Last year we had temperatures above 100 and up to 105 degrees every single day in summer. We had no rain and these temperatures for more than two months. We were designated as being in Stage D4 drought. All my gardens were growing gloriously with ZERO water added by me. It was all thick wood chip mulch acting like a battery for water from months before when it rained a few times. This year my grounds are covered in melon vines growing gloriously and up the fences as well as the ground. I've planted a bunch of watermelon this year as well to see how far I can push this system of gardening in the Texas heat and see if I can grow huge water melons with zero watering removing all but two per vine to get monster sizes.

Awesome! Yes this Texas heat can be killer if you don’t mulch pretty heavily. I use pine straw because it’s what I have and it’s been working great. I like that it’s also free. ☺️It kept my garden happy last summer and this year I am using it to get certain crops to grow that normally wouldn’t do as well. It’s a game changer!

I used straw mulch but found the slugs love it. Supplement but regular light applications of grass clippings. My dream water less or be free to go on a 10 day holiday in summer without fear of the garden dying. How do I get there?

Mulching helped me transform my soil from a rock hard dry clay similar to the soil at the end of this video. It breaks down so you need to add some every year or any time it thins out. We'll worth it though. I don't use fertilizer and I'm growing great looking plants. Add some green to it and you have a slow compost. The green will help add the nitrogen and other nutrients as it breaks down.

What I have found, out of necessity, I compost with whole leaves. So when everything else has fully composted. Some leaves remain some what uncompleted. Makes for great compost and draws worms.

I freaking luv your vids. You are so clear and concise - no BS, just jump into the point with education and how-to. I have been confused on mulch and how much. I put down about 12 inches of grass clipping around a cheery tree and it died soon after. LOL - I'm thinking now that may have been too much. A few inches is probably good.

    • @momcomputer6461
      @momcomputer6461 Рік тому +5

If you pile leaves around the base of the tree, yes, it can kill it. Spread them out a couple inches from the stalk and out to where the branches are as that will indicate where the roots are growing - then you can put clippings and leaves down thickly. Also, that deep of fresh grass clippings will mold and rot. Not good for the tree to be introduced to. Mix clippings w/leaves or let the clippings dry out a bit first. Sorry to hear about your tree!

Here on Vancouver island, we save oodles of oak and maple leaves in large mattress bags (with holes punched) to use as mulch and worm farm bedding year-round. We also get 11-22 yards of arborist wood chips free from our municipality every year to do the same for our shrubs, trees, blueberries and blackberries. The transformation of the soil and garden health and productivity since we started doing this several years ago have been amazing.

I compost leaves in my woods. SO full of worms! I ran low this year and also used leaves/pine needles from the ground. This is the first year all my tomatoes are healthy, not a single bug, and I am East Texas north of Houston where I have seldom NOT been overrun by leaf footed stink bugs. Composted leaf mold is amazing.

Thanks. Good info. I must share - when I buy Potting Mix from Bunnings (Australia) it's full of woody debris, so I sift it and add more stuff to the sifted Potting Mix for potting, like Jadam processes. The sifted out woody stuff becomes my fungal dominant mulch. Sometimes I soak this woody mulch in the Jadam processes and/or worm castings, then use the 'activated' woody mulch wherever/everywhere.

    Hello NATE! Thank you NATE!
Today my husband and I used the mower to chop up the Maple 🍁 leaves. Our next door neighbours kindly gave us 5 huge bags. We emptied 2 bags onto the lawn. Mowed it twice, as it will break down faster.
I mixed it with coffee grounds. Would have loved to have fresh cut grass as well. But it's winter here so I made do with what is available.
My husband and our grandson made a bin out of pinewood pallets, last winter. The broken down Maple 🍁 leaves from last autumn, are pitch black underneath. There is a Municipal Park near where we live, about two blocks away. It's about ten acres. Mostly massive Maple trees.
Last year I took our grandson and filled a few bags full of Maple leaves.
I have also covered the bare patches of ground on the veggie garden, with grass and leaves, chop and drop.
Thank you again Nate for the wonderful videos, to encourage us to grow vegetables etc.
It's hard work, but very rewarding too.
Building the soil is my job for this winter, in readiness for Spring. ♻️🌞🌱
    With gratitude. And much love.

That's exactly my problem here, and I have been working on a mulch solution. I tried shredded leaves but do not have enough. There is a sawmill close by and both sawdust and bark mulch are available. I'm going after several pickup loads next week. Even if my summer garden fizzles, I will have a system developed for the fall garden. Some plants are doing fairly well, I nurse them along with a tiny bit of water every night, maybe I will get mulched in time to actually get a harvest. Anything edible is a success here after 2 years of drought and clay.

I live by mulching. I have two wood chip no-till gardens and four conventional gardens, in which I mulch everything. One other thing about mulching is it helps to mitigate against too much rain, also, as it will hold some of it at the surface and it will help with erosion/run-off issues. I use straw as the cheapest and most convenient, get big round bales for 40 dollars here in Saskatchewan, Canada.

thank you my friend and yes that is absolutely the plan and the direction everything is going.... back to the land... I was on 220 acres fully off grid for about 10 years in Northern California... but tragedy struck and now I'm here making the best of it!!

@@gardenlikeaviking you landed in a good place, let me know if you want to learn about some of Indiana's hidden natural wonders,I grew up here and know a lot of good float trips, not so known about hikes,we are on 17 acres near Freedom slowly turning about three of it into food Forrest ,huge hukel beds ,and gardens ,I really appreciate your knowledge and sharing it ,there is a ton of info around plants ,water and nutrients, soil, and pest ,and beneficial bugs then to be more specific each plant likes or don't likes a little different balance of all these seasonally changing ,just when I'm remembering one line of progress I realize I had forgotten about ten others, and when I try to spread my attention more gets forgotten, anyway there's some great properties in the Owen county area,I'm self employed construction stuff and painting could always use a hand let me know if I can be of return service

I got a small wood chipper from Harbor Freight. Chipped a small shrub and mulched the raised beds with it. Good combo of leaves and branches.

3rd year of having a garden. First year, I was ignorant about mulch. The second year, I was a bit too shy with the mulch in all but a couple areas and didn't use enough. The places where I did were much more bountiful. Now I'm going full Viking and mulching thickly, and I see a big difference for sure.

Appreciate your explanations bro. I think it's starting to get through this thick skull lol.
I've been very surprised to see my soil still damp underneath the mulch, even with no rain or watering for a week or two...
Thanks again, and blessings to everyone! 🙏🙏
