      Correct. He taped his speech at his home in England. According to his wife, he rehearsed and rehearsed it - because he wanted to look good in one of his rare public appearances. She also said that when he saw the speech the night it was shown, he was absolutely mortified at how flat, stiff, and inept his presentation was. 😬

      I think it's underrated by those who hate it and (often) overrated by those who love it. Not because it's a bad film, It's a wonderful film with a great story, but it's getting tiresome to hear people name it as his best because they're hooked on that "everything's conspiracy" mindrut or thinking there's an endless subtext in Kubrick's film. Some month ago some dude said to me it was his favorite film because it exposes the Hollywood jewish elite or some crap like that. I wager there are worse cases, as demonstrated in the documentary "room 237" about the Shining.
      Barry Lyndon is obviously his best work.

      From what I've read about Kubrick, he was never one to engage in conversations with people who wanted to know what he thought or how he worked. When he wanted to know what you thought, or how you would do something, he'd talk your head off. Apparently, this is the kind of relationship he had with Spielberg. He loved his work and would call him at all hours of the day and night to talk about things.

    I would say, in my limited experience, the hardest thing to do is not to snap at people or blow up and say what you’re really feeling inside when they’re doing a bad job, derailing the movie, etc. I found that I wished I could fire people but I couldn’t because I didn’t have anyone to replace them in enough time. You really find out who someone is in production and post production. They’re either lazy or self serving or just not interested in doing a good job or they’re just talentless. In making my first short which was very involved, I found a couple, one really, that went above and beyond and kept a good attitude the whole time. When you find people like that you have to let them know how much you appreciate them and try to keep them around as long as you can.
    Filmmaking is like a narcissist magnet. You gotta get good at filtering them out before it’s too late, which is nearly impossible.

    • @wingflanagan
      @wingflanagan Рік тому +3

      From my own experience, it's the quality control - something Kubrick mastered, and which the Coen brothers manage exceedingly well, too. The problem is, there is never enough time or mental bandwidth. You're usually sleep deprived and just trying to get the goddamned shot before you run out of time. There are several strategies to minimize this (excessive planning and storyboarding, pre-viz...), but in the end you just can't control everything. It's that knowledge, and the inevitable feelings of inadequacy that it engenders, that make it hard to get out of the car in the morning and face a couple of dozen people looking to you for answers.
      Kubrick's technique (concentrate fully on one thing at a time and do it as often as needed to get it right) is something only he seems to have managed to consistently provide himself. A combination of ruthless negotiation, bravado, willpower, and some luck in getting Warner Bros execs to see his value. We shall never see his like again.
