@@JK-gw1yf In total the united states has lost 4 submarines since WW2, none after 1963's Thresher. In total the USSR lost 16 submarines, and Russia lost 2 after the end of the cold war. In the time between the sinking of the thresher in 1963 and the fall of the soviet union, the soviets lost 9 submarines.

You’ll need something a little better than a Toyota will a 20 mm cannon strapped to the bed…but probably not that much more.

This is equipment donations, not money, and a lot of it is hand me down equipment, surplus, mothballed, or soon to be exiting service. The number is far lower for actual equipment the US needs to replace. And it makes sense for the west to spend that money, because compared to Nato budgets, it is an absolute bargain. The total amount of recovered territory by ukraine is about 50% of what russia took, and granted gains have been slow recently, only a few dozen to a hundred square kilometers per week, but they are happening, steadily. However, that isnt all that matters. Ukraine was bleeding russia badly while russia was on their offensive, that is expected. But now ukraine is pushing and in a historical first of warfare, ukraines losses on the offensive are about 1/4 of what russias are (on the defensive)… It is a war of attrition, and Russia is being outspent 5x over and being efficiently out fought on the battlefield, while at home in russia the economy is in freefall and it lost as many able bodied men to expatriation as it managed to recruit. It is a slow grind, until it suddenly isnt, and then the russian federation will splinter into many pieces, many of which will be fighting each other.

If russians in Crimea are starved of the good stuff- anything that cannot be carried by infantry- rockets, arty shells, AFV's- then a slow, grinding attack is a very feasible thing. Also, no Sub, much less 60+ of them are making past straights in Turkey on a regular basis.

Minor nit, but actually the naval facilities were not captured because they were at the time of the invastion in 2014 being rented by the Black sea fleet. However their lease was to run out in 2017, according to the Soviiet Union Partition Treaty and the Kharkiv Pact.
Very interesting. Another way to attack the vessels in dry dock is simply to attack the casion (a.k.a. dry dock door) with USVs. Ships in a maintnenance availability typically drop all watertight compartmentation used at sea. Also, odds are high that work will involve at least one hull cut or hull valve removal. So, breaching the casion will likely result in sinking the ships in a flooded dry dock. This will make them not useful for many months. This is not as foolproof as hitting them with missiles but much cheaper if the USVs can penetrate port security.
These dry docks are not directly connected to the open sea. They are within the harbor and USV's would need to pass certain (probably guarded) choke points and obstructions which would make it very hard. Just check the location of these docks in Sevastopol and you'l see the barriers & choke points
You make a good point. In my country, dry docks are assumed industrial infrastructure and are afforded an order of magnitude less protection than active military ships in a Naval base. This may not be the same arrangement in Crimea. @@g412bb
I don't think it is controversial to say that the Russian Navy is the most professional of the Russian armed services. The Russian navy is losing a naval war to a country that does not have a navy. I think we lost something in translation. When Russian military was ranked 2nd in the world, it seems they meant not worst, but one better than worst. 2nd from the bottom.

I’m genuinely disappointed, I thought you were going to go into the Missile tactics and the damage on the photos to the sub. I’ve seen on other channels they used a wave of s200s to activate Russian air defences,behind which were harm missiles to kill said air defence, when they lost a few air defences they turned off the rests radars and coming up the rear were storm shadow missiles that then get a free hit on the sub. Also the usvs were attacking the ships at the same time to occupy their crews, so they didnt get to shoot anything down. The Russians got taught a lesson. Brilliant tactics. I have questions.. Was this a nuclear powered sub? Can they just crane it out or will it need breaking up. Would people be on the sub in dry dock at night.
Kilos are diesel-electric. They’re very good d-e subs, btw. They don’t have the endurance that AIP d-e’s possess but they have a lot of hard-hitting weapons.

your audio is so quiet i can barely hear it on headphones on the loudest setting possible. Whatever program you use to make vidoes, look for something like 'normalise audio' or use some plugins to get the audio closer to 0db without clipping, limiters, compressors etc.

I’ve seen a slightly higher resolution vesion of that BDA shot and it appears that the hit on the Rostov-On-Don actually hit the dock bottom just under the bow. The shock/flying masonry then appears to have torn apart the relatively flimsy bow dome. Whilst that’s going to put the boat out for a while, I wouldn’t say based on that alone that the submarine is a total loss, more that it’s likely that they will have to do a USS Connecticut style job on it.
@@hphp31416 Absolutely. At best, it’s out for the next year or two and therefore the rest of the war. And I suspect it will be hit again eventually. But for now I wouldn’t be bold enough to call it a total loss as I’m not sure from the imagery it’s recieved a direct hit.
Which Russia doesn’t really have the capacity to do in Crimea. If they leave the Rostov in the dry dock they’re down a dry dock for the duration of the conflict. Problem is they don’t really have a way to move it in one piece, either. Submarines with big holes in them are notoriously difficult to float. They’ll probably end up having to break it up in place & salvage what they can for their other Kilos.
Thank you - love you work Mr. @HI Sutton. Ive wondered for a while if Storm Shadow will eventually be used to take out the Kerch bridge from the Black Sea. It seems the most logical way to take out the bridge. When the first "truck attack" on the bridge the video evidence and the post attack photos (two spans dropped at opposite ends) didn't support that and I wondered if it was air to unmanned surface vessels, and I feel like an air attack or attacks will have to be undertaken to drop the bridge. Removing SAM platforms such as surface combatants and shore based systems presumably makes that much easier as well as having the other obvious benefits, freedom of movement, deny Russian commerce/logisitics ships access, reduce missile attacks on Ukraine. The Naval battle will obviously be key in taking back Crimea, but I think it is increasingly clear that it how important it is for the land battle in the east and north of Ukraine.

Ukraine can't really commit a foul in defending or regaining their territory as long as they stay within the laws and conventions of warfare. If the UK invades Russia then Russia would be entitled to attack London Bridge if London Bridge was being used for military purposes. So no in the same circumstances if Russia attacked London Bridge that would be reasonable. Of course the chances of Russia being able to carry out a sucessful atack against London Bridge are low. They couldn't even invade a neighbour with essentially 40 year old military technology. But it would be humourous to see them try.

Since 2014, continuing today, the ukrainazis have been launching daily rocket attacks on their civilian Russian population. Thousands of children killed in schools and playgrounds with no instigation from Russia. They're just evil. The memorials for which have been scrubbed from Wikipedia. That's called propaganda. This happened AFTER THE US INVADED ukrainazia in 2014, executed the government and put in place their own puppet regime. The regions who democratically voted for independence were ignored and the attacks on civilians began. Russia sent peacekeepers but were told not to interfere. For 9 years they had to sit back and watch civilians being executed by the US, UK and NATO for simply wanting independence from Europe. The last straw was in September 2021 when NATO confirmed they would post nuclear weapons in ukrainazia. The most corrupt country in the world who had been attacking Russian civilians for 8 years, fully signed-of and approved by NATO. The Minsk agreement was signed by Germany to make ukrainazis stop the attacks. The Germans ignored the agreement for 9 years after 2 arbitrations. Europe doesn't care about its people. They flood their country with terrorists and illegal migrants, giving them everything they want while their own population starve. Or freeze because the UK and US blew up Nord Stream 2 to kill off their own people. Russia cares about Russians and freedom. They haven't even taken their gloves off yet. @@1337flite I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the United States has never fought with countries that had S 300 air defense systems. Even Iraq in 2003 did not have these air defense systems. The S-300 is capable of easily shooting down fourth-generation aircraft. There is no information about the fifth generation. So, Ukraine has the largest number of C 300 units after Russia. This automatically means that it is impossible to use aviation as the United States did in Iraq.

For a country with virtually no navy, Ukraine has certainly done a very good job of hitting the Russian Navy. A storm shadow missile has a 450 kg broach warhead, which could cause significant damage to any submarine. I would be very surprised if the Rostove in Don ever becomes operational.
it helps to have nato and the us nave do all the heavy lifting and all u have to do us push teh button on a missile battery to make it look like you fired something, ....you realize the stopry about moskva cant be true either it takes 7 or 8 missiles to overwhelm their close in weapons.... it was lost due to bad dc not anything ukraine did...
All Ukraine did is lying dead on the ground for journalist to take photos so Biden can still sell this war. All the intel, equipment, soldiers, planning are all NATO. My country have people volunteered to fight in Ukraine and reported it’s all mercs doing the actual heavy fighting because Ukrainian soldiers aren’t trained enough to use their own equipment let alone donated one with instructions all in English
The dry dock itself didn’t receive much damage, however, a good portion of the repair equipment around it was damaged or completely destroyed. Most of that stuff was made in the West, so Russia will have a very hard time replacing them.

I can see evidence of fire in the vicinity and obvious damage in some places. I don't know that we can say that the sub is heavily damaged from these photos, possibly though. We certainly can't say the sub is lost, especially when it's sitting in a drydock.
Its a submarine, every kind of damage must be taken serious if russia dont want another kursk. Even if its not destroyed it will be taken out for months and most likly will get hit by another strike.
Once it's built, you kind of don't want your pressure vessel to be heat-treated again. I winder if the double hull might offer any protection in this case, though.

Ukraine, at heart, has major naval capacity. The former flagship Moskva was built in Mykolaiv, which is a major shipbuilding center of Ukraine since the time of both the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. The city has three major shipyards one of which is capable of building large navy ships. If Russia can’t fix their ships, maybe they should ask Ukraine for help? It’s ironic that the shipyard that built Moskva might also be building the missiles and drones that now have the Russians terrified.

The shipyard you speak off wast able to repair barges due to many crane mechanical issues and shortage of trained man power. The irony is that Ukraine hasnt built anything significant since the fall of the USSR. Everything they proud themselves in was built using the resoųrces of many Soviet republics. Man power , materials , brains and so on. Yet Ukrainians , to this day try to take all the credit.

Sutton, because of your (suspiciously) timely KILO class video, I was in a position to explain to my social circles what had happened and gave a broad Idea of what this meant for Ukraine/Russia.
I really appreciate the work you do, in such a space where gathering sources and information is not as trival for obvious reasons.

If russians in Crimea are starved of the good stuff- anything that cannot be carried by infantry- rockets, arty shells, AFV's- then a slow, grinding attack is a very feasible thing.
Also, no Sub, much less 60+ of them are making past straights in Turkey on a regular basis.
@@cactuslietuva Ukraine doesnt need a navy to attack crimea, in fact they have already been attacking crimea. Modern naval warfare doesn't require a significant traditional navy. Now if russia were actively and properly patrolling with their navy fleet. This may be a different story.

Minor nit, but actually the naval facilities were not captured because they were at the time of the invastion in 2014 being rented by the Black sea fleet. However their lease was to run out in 2017, according to the Soviiet Union Partition Treaty and the Kharkiv Pact.

Very interesting. Another way to attack the vessels in dry dock is simply to attack the casion (a.k.a. dry dock door) with USVs. Ships in a maintnenance availability typically drop all watertight compartmentation used at sea. Also, odds are high that work will involve at least one hull cut or hull valve removal. So, breaching the casion will likely result in sinking the ships in a flooded dry dock. This will make them not useful for many months. This is not as foolproof as hitting them with missiles but much cheaper if the USVs can penetrate port security.
These dry docks are not directly connected to the open sea. They are within the harbor and USV's would need to pass certain (probably guarded) choke points and obstructions which would make it very hard.
Just check the location of these docks in Sevastopol and you'l see the barriers & choke points

You make a good point. In my country, dry docks are assumed industrial infrastructure and are afforded an order of magnitude less protection than active military ships in a Naval base. This may not be the same arrangement in Crimea. @@g412bb

I don't think it is controversial to say that the Russian Navy is the most professional of the Russian armed services. The Russian navy is losing a naval war to a country that does not have a navy. I think we lost something in translation. When Russian military was ranked 2nd in the world, it seems they meant not worst, but one better than worst. 2nd from the bottom.

yes, scaling a totally unused rig which's taking has no strategic, tactical or practical value whatsoever must be gutting - even if the photos are indeed recent, which is certainly not proven.

I’m genuinely disappointed, I thought you were going to go into the Missile tactics and the damage on the photos to the sub. I’ve seen on other channels they used a wave of s200s to activate Russian air defences,behind which were harm missiles to kill said air defence, when they lost a few air defences they turned off the rests radars and coming up the rear were storm shadow missiles that then get a free hit on the sub. Also the usvs were attacking the ships at the same time to occupy their crews, so they didnt get to shoot anything down. The Russians got taught a lesson. Brilliant tactics. I have questions..
Was this a nuclear powered sub? Can they just crane it out or will it need breaking up. Would people be on the sub in dry dock at night.
Kilos are diesel-electric. They’re very good d-e subs, btw. They don’t have the endurance that AIP d-e’s possess but they have a lot of hard-hitting weapons.

your audio is so quiet i can barely hear it on headphones on the loudest setting possible. Whatever program you use to make vidoes, look for something like 'normalise audio' or use some plugins to get the audio closer to 0db without clipping, limiters, compressors etc.
considering how submarines are constructed and how they work i would say the submarine is likely a total loss.

I’ve seen a slightly higher resolution vesion of that BDA shot and it appears that the hit on the Rostov-On-Don actually hit the dock bottom just under the bow. The shock/flying masonry then appears to have torn apart the relatively flimsy bow dome. Whilst that’s going to put the boat out for a while, I wouldn’t say based on that alone that the submarine is a total loss, more that it’s likely that they will have to do a USS Connecticut style job on it.
keep in mind reparing submarine within range of enemy fire might be difficult
@@hphp31416 Absolutely. At best, it’s out for the next year or two and therefore the rest of the war. And I suspect it will be hit again eventually. But for now I wouldn’t be bold enough to call it a total loss as I’m not sure from the imagery it’s recieved a direct hit.
Which Russia doesn’t really have the capacity to do in Crimea. If they leave the Rostov in the dry dock they’re down a dry dock for the duration of the conflict. Problem is they don’t really have a way to move it in one piece, either. Submarines with big holes in them are notoriously difficult to float. They’ll probably end up having to break it up in place & salvage what they can for their other Kilos.

Ive wondered for a while if Storm Shadow will eventually be used to take out the Kerch bridge from the Black Sea. It seems the most logical way to take out the bridge.
When the first "truck attack" on the bridge the video evidence and the post attack photos (two spans dropped at opposite ends) didn't support that and I wondered if it was air to unmanned surface vessels, and I feel like an air attack or attacks will have to be undertaken to drop the bridge.
Removing SAM platforms such as surface combatants and shore based systems presumably makes that much easier as well as having the other obvious benefits, freedom of movement, deny Russian commerce/logisitics ships access, reduce missile attacks on Ukraine.
The Naval battle will obviously be key in taking back Crimea, but I think it is increasingly clear that it how important it is for the land battle in the east and north of Ukraine.
@nuttywalls8190 - I cry foul because Russia invaded Ukraine. Ukraine can't really commit a foul in defending or regaining their territory as long as they stay within the laws and conventions of warfare.
If the UK invades Russia then Russia would be entitled to attack London Bridge if London Bridge was being used for military purposes.
So no in the same circumstances if Russia attacked London Bridge that would be reasonable.
Of course the chances of Russia being able to carry out a sucessful atack against London Bridge are low. They couldn't even invade a neighbour with essentially 40 year old military technology.
But it would be humourous to see them try.
@NotMe605 Russia didn't invade ukrainazia, it's a liberation of the US invasion. Since 2014, continuing today, the ukrainazis have been launching daily rocket attacks on their civilian Russian population. Thousands of children killed in schools and playgrounds with no instigation from Russia. They're just evil. The memorials for which have been scrubbed from Wikipedia. That's called propaganda.
This happened AFTER THE US INVADED ukrainazia in 2014, executed the government and put in place their own puppet regime. The regions who democratically voted for independence were ignored and the attacks on civilians began. Russia sent peacekeepers but were told not to interfere. For 9 years they had to sit back and watch civilians being executed by the US, UK and NATO for simply wanting independence from Europe.
The last straw was in September 2021 when NATO confirmed they would post nuclear weapons in ukrainazia. The most corrupt country in the world who had been attacking Russian civilians for 8 years, fully signed-of and approved by NATO. The Minsk agreement was signed by Germany to make ukrainazis stop the attacks. The Germans ignored the agreement for 9 years after 2 arbitrations.
Europe doesn't care about its people. They flood their country with terrorists and illegal migrants, giving them everything they want while their own population starve. Or freeze because the UK and US blew up Nord Stream 2 to kill off their own people. Russia cares about Russians and freedom. They haven't even taken their gloves off yet.

@@1337flite I would like to draw your attention to the fact that the United States has never fought with countries that had S 300 air defense systems. Even Iraq in 2003 did not have these air defense systems. The S-300 is capable of easily shooting down fourth-generation aircraft. There is no information about the fifth generation. So, Ukraine has the largest number of C 300 units after Russia. This automatically means that it is impossible to use aviation as the United States did in Iraq.

For a country with virtually no navy, Ukraine has certainly done a very good job of hitting the Russian Navy. A storm shadow missile has a 450 kg broach warhead, which could cause significant damage to any submarine. I would be very surprised if the Rostove in Don ever becomes operational.
it helps to have nato and the us nave do all the heavy lifting and all u have to do us push teh button on a missile battery to make it look like you fired something, ....you realize the stopry about moskva cant be true either it takes 7 or 8 missiles to overwhelm their close in weapons.... it was lost due to bad dc not anything ukraine did...

My country have people volunteered to fight in Ukraine and reported it’s all mercs doing the actual heavy fighting because Ukrainian soldiers aren’t trained enough to use their own equipment let alone donated one with instructions all in English
The dry dock itself didn’t receive much damage, however, a good portion of the repair equipment around it was damaged or completely destroyed. Most of that stuff was made in the West, so Russia will have a very hard time replacing them.

I can see evidence of fire in the vicinity and obvious damage in some places. I don't know that we can say that the sub is heavily damaged from these photos, possibly though. We certainly can't say the sub is lost, especially when it's sitting in a drydock.
Subs are fragile, any damage is serious damage.
There looks to be a piece of the sub missing.
Its a submarine, every kind of damage must be taken serious if russia dont want another kursk. Even if its not destroyed it will be taken out for months and most likly will get hit by another strike.
Once it's built, you kind of don't want your pressure vessel to be heat-treated again.
I winder if the double hull might offer any protection in this case, though.

Ukraine, at heart, has major naval capacity. The former flagship Moskva was built in Mykolaiv, which is a major shipbuilding center of Ukraine since the time of both the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. The city has three major shipyards one of which is capable of building large navy ships. If Russia can’t fix their ships, maybe they should ask Ukraine for help? It’s ironic that the shipyard that built Moskva might also be building the missiles and drones that now have the Russians terrified.

The shipyard you speak off wast able to repair barges due to many crane mechanical issues and shortage of trained man power. The irony is that Ukraine hasnt built anything significant since the fall of the USSR.
Everything they proud themselves in was built using the resoųrces of many Soviet republics. Man power , materials , brains and so on.
Yet Ukrainians , to this day try to take all the credit.
