- Botswana SOLO Episode 1 #botswana #solo #overlanding #africa #4x4 is a short series in which I travel some of the most remote places in Botswana, namely the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) & 3 Islands on the Makgadikgadi Pan.
Episode 1 starts with me traveling from my home in Cape Town to the Khama Rhino Sanctuary to spend two days with some very close encounters with the Rhino there.

Great video... On the firewood issue...I have the same challenge with my Cruiser 79 Camper unit. On my last trip in Oct '23 I carried the wood in canvas bag inside the camper.
Thanks for the complement & for watching🙏. You should see what happens with it in episode 6 🙈
Nice one Tim.
Those piles of dung are called middens. It’s used as a way to communicate with other rhinos and mark territory. So basically new rhinos to the area will smell it and be able to tell “who” the other rhinos are is
Thanks for watching Bruce and Thanks for the insight. Lizette also sent me a message with explanation🤙
Good day sir. I just finished watching this episode I loved it great staff please keep showing us southern Africa. I'm watching here in Botswana.
Thank you Ephraim🤙. On Episode 6 already. Hoping to get 7 & 8 out in the next two weeks.

We’ve just come through Khaudum NP, south to north.
Hey a fellow Troopy in Africa from Australia 😜.
Thank you so much Kienny for the message I really appreciate it. I have not yet done Khaudum and hear good things about it. Safe travels. Love you Instagram pics

Botswana remains one of the ultimate destinations for overlanding, and the People and Government are so warm and welcoming🙏. Thank you for watching 🤙
Awesome, great video and commentary. May I ask which month you traveled. Thank you.
Thank your compliments mean a lot to me as an amateur youtuber. I was there in August 2023. Feel free to DM me on Instagram if you need more info.
That was epic!! Such great footage in that beautiful light. Well done…. Looking forward to next episode
Thanks Guys! Hoping the lighting the next one is even better 🙏. The Salt Pans are amazing!
Great video, Love the rhino shots. What an experience that would have been. I used Ultimate routes on my last Botswana trip, found them to be very good. Took all the stress of planning and booking away which allowed me to concentrate of other logistics. Will use them again. Safe travels!
Thanks for watching Kevin, and thanks for the comment 🤙
Beautiful 😍
My number one fan 😜❤
Great trip, when is the next episode due? You should make it longer than 40min :)
Thanks for watching. I am hoping to do the next one this weekend, but I have so much to show. I was thinking 40 min was too long 😥, so currently looking to split the island trips as I have some great footage and info that I don't want to cut it short. See you in the next episode.
Awesome!!! :)
❤

Enjoyed this episode . I remember clearly also the first time alone in the CKGR and it is daunting for sure without other company .
Thanks man. It was a bit for me. You’ll see in the coming episodes when I get to Xaxa I am a massive call about the “clear and present danger” Having done it I will do it again no problem
@@troopyinafrica looking forward to watching….. ya, after years of experience you can never be too blasé. Have fun 👏👏
@@thebuffalooverlander Thanks for watching 🙏
Wow stunning
Thank you very much for watching 🙏
Dung. ‘Midden’ is the name given to a dung heap or an area of communal defecation. Many animals make use of middens including white rhinos.
Thanks for watching Gary. Also for the info, I figured it had to be the Rhino. Cheers see you in the up coming ones when we go island hoping 😂
@troopyinafrica looking forward to watching the next leg of the trip
Quite correct. Rhino's always return to their own "middens" to defecate.
There are plenty of firewood around in Central Kalahari. Why did you say that need to bring own firewood?
It is my understanding sourcing your wood in a nature reserve is not allowed as it can lead to people breaking down vegetation and the existing falling vegetation contributes to a bigger eco system within the CKGR🤙
Thanks for watching 🙏
Do you have a ponytail at the back of your head. I saw a person at about 30.28 with one?
LOL 😂 na not me. Had one till about 29 I think. Just must be curles 🤙 Thanks for watching
It is normal behavior for Rhino to have dung middens.
Thanks Hein for watching🙏. I received this from one or our Troopys in Africa group today.
"Black rhino are browsers, you'll see pieces of twigs and leave in their dung. The male tends to turn his back to a bush and poop next to or underneath a bush. They're shy and midden often not seen unless you go looking for it on foot or unless you're in a pvt reserve where they're used to humans. White rhinos are grazers, their dung usually have no twigs or very few twigs in it. They tend to make the midden in open areas, as they tend to occur in open plains. Often next to the road. If I remember correctly it is the male that spread the dung n order to mark the territory. Females just poop and move on. Midden are mostly found on the boundary of the territory and the males will usually aim for the midden before letting go"
This is living. My dream is to overlanding in Africa especially SA, Zimbabwe and Botswana. It has to be on a 70.
Is you your sunset with 🦏 better than ASPW’s Sunset with 🦒 ?
Is that In today’s ASPW video? I haven’t finished watching it so not certain. Maybe you can answer 😜
Thank you for watching🙏. Feel free to DM on instagram if you need help.
Ahuh went to watch his one now. See what you mean. I do this for fun so no plans on selling still shots 😂. But I would rate my experience better😜
@@troopyinafrica
Haha. Cannot agree more. You must had an amazing experience. I am originally from Sri Lanka and currently living in Melbourne for past 18 years. I exactly know what you mean in game reserves, because I had the same experience in my home country with wild life.
Happy travelling.
@@RoamingRooma Interesting We had two ladies from Sri Lanka in our Troopys in Africa who just finished Southern Africa in their Troopy. We also have about 10 Australians who have shipped their Troopys to tour here. 🤙
@@troopyinafrica
That’s the plan. I am picking up my new V8 troopy in couple of weeks. Travel around Aus first and explore other countries
How can i come in botswana
Many ways you can get here. Land in tour buses or by Air in to Maun, Gabarone or Kasane. You can hire cars or have a Lodge drive you. So many ways to do it. Just depends on Time of year, budget and what you wanna see. 🤙. Thanks for watching 🙏
