I just saw one in neighbors yard. He flew right by me and went to neighbors fruit tree hung out eating for minutes about 50 ft away. Finally flew off such strong wingbeats. Hour east of portland or along columbia river. I have never seen one here so a treat.
I met a new (non-birder) friend who wanted to go birding with me. We were very fortunate to find recently fledged PIWO. It was quite a treat to watch the parents deliver food and the young try to navigate through the woods with their gangly bodies. Not every 1st time birding adventure is that interesting.
I love this video and the fact that you got to see the babies! I posted a woodpecker video on my channel featuring the pileated (and others) a few weeks ago too. I don’t see them as often as some other woodpeckers, but it’s always fun when they pop up. I find them so interesting and unique! Great job 👍
Pileated Woodpeckers' range extends south of San Francisco in the Santa Cruz Mts and they seem to be extending their range to the Diablo Mt range east of Oakland and San Jose. Now if someone could just locate a living Ivory Billed Woodpecker...
Even though we have a few of them in Nor Cal, I've never even managed to see one. Only heard a few, using Merlin to confirm. But finally, about 5 weeks ago in South Texas, I got nice shots of my lifer Pileated :) Whoo Hoo ! Very cool birds :)
Hi guys I work in Wales UK as a conservation manager today I met two lady birders at one of my nature reserves, one was from Wisconsin! Her name is Beth, she said she knew of you guys. Small world.
I was shocked to see a female visit my suet feeder so close to my house the last few weeks! Startled me as I was standing at the kitchen window. 😂 I have seen them further out and hear them a lot. It was sensational
We have a nesting pair on our property this year. It has been amazing to watch the excavation of the nesting hole by the male, and then recently I photographed the female feeding at least 2 juveniles. I was also privileged to see a number of Ivory billed woodpeckers in a museum collection yesterday. An amazing and tragic piece of history. Still trying to process the extinction of a species...
Love to hear their calls when I walk along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal park in Maryland. Question: pronunciation? PIE-Lee-ated or PILL-Lee-Ated? Thanks for this video and all of your work.
The size of a CROW?! Yeah that's a pretty darn big bird! I know we have woodpeckers in my area but I don't think Pileated (or at least none I've heard or seen so far). Getting to watch bird nests is always SO interesting - I know we can't just go round bothering the birds though. So how does one locate a nest to watch? Just luck? To be honest I'd kind of love a little series on bird nests in general - one of the things that got me more serious about birding was the summer that some type of songbird decided to nest RIGHT on my front stoop...Never did figure out what species of bird. Obviously the mother bird did not come out and chat with us, haha! She made her nest in an old wreath that we'd never bothered to take down, and raised three babies. My son and I still debate now and again what it could've been - not a mockingbird or a blue jay (too small) and certainly not any of the cavity nesters. Not a swallow or a swift either, since their nests are kind of on flat surfaces. But after that, no idea haha!
I'm from Europe so i never saw pileated guys but I often observe green woodpeckers. They are also big, though I before i see black woodguys. Is pileated bigger then black woodpeckers?
I had a pilated woodpecker at my feeder today!
🎉 Awesome!
Cool!! 😀
I only get them in the winter 😢
We have two coming to our suet feeders all the time. When they pound a tree you can really hear them drumming!
It’s surprisingly loud!
We had one come off the feeder to our dining room door. Lol he wanted to look in on us. Wonderful birds.
Very cool!

That’s awesome!
I love woodpeckers! Love seeing drum on a tree or near a cavity.
So beautiful
Thank you so much
Went birding yesterday and saw 2 piliated woodpeckers in flight as well as my first encounter with a yellow warbler!
Awesome!
I see them almost daily in my Florida backyard!❤ A real treat!
They’re so cool!

I have one around my feeder. Thank you for this.
You’re welcome!
Superb species and video, with a lot of information.
Thanks!
I absolutely love these woodpeckers. Great footage!
Thanks!
I think the pileated is my favorite, thought the red cockaded is neat too!
Love them. We have a pair that comes around to the suet feeders!
So cool!
I'm wondering why the pileated have stopped coming these past couple of weeks?
Burung berparuh kuat mampu membobol kayu .terima kasih sudah menayangkan vidio bagus ini kawan

They are shockingly massive birds!
Thx, just for history, I heard here in NW VA that they were hunted and sold for food at markets sometime in the distant past.
I remember this April I saw a pair visit my feeders , and I was shocked
Yeah! That’s understandable
I hear them every day here in NE Texas. I always wonder what birds make that sound.

Dang that must have been bittersweet

Depends who you ask but I’m definitely in camp Pill-Lee-Ated
We have 2 living in our woods. They made a hole in a dead tree. They live in separate holes. We live in East Texas
Very cool!

Looks like they’re around the same size!
Ah my nemesis and spark bird
It’s your nemesis AND spark bird? 🤔
Just saw a pair in florida
Awesome! They’re really fun to see in real life
@@BadgerlandBirding they are my favorite bird and it's so sad the ivory bill is gone. Florida has too much development we've lost so much Forest
I need to ask. The pileateds were coming every day but the past week they haven't shown. I guess I just worry about them. Is it a normal thing?
Yeah, their young may have fledged so they don’t need to find as much food or they’re finding food elsewhere. I wouldn’t worry about them
I sometimes see pileated woodpeckers in my area. I also love the ivorybill, since I saw one in 2018 not far from the Choctawhatchee River.
Until 2:20, I thought Derek was narrating.
