  • Turn a normal AC Window unit down below the 65 degree fahrenheit minimum the controller allows! Here is how I hacked my 8000 btu air conditioner to get my Glycol mix below freezing.

Discharge capacitors with volt meter. Capacitors can discharge a higher voltage then line. Usually 360vac to 440vac. So be careful.

Awesome job. I was looking for a way to do this an no one else showed the wiring, only the mod to the unit itself, but never the wiring. Thanks.

    Help!
How did you pull off the aluminum fins from the cooling coil?
I ruined one air conditioner trying!

A big part is missing. Where is the wiring for that amazon device(thermostat) which cycles your comperessor?

Great walk through! I was concerned about getting a newer model AC unit for a frankenchiller project, but it makes sense that you’d be able to bypass all the control circuitry. Great!
Would you say that a portable unit with one of those exhaust air pipes would be a good choice for this? Having the condenser coil on the bottom rather than side by side seems like it would make immersing it easier, without risking the delicate copper pipes twisting over a unit where the condenser and evaporator are side by side.
Do you have a video on the physical build itself? 🤓🤓

I building one myself. Trying to control the outside mini-split without an indoor unit. I've seen that most condensers have an "equalizing" part which equalizes the pressure between the gas and fluid line before the compressor starts. It's said to protect the compressor by not starting it under heavy load (pressure differential). It seems bypassing the logic of the control board would cut out the 3-5 second lag that does this function. Or did your unit not have this component?

Cool video from a non technical background

I just did this with your method. I got it to work. I plugged it in and it went from 79 to 75 degrees and shut off. Now it won’t turn back on. I don’t know what happened. I wasn’t in front of it when it stopped working. Any idea?

It might be the histerisis number that is wrong. How warm did it get and still not turn back on? I don’t remember what the default is but if you wanted to keep temps between 75 and 78 you’d have a hysteresis of 3.

Know it is dangerous 10:46 and still you touch every wire on that capacitor with bare hands😱 what the hell...??
