58 minutes of pure joy. What a warm and wonderful man Michael Palin is. How is it that this video doesn't have 594 MILLION views? It is because 593 million people are totally missing out on the best things in life.
I found myself getting emotional at the moment Terry J's voice broke when presenting the BAFTA to Michael. As I write this I'm keenly aware that Michael is dealing with the loss of his great friend.
A global treasure. Funny, charming, intelligent, handsome, sweet, modest, honest. A beautiful human being. Michael is 30 years older than me, but I'd like to die before he does, simply because I don't want to live in a world that he does not inhabit.
Top man. Met him at a book signing for "Full Circle" at Book Soup in Los Angeles in 1997. Every bit the gentleman and nice guy I knew he would be. Just read his book on the ship Erebus. A good read and highly recommended. I love all the Pythons, but Michael is my favorite. RIP Graham Chapman and Terry Jones.
It's so embarrassing: after literally 35 years of loving the Pythons, I only just recently realized that Palin was the one who did the biggest variety of characters. I don't know if that's a tribute to his artistry or my idiocy. Probably mostly the latter. :)
While the humor of many comics is rooted in depression and other dark areas of the human psyche, the humor of Michael Palin comes from him having fun at doing what he does and we are all better because of it.
One of the many things I love about the fish slapping dance is during the close two shot. I I suppose technically it's a wide "over the shoulder" of Michael, but you can clearly see that John is trying to keep it together as Mikey dances up and back, flicking his cheeks. Honestly, everything about that sketch is perfect, from the costuming to the music, Michael's gay little dance... it's perfectly silly, which is really the essence of Monty Python.
He's been around the world in 80 days, he's gone from pole to pole, sahara no problem, a trepid explorer, a master of comedy and he's a lumberjack lol. A great life michael palin has lived and more yet to come 👍.
He actually hosted it 3 times, the first 2 in the '70s. Eric also hosted a couple of times in the '70s, the first inc!uding the original short film of THE RUTLES.
in 1973 i was going to college in aptos, california.....did not have a t.v. then as there was only four channels and t.v. was known as the boob tube....saw a python skit at a bar and was blown away....so i bought a 9 inch black and white t.v. that i kept in a closet....only watched it on tuesday nights at 9 when p.b.s. did the python show.....soooo thoroughly enjoyed that 30 minutes every tuesday night....great memory
Michael Palin, everyone's favourite Python. My favourites among his work are Golden Gordon, Jaberwocky, and Around the Word in 80 Days. What a great bloke!
Michael Palin was always my favorite. Ripping yarns was brilliant. A priest I knew said he had not seen Life of Brian because the church said it was blasphemous. He finally decided to see it 20 years later and thought it was hilarious (and not blasphemous).
I knew Michael was my favorite python when I realized he was in all my favorite sketches: argument clinic, cheese shop, Spanish Inquisition and of course, dead parrot.
lovely man.. Superb comic talent and it probably hurt Michael the most of all the Pythons when we lost his long time friend Terry Jones last week.. Thanks for this doco.
‘Around the world in 80 days’ is still my favourite ever travel documentary I watch it at least once a year, throughly enjoying it on each occasion. Michael Palin brought a whole new dimension of being like ‘the man next door’ discovering the wonders of the world.
Roddy Teague Alan Whicker hardly acted like ‘the man next door’. Also, I can find nothing that suggests that he ‘passed opinion’ on Michael Palin, let alone that he “did not rate Palin as a travel man at all”, perhaps you could reference that for me.
Love this man so much! I always thought from the Python days that he was funny and handsome, but what's so great is that he's also a terrific actor. He's done some 'straight' roles in smaller movies that I really loved. A Fish Called Wanda is one of my favorite films. And casting him as one of the villains in Brazil is still one of the most brilliant bits of casting I think ever done, because you can't ever imagine him being villainous as himself, but he absolutely nails it! His travel programs are always a great go-to to watch when I'm feeling sick - Around the World, Pole to Pole, even the one in North Korea. He's so likable and can make anything entertaining.
The greatest of the Pythons, and I love them all. I was lucky enough to work with Graham for a day in the early 80s, and even in the presence of this absolute hero of mine, I couldn't help but talk a bit about Michael Palin...to which Graham smiled and quite agreed. Many millions of people have talked about how the Beatles changed their lives, but for me it was the Pythons more than anything else. Irreverence and kindness are truly sacred qualities.
Michael Palin is brilliant! I was so happy to see him in the Death of Stalin. Such a funny movie and Palin as usual...was spot on and just wonderful! He's a national treasure for my cousins across the pond. Glad you shared him with us Yanks....lol. cheers!
Do love Michael Palin & ẹnoy the documentary. But...did & do have trouble with killing & disemboweling the snake on camera to eat it. Also, later toasting w green snake fluids (gallbladder).
I've loved the Pythons from the first moment I saw them, all equally and especially Michael's travel shows. Live long and prosper, you grotty bastards!
Michael Palin father's reaction to the goon show was similar to my parents reaction to Monty Python. They couldn't get thier head round it. I loved it then and still do today.
Monty Python, Firesign Theatre, George Carlin and many others too numerous to mention have brought many decades of hilarious entertainment.....thank you to the Pythons for the comedic laughter....it has kept me young .......
The Molotov-Hruschov scene of Palin and Buscemi was one of the best parts of the movie, together with the Zhukov entrance and the final meeting/ousting of Berija
Most of my warped humour and art design was thanks to these 5 fella's making me a life long fan which I passed on to my two daughters who, no doubt will pass it on to their children. The Life of Brian being one of the single most important pieces of work explaining religion which they wrote and made. George Harrison of the Beatles mortgaged his house and business to fund this wonderful film with the Peoples Popular Front of Judea.
Brilliant actor/performer, his Mom was also brilliant and a natural at 31:05, to me she represented the best of old England - what England used to be but Michael is a fantastic performer and v. v. funny.
A huge fan of MP in all his endeavours, 'GBH' is my favourite dramatic thing he's done... (A difficult piece and very much of its time, he kicks it out of the stadium...) Talented in so many ways, he's a quite BRILLIANT straight actor... xx SF

Winnie Wallace... Some of the Python stuff is genius, and some of it's shite , Michael admits that himself... But one thing that we all agree about is Mr Palin's wonderful charm and talent. I'll watch him in anything on tv he appears in, he's an absolute legend.
Have a look at a three part TV series he did back in 2014 called 'Remember me'. Fantastic! And I loved seeing Terry Jones (24.50) sat in front of a picture of himself sat at a piano naked, an image that always makes me chuckle.
26:32 - 'Spike sent me a fan letter' - One of my most prized possessions is a beautifully hand written letter from Spike, who very courteously replied to me, after I had sent him a little note saying how much I liked his work.
The sound is screwed up around the 45 min mark just when they are talking about G.b.h. Where Michael brilliantly plays a headmaster fighting against the evil politician played by Robert Lindsay. This is a great series written by Alan Bleasdale if you ever get the chance to see it do

The most likable man in Britain. A national treasure! Humble, compassionate, gentle and funny. It's all a bit sickening! (to keep up the python spirit)

If every man was as decent and kind as this man, we would be living in a better and safer world
Conversely, if the world was a better and safer place, we'd get more men like Michael Palin.

Yes, choking up in under 2 minutes..
@flint the kaka harris Terry Jones just died.
It was very moving
Pity John Cleese has turned into a "toffee nose" ...

Michael Palin truly is the compassionate beating heart of the Pythons.
One of five, yes.
Self serving beating heart of one of the pythons.

I'm an American. Michael Palin is a World treasure in my eyes.
At 44:15 the soundtrack goes back to the beginning for about 2 minutes and then goes back in sync. Has nobody else noticed this??
I noticed. I wonder what we missed.
I am lucky enough to have met many 'celebrities' over the years. Michael is a true giant and a true gent.
A global treasure. Funny, charming, intelligent, handsome, sweet, modest, honest. A beautiful human being.

Everything I know about Flower arranging came from Michael Palin
I met him in 1980 in Cardiff. He was genuinely pleased that I liked his performance in Three Men In A Boat on British TV. Very natural, very genuine.
"TMiaB" was hilarious!
Nice to see Connie Booth being interviewed as well.
Still looking great
Of all the Pythons, he was the most versatile, when it came to portraying varied characters.
Along with gray
@@nhdarling2 Along with whom?

I can truly say that everything I've ever seen him do on screen I have enjoyed. He seems like such a normal guy.
Michael Palin is a gem. I've watched all his films and documentaries, and now I'm going throw his TV series.

Michael's "Around the World in 80 Days" is still one of my favorite "real life" shows, ever. So well done and he adds just the right humor to it, too.
