something i never quite registered about freezai is just how intelligent he is, like i've been a fan of his for ages now and tune into his streams whenever i see them (yours too jim dw) but i never realised just how smart he is. obviously i've seen his ridiculous ability to analyse a gamestate, predict his opponents, and understand a metagame, and it's clear he puts a lot of thought into his channel, but even when he's just chilling on a podcast his brain seems to go at superhuman speeds. the way he constantly counters with his own questions also made me laugh, it's just totally natural for him to constantly seek out information so even when he's a podcast guest he can't help it.
also just to briefly give my two cents on smogon tournament coverage, this isn't meant to criticise any specific people, nor is it a criticism of the smogon team who do a huge amount of work to keep the servers up, regulate the tiers and host tournaments, but from my perspective it's ridiculous to claim that people aren't interested in tournaments. everyone who's watching these channels or playing on showdown obviously finds singles interesting, the reason why those people aren't playing or watching tournaments is entirely due to a lack of advertising, poor implementation and the state of the community. the smogon forums are a mess where most casual players don't feel comfortable wading through the controversy and ranting to find tournaments to play/watch, the smogon team do nothing to promote their tournaments outside of occasional messages on showdown which is no way near enough, and as for the community the players are in their own little bubble where they all hang out, constantly play best of 1 games in huge team tournaments where almost nothing is relevant, then don't upload any of it. we need to have more logical and competitive tournaments (best of 3 solo rather than best of 1 teams mainly), we need to have tournaments integrated better into the showdown site so we don't have to mess with the forums to get involved, and i'm honestly shocked that there isn't already an official showdown youtube channel there's thousands of players and creators who could work on it, and they could advertise tournaments to new players as well as covering tournaments with commentary like jim's doing with his revival channel

Jim, you are 100% correct about the attention span loss
I've avoided Vine (yeah I'm older than you guys lol) and TikTok and the like for those reasons
But UA-cam is home to a lot of my favorite things so its easy to indulge the curiousity of clicking a short video while surfing things to watch
Then you watch Shorts for 3 hours and somehow feel more useless than had you watched just as pointless longer videos instead
Really should get away from youtube too but then what do I do? Be alone with my thoughts? Thats torture

This was such an interesting episode! Love Freezai's thought process on doing YT full time. It resonated with me a lot - I have a pretty good degree in my country and while I loved the industry I worked in, a remote opportunity came up that allowed me to work with much more free time (and much higher pay) albeit isn't directly related with my field. His questions were also questions I pondered - is this something I can really do full time or in the future? Will I get bored of this?
    Again, great episode!

I forgot to comment the other day and I don't have much to add that others haven't said. I do think it's interesting that Freezai seems interested in Wolfey-like numbers while also not wanting to make UA-cam a full priority, but I think that it's respectable albeit difficult (and he doesn't seem too attached to becoming a Wolfey-sized channel). I really appreciated how candid he was with his answers to a lot of these, confidently sharing some more controversial opinions like hating building and that he doesn't really care about bans etc. and just wants to play the game (neither is like, super hot take, but definitely stuff that others seem to tiptoe around more).
His comments about "how do we make things bigger?" with respect to viewership about tournaments are very valid, and I think it definitely requires some luck and a lot of help from Smogon itself. It's not available anymore, but there was an old video by blunder that apparently was very critical of Smogon's promotion of its own tournaments, and many content creators, tournament players, and viewers seemed to agree with him. At some point Smogon needs to want its own events to grow, but obviously that's hard when there is so much required from these volunteers for pittances in return.
IDK if it was your intention, but it definitely did FEEL like you were a little on the defensive about Showdown 6v6 when Freezai was espousing the joys of VGC. Which isn't a bad thing, you're well within your wheelhouse to share your own opinions on stuff (even though in this case it seemed like you were trying to come across more neutrally). It did surprise me a bit though since usually you ride their wave. I can get the same way about other stuff so it was a relatable moment lol.
One last thing I'll say is that on a personal level, I do think that videos about stuff like bans "age well" because they are neat snapshots of that moment in time. I like to learn what went into tiering decisions more in-depth even many years after the fact, personally. Though I do agree they don't seem super conducive to growing a channel.

Another thing about in person tournaments is COVID. I used to play TCG and got COVID travelling to a regional, and thats when they were masks required. (The airports and planes were not, which is where i got it). Since they dropped the mask mandate, i am completely uninterested in going to 1000+ person tournaments where no one is taking any precautions.

On the topic of making smogon tournaments interesting to viewers, the most important part is to make people care about the players, which is difficult. No matter great a metagame is, most people are not that interested in watching a competitive game between 2 faceless players. Because of the way competitive pokemon developed, the most craziest storylines, the most interesting characters, and the most absurd displays of skill are buried in the smogon forums and only appreciated by a small niche community. Because of this, its its hard for the typical viewer to become invested in tournament games without a lot of groundwork regarding both the mechanics/metagame side, as well as the narrative/character side.
Using the ADV revival tournaments as an example, I think you guys have done a good job with the former, but the latter can use some more work. Perhaps it might be a good idea to shift the focus a bit away from what happened in a game (eg: unusual pokemon or incredible hax) and more towards the players themselves.

I've played randos casually for a few years but I'll probably never be embedded in the Smogon tournament scene
Hopping into Gen 3 OU and randos from watching the ADV Revival stuff? Easy peasy, will do
Trying to enter and parse a 25 year old forum and use that to schedule games with people I've never met? No thanks
I'm not good enough at the game to feel that its worth my time and I can hardly get real life friends to do stuff so I'd rather devote my energy to that instead
I have to think that is a common situation for most people
Its fun to hop in randos or low ladder for an hour after work or whatever while watching your guys videos

About open team sheets do you want to promote scouting/peeking over to see the answer of the test. Or do you want the game to mainly be about outplaying your opponent in match/turn to turn gameplay. I assume freezing pefers the 2nd option and it's okay to like the first one it's just unpopular and I think other games do it better ie card games.

    • @aldrichunfaithful3589
      @aldrichunfaithful3589 7 місяців тому +2

im a bit late but that's always been my perspective. sleep (with sleep clause) is perfectly fine, the issue has always been that gamefreak thinks accuracy is a balancing mechanic, so they make a super innacurate sleep move then give it to a bunch of op threats and expect it to be fine, but obviously when those mons start running it the whole tier becomes a mess. gravity is nonexistent in singles so a hypnosis ban would fix the entire issue without any collateral
