Israel as an occupier and oppressor of the people of Palestine has absolutely NO right to self defense. In fact it is the people of Palestine who have the right to self defense and resistance against an occupier.
If this guy responding to RBB was walking down the street and got mugged and fought back against his attacker, he would be engaging in self defense. If the Mugger increased his level of aggression would this minister consider the mugger was engaging in his right to self defense? Of course not.
The act of self defense in instantaneous, it is in the moment. Aggression after the fact is retaliation & revenge, pure and simple.
Also the guy responding is such a weasel. Hamas committed acts of terrorism and massacres, Israel, having murdered many, many times more civilians is using a level of force. He cannot even call it for what it is. His response is shameful. Yet another fully paid up member of the Irish chapter of the Israel lobby.

Leo Vardakar has a problem to take a stand. Why Hamas did this because they have been kept in Gaza and Wast Bank like animals. You're caring, thoughtful response didn't answer the question though. Perhaps somewhere between 40,000 and 60,000? Does that seem reasonable and proportionate to you? You mention the"unspeakable" act of October 7 by Hamas. Did history start on October 7? Or was it 9/11/2001, or the Nakba in 1948 or August 1945 in Japan, .....or? I didn't hear you mention the multiple unspeakable acts by Israel against Palestinians since 1948. Was all that 'proportionate' particularly against those nasty kiddies throwing stones. If not has Ireland and your government consistently, without equivocation, absolutely condemned Israel after every atrocity against the Palestinians since 1948? Yes, we all condemn Hamas, condemn Hamas , condemn Hamas. Do you condemn the Israeli Government? Surely you do given Ireland's history and your strong recent stand in favour of Ukraine.
