- When people ask Jessie Reyez what her song “Mutual Friend” is about, she just laughs. “It’s literal,” the Canadian singer-songwriter tells Genius in our latest installment of Verified. “Everything in the song is the story of what happened that day.”
Reyez wrote the song-which already has more than 2.1 million Spotify plays-with producer Rykeyz in roughly 20 minutes at the end of a session. She was inspired by something that happened the day before. As the song came to life, they only recorded two vocal takes, and most of what you hear on the finished song comes from the original.
