    It looked like a chilly day, but your determination was richly rewarded! The emerald glass was incredible! I loved that bottle- what a find! And, such colorful glass treasures. But the pottery- oh my! Those pieces were incredible! Thank you for braving the cold to bring us another lovely adventure! Craig, as always, thanks for the great history lesson. Nicole, I can’t wait to see what you create on Sunday’s video! Thanks again, and do take care! ❤️🙏

      Thank you so much! Its incredible when the wind picks up in Pettycur Bay! Chilly, but incredible to feel the force of the sea! :D So glad you enjoyed the finds - I do not think we will find anything like the bottle for a long time to come - fingers crossed though. The pottery in Kirkcaldy is great - love it! :D

    Spectacular scenery in all the places we visited today. Love the little yellow car it makes me laugh. I think Burntisland was my favorite for the scenery. Those two large beautiful homes overlooking the water are beautiful. Great finds in all places. Thank you for the history lessons. Looking forward to the jewelry making video on Sunday. Xxx

      the two big houses overlooking the sea are called Victoria and albert cottages, after queen Victoria and prince albert

      @scottishmudlarking  2 роки тому +2

      Glad the wee car gives you a wee laugh - its good fun! :D Yes! Burntisland is a lovely spot, its always nice to spend a bit of time there... As West Nick say, the cottages - quite big for a cottages - are affectionately called Victoria and Albert - I'll have to post a pic of them from the front so you can see the name plates! :D
      The cottages mirror each other from the front... Its hard to believe, but, according to Historic Environment Scotland, they were built in the mid 1800s for the use of rail workers - lucky rail workers!
      You can see inside Albert Cottage because it was sold recently and the photographs are still on the sellers site! :D

    Some very beautiful pieces of glass and sponge ware. I noticed the manganese bottle bottom on the mosaic mural. It’s so dark purple. Something I’ve learned from y’all !!! Love you’re adventure. BTW…the swirly sponge ware looks like a heart! Beautiful finds and great video. Stay safe.

      Thanks so much Sissi! Oh that wee car is cute, isn't it!! I thought it was fab when Craig showed it to me and then it went along the road we went on too! I wonder how long that glass piece has been in the mosaic - there isn't that much sun in Scotland, so it's surely taken years to darken to that fab purple. Stay safe and take care xo

    First time watcher and now a subscriber. I’m so jealous of the quality of your finds. It’s getting harder and harder to find nice finished pieces of glass. I hardly ever find pottery or sponge ware on the beaches I go to in Maine and Florida. Looking forward to your next post!

      @scottishmudlarking  2 роки тому

      Hello and welcome! Than you so much for coming along and subscribing! :D
      We are very lucky to have so many miles of coast and historic industry in this area.. Its hard to image how much things have changed - Kirkcaldy, where we find the nice pottery, was once home to several massive producers back in its day... a lot of the waste from those potteries ended up in streams or on the shore. We have a playlist - Pottery and Potteries - with videos where we look into the history of that...
      Wishing you lots of luck and a few nice, rare, sponge ware and transfer ware finds soon! :D
      Best wishes, Nicole & Craig xo

    Did you ever try cutting the larger pieces of sea glass smaller and putting them through a rock tumbler to make them frosted and smoother?

    • @scottishmudlarking
      @scottishmudlarking  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Arvetta! We don't tumble our sea glass or cut it smaller - we let the Sea do the work and what we can't use we leave at the beach so the Sea can finish them off over time. I know you can make sea glass smooth in a tumbler, but they loose the frosting and become more satin finished and if they get tumbled more, they loose all the finish and look like wet stones... It's interesting to see, we like the look of sea glass how it's found on the beach though :) xo

      @arvettadelashmit9337 2 роки тому

      @@scottishmudlarking We use to rock hunt in Washington State. Daddy would cut and tumble the stones to make different things out of them. However, Daddy had to change the compounds in the tumbler to get a smooth shiny surface. He often took some of the stones to a buffing wheel. I now understand the difference between natural sea glass and tumbled glass. Thank you so much.

    What exactly is pirate glass? And do you have any idea where it got it’s name? Thanks.

    • @scottishmudlarking
      @scottishmudlarking  2 роки тому

      Hi! Pirate Glass refers to glass from old bottles - well over 100 years old. Although the glass is actually brown or green, it is so dark and thick, that it appears to be black.
      The name Pirate Glass is a wee bit of a romantic title for glass that appears to be black; is very thick; and dates to the times when large amounts of goods were transported around the world by large masted sailing ships.
      Nicole talks about it in more detail and gives tips on how to spot it, in this video. ua-cam.com/video/XX52hw8Hav0/v-deo.html

      Thanks so much Leslye! Sometimes we see interesting pieces in the edit and not at the beach.
