if you have pointers for making a female face more masculine for crossplay :0
keep up the good work!
I tried the skin79 brand because I had read it was really good. And I am never going back to normal foundation. My skin is combination, so I have some really oily patches on my face. I personally love it and recommend it, I'm not saying it will absolutely work for you, but it's definitely worth a try!
You can find so much of the product if you search Skin79 BB cream in eBay.
I freaking love you
Hey, I'm cosplaying a guy (John Egbert) and I was wondering what would be the best way to go makeup wise, for him. As an extremely inexpierenced cosplayer I don't really trust myself to just do whatever, so do you have any suggestions on what to do for that?
Im a noob at cosplaying since i havent even bough one yet because before i do i wanna know some stuff about it lol XD and your video is really helpful!
i'm sure someone else has commented but, from what you're describing, the lip gloss is probably Victoria Secret Beauty Rush. It tastes so good. C: a great tutorial.
Hey there! I'm new to Cosplaying... or even if so, I've only watched the show Heros of Cosplay. Growing up, I wasn't exposed to that kinda stuff but I've always found an interest in the make-believe world. I want to go to school for hair and makeup to further my career but I feel like I'm at a road block. With this message, I'm hoping I can find the creative side of myself because it seems to be hidden away somewhere which is almost depressing cause I really have nothing that I am good at.
@MangoSirene I'm a huge anime fan, but i just recently started taking an interest in cosplaying. Your video has helped me so much, but I use gel eyeliner because my eyes have a bad reaction to the liquid eyeliner. So I was wondering if you have any tips for the gel eyeliner because I am so terrible with the top parts of my eyes when it comes to eyeliner. If you have any suggestions please let me know. Thank you.
