  • Episode 3 of a recurring SUV camping adventures series in which I go off the beaten path to explore and profile less traveled places while SUV camping in my no build Suburban camper. In each episode I share the details of one free remote campsite. This episode features the Alvord Desert and Steens Mountain Wilderness located in remote southeast Oregon.
If you want to learn more about how to go anywhere, camp for free, and be prepared for anything, check out my website www.suburbanca... and here is the page featuring links to all the gear I utilize: www.suburbanca....

You are NOT supposed to camp on the playa. People can drive/ride into you in the dark, it disturbs the view for everyone else AND odfw officers will tell you the lake can move at any time meaning you could wake up to 2" of water and your vehicle would be useless(even in 4x4). The Alvord saw a record number of visitors these last 2 yrs so next time please do better. Thanks

I beg to differ Robert. Camping is allowed when conditions permit. Why would the BLM website show campers parked on the playa if camping is not allowed? www.blm.gov/programs/national-conservation-lands/oregon-washington/alvord-desert-wsa. Although the chances of someone hitting you are very slim, you should probably leave a light on. With regard to the view, what is the difference between a vehicle parked on the playa to enjoy the view and one parked on the playa to camp and enjoy the view? They are both going to "disturb" the view, so, are you saying nobody should drive on the playa? I am glad to hear there were a record number of visitors as it is a special place.
