You're a fair bit smaller than me, but the visuals of seeing these historical gowns on something other than the fashion plate silhouette is unbelievably helpful to feeling like there may be room for me in historical costuming. Also this gown looks BOMB a.f. on you.
Hello
I love the way Rebecca looks in a well-fitted period gown. She is so lovely.
Honestly, one of the things that makes this my favorite sewing channel is the acknowledgment that sometimes you just gotta take a break because a fur baby requires attention.
I'm getting Lizzie Mcguire movie vibes from the colors of the fabrics.
The trimming is really bringing the bodice to life! I’m loving all the little ruffles on the sleeve…. And BTW, I’m convinced that the reason the sleeve forms on our sewing machines are so large is typical default to male sizing!
I like how the collar looks with the two rows of velvet ribbon and lace edging. The bodice is coming along marvelously.
It's coming along nicely. I like the collar. Nice job. Can't wait.
Thank you!
I adore the colour of the silk.. This project is coming together beautifully.
Nicole Rudolph has a real informative video on covering a parasol.
This is such an awesome dress! The fashion plate looks great, but seeing you actually wear your version of it took my breath away. It’s stunning and you aren’t even done with it. Can‘t wait for what you’ll do with it next 🤗
It is coming together nicely. I love all of the trim that goes on this dress. And I have to say I adore the Beauty and the beast dress. I have looked so many times for this fabric in the EU, but no luck 😢
Thank you! I hope you're able to find that fabric at some point. I don't know if it's worth the extra shipping cost, but if it's still available in the US, maybe I could ship it to you?
Try ordering it from the USA . I’m in England and often order from the US, not everything works but it’s worth a go xxxx
It's not that I don't want to buy from the US. But if I buy it directly from a store I have to pay an import fee at about 30% of the price, normal tax at 25% plus an extra free of 120kr (18$). All the plus the price of the item and normal shipping, it ends up being very expensive. But if someone sends it as a gift to me, I only have to the normal 25% tax.
@@mariathorning9848 yep. I can no longer afford to order from UK or States. Not just Spain trying to make UK pay for Brexit!
Fabric from the US is taxed higher here in Denmark then from UK. But it is still expensive to buy from outside the EU. When I bought the last Pattern of fashion book from UK, I ended up paying more for shipping and tax the the actual book.
Oh, cat chaos in a sewing room. 😀 Yesterday mine insisted, with her whining meows, on being in my lap while I was trying to hand baste. And that's not even her favorite spot.
My cat's favorite spots in the sewing room
1. Patterns, especially ironed tissue paper ones
2. Clean fabric or my work on progress
3. My lap, but only when I have a needle or pins or seam ripper in my hands.
4. Finally, if I'm lucky, the cat sleeping area I created hoping she would stay away from all that other stuff.
Why do cats like sharp things so much? Dora likes scissors, pins, seam rippers -- it makes no sense (and makes me worry!)
This is amazing! Love the design, the color and the decorations you put on the collar. The collar is laying oddly on your right side as well, so it will be interesting to see how you are able to fix that. I truly admire your patience in working out all of the kinks that have come up. The sleeve pleating looks amazing as well. Good luck with hand sewing those. Again, you patience is admirable.
OMG that hot ruler! That is so cool! Thanks for sharing...need that now.
Also Dora with that bow...this probably says some strange things about my personality, but there is something about putting clothing on cats and looking at their displeased faces that brings me so. much. joy.
Hey 👋
I’ve noticed that Prime shipping isn’t what it used to be (in Uk). Such an interesting video. It’s great to watch you designing as you go along, and some mega problem solving going on.
Hi Rebecca, Just wanted to say that the purple-ish plaid dress your wearing is super cute! I love that collar!
Lady R, thanx for this series......you have such great taste, and have made one fantastic costume after another. i'm so impressed with your talent and creativity
the lizard feeling made me LOL. this was so much fun to watch. I'm excited for next week!
also, I have that hot ruler. it makes life so much easier when I'm doing narrow hems!!!
Wow! It's looking GOOD!!! SO EXCITED!!!
It looks nice. I agree about the lack of contrast of the collar. I see a deep purple of violet velvet for the color as a big contrast. Or I guess a pink like your tassels. And when you see velvet ribbon, buy 3-4 rolls at a time. But you are an amazing costumer and fitter on self. That is tough. And thank you so much for sharing how to make covered buttons! Easy and beautiful.
Just find your channel! I'm so happy 😊 😃 this dress is gonna be gorgeous 😍 love the silk!
Def read the title as “Sewing a Sick Bodice”, and I thought “yeah I bet this bodice is going to be effing sick, Rebecca knows what’s up”.
I like how this ensemble is getting more and more in every video! 🥰
I'm in love with these sleeves!
That hot ruler reminds me of the first (and last) official sewing class I attended! They had us using cardboard with sharpie marks rulered at 1/4" and 1". I think they were cut out of cereal boxes, lol-- yours seems much better😂😂
It’s all coming together so nicely. I love your random bag of callers! Even if you wished they were labeled it worked out for you this time!
I so want to see you do a dress from the Gilded Age show. I know they're not period accurate, but I'd love to see how you'd recreate one of Bertha Russell's dresses!
I love the ruffles! The bodice is coming together beautifully. My thought with the collar would be instead of curving round at the bottom to where it meets, carry on straight instead so it meets slightly lower in a V shape. I also can't quite see whats happening in the fashion plate, but that just seems like it would fit in a slightly more flattering way.
The sewing machine thing is why I hem kids arms flat and then sew them together
You are a Pleat Master!
Dora looked regal in the bow! And of course she wants attention when you're in fabric she can easily damage! lol
You're chuggin' right along!
Sooo complicated. I love watching your archaeological dissection of the dress. As to the cat issue. What does one do with the cat? It’s quite clear, just exactly what Dora wants you to do and the same holds true for Lion. Great video xxx
Prime shipping, along with all other retail perks across the industry, is being impacted by the global supply line challenges.
Love the trim and the brighter pink velvet ribbon. And the arm lizards are cool. :)
I had fingertip pain in my right index finger quite recently (a combination of overuse-induced arthritis in the topmost finger joint and an infection), and I've found that a rubber thimble helps to protect that fingertip while it rests. (The 10-pack of assorted sizes I found on Amazon was in both the Arts/Crafts/Sewing and Office Supplies departments; the 2nd-largest size was a good fit over my bare finger (with or without a Bandaid over the injured joint), and the largest size fits great over my fingertip when I'm wearing a compression glove.)
It's starting to get really interesting, maybe even exciting!!Can't wait for the finish!!!
I am sure someone may have already told you but folkwear patterns has a free parasol cover pattern….just in case you want to give it a go 😜
Really helpful. Thanks 👍
Hi, thanks for reminding me that the sleeves are a different colour as I kept thinking it doesn't look the same? Because it isn't.💖
This is so good.
I can still get next-day Prime shipping (at most 2-day Prime shipping) on a lot of stuff on Amazon -- but no guarantees that such would be the case with items in Amazon's "Arts, Crafts & Sewing" department. I did once get a 10-pack of satin ribbon in assorted colors from Amazon in time to use 1 color of the ribbon for a gift bag drawstring in a crochet pattern test (during the brief testing period, yet!), though.
Always makes my day to see a new video!!
Could you do the collar out of the same fabric as the sleeves, for more contrast? [Edit: Okay, never mind -- you did something else!]
It’s looking so good!
Hello
Looking good - I love the pleats! Dunno if Etsy is a viable option for you if you need ribbons, etc. I've used Amazon & Etsy for sewing supplies & like 'em both, except for waiting for delivery (delayed gratification!). I've also ordered fabrics, notions and accessories from sources that aren't Esty or Amazon based from all over the world (my local shops don't have nearly the variety of stuff I want). Waiting for my goodies to arrive is like waiting for Christmas Day so I can open my treasures! Looking forward to seeing all those gorgeous buttons sewn on the bodice. Dora looks lovely in pink. Would she tolerate a pretty pink collar with a bow on it?
I've used Etsy a couple of times for sourcing things, but stuff tends to be way more expensive on there (and takes a lot longer to ship). Etsy also has one of my pet peeves, which is people listing things in non-yard increments, so you think something is a good price and then it turns out to be like a fat quarter or half yard.
I wish I could stick a bow on her, but since she's an indoor/outdoor cat, I worry it would get caught on things.
Beautiful!
It's coming along so beautifully!! Can't wait to see what this project looks like when its done!! as for the collar---are you sure that the lines on the fashion plate are the stripes? is it possible that they could be pleats? I don't sew and know little about the 1880s, so I don't know if that's possible, (you'll have to forgive me if it's completely just not a thing that would or could happen ) but i thought it kind of looked like it was pleated? Just a thought. Anyway, beautiful work!!!
Hello
I do think it's probably pleated in this plate, but I couldn't find anything like it in any other plate, so I went with a more standard collar.
I had the SAME experience with amazon - arrived the next morning from interstate, so i ordered another of the same item...took a week to get here! No logic.
I have a cheap Kenmore sewing machine from 2003-2004. It was 249 $ CAD or something like that and most sleeves fit over the free arm! 😛 So the trick might be to have a cheap sewing machine.🤣
Nice! I think a lot of times, the smaller machine, the smaller the arm, too. Mine is such a giant machine, and I love it, but I wish the arm were smaller!
Noel from costuming drama knows how to cover parasols maybe she could help you
For the collar: Looking at the distance between the curve of the top of the sleeve and the collar, I would think it was pleated or layered somehow. It looks like the shoulder is raised, as though it had shoulder pads.
Or maybe like a narrow bertha to cover the shoulders instead of highlight them.
Yeah, that's what it was looking like to me as well, but I can't find anything like that in any other fashion plate of the era, so I went with something more common.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions How likely is it that the artist was supposed to draw the pleats close to the neck with more bodice exposed near the sleeve, and made a mistake? If the collar was pleated or gathered vertically at the neck, it would have given height at the neck, that would have emphasized the slope down to the shoulder. Also, instead of coming to the point at a straight angle, maybe it comes down (note how close it appears to come to the sleeve front) and then curves inward. The whole effect similar to that of a necklace hanging low, a parabolic curve.
The striped fabric kinda reads silvery blue on the screen not a bad color just looks pretty different next to the plain blue silk I’m hoping it’s just the way the camera is picking it up it’s pretty but it’s a touch not quite right looking at least with it not trimmed… trim will probably change the pick up
Yeah, I feel like it reads way more silver on screen.
I see the .5 blush velvet trim on the JoAnn’s site. Is that the one you are searching for?
No, mine is .25".
🇨🇦😃 I guess the question that remains is did you remember to label that new collar?
Haha! Ummm, no. Lol. I don't even remember if I made an actual pattern for it! 😂
@@LadyRebeccaFashions whoops… oh well just more opportunities to practice then I guess lol
How do you serge your taffeta? Every time i try either the looper thread breaks or the needles are too big and cause runs in the fabric unless i use fusible interfacing on it.
I've never had a problem serging taffeta, though I always serge with three threads. Is your needle sharp?
I tried a couple of different size needles it maybe the fourth thread. I haven’t tried using it with only 3. Now i know what i will try next. Thank you for replying.
The 3 thread overlock worked! No more runs in the fabric!! Thank you so much for your help. I spent hours trying to figure out what was wrong but I couldn’t find any helpful info online or in any of my books. I was honestly afraid to go forward with my nieces prom suit. She wants a 1930s ladies tail coat and the fabric is a navy taffeta.
@@crystal8160 yay! I'm so glad to hear it!
You mentioned, you could sleep long in the morning. As you have a dog, how do you do this? My dog have to go early outside, he doesn t care if I have to sleep.
He has a dog door. Makes it much easier!
@@LadyRebeccaFashions Nice! You are lucky. In my house it is not possible to have one.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions After my dog woke me up because I sleep too long this morning for his breakfast, how do you solve this problem?
Has Lion only dry food? My dog get half of a can wet food in the morning.
@@Miezekatzenfan-yv8kq yeah, Lion eats dry food, and I only have to fill up his feeder about once a week.
Never having sewn silk, the sound of it kinda bowled me over. Had to rewind and listen again.
I thought the collar looked gathered almost
In the plate? Yeah, that's what I was thinking at first too, but I wasn't sure how to engineer it.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions yes...kinda like a ruched gather at the ends that go behind the bow and some tacking stitches around the neck...or fall pleats at the neck..
Question:
How do you know the ribbon you have is perfect for your project?
Answer:
You don't have nearly enough yardage and they don't have any at Joann's.
Every time 😶😒
100% accurate.
I know little to nothing here. Buuuut if you look at the coller on the fashion plate it look gathered?? Puffy?? It has texture..not from the strips..so it's not laying so flat against you...I hope I'm describing and saying it right
Yeah, that's what it looked like to me too but I decided to take the easier route that I could find in other fashion plates besides just this one.
@@LadyRebeccaFashions I just thought I would mention it cuz you were saying you didn't like the collar how it was laying..my suggestion..do the puffy collar I think you will like it more..harder?? Heck yes but more satisfying
M.
I've watched several of your videos now, and you make beautiful clothing. However, I'd prefer you show us more of the actual process instead of just explaining what you did. You seem to spend a lot of your videos just talking about and explaining what you did, but I'd prefer more time to be spent showing us the process, like the sewing, and the actual making of the garment. Just my opinion. Other than that, it is a beautiful piece.
