@@martinfarnworth6659 My uncle spent time with the band in the early 80s and actually had a spell trying to replicate the bass line and Dempsey was the guy who tried in vain to teach him. It was Dempsey in both studio and live versions. Rankine may have stood in on occasions but not in the main.
I love this song, like you said, the upbeat catchy melody and the contrast of the almost desperate sound of his voice is great together. Has a bit of an Echo and the bunnymen feel to it for me. There were indeed some top Scottish bands at that time. Cheers.
@@reactionextraction so glad you reviewed this song, They are one of the most exceptional talents ever from Dundee Billy was one the good guys and so sadly missed, great that he still lives on in his music!
Billy Mackenzie,he went on to become a much more powerful singer, with more control over his voice in later recordings, check out "where theres love" "wild and lonely" from the wild and lonely album,or "give me time" from beyond the sun...you will not regret it
@@ohfour-seven6228 indeed,we could go on....his rendition of the rhythm divine, snowball, the crying game, wild is the wind...just such a perfect voice,i read in Marc Almonds autobiography that he thought his voice was better than Billys...dont think so!
Billy's voice was breathtaking. No one sings like him and probably never will. I hope more people get exposed to his music and can appreciate his artistry.@@martinlegg2151
Their pre hit stuff is very dark and crazy eight bonkers at the same time.Kitchen person, message oblique speech,White car in Germany are all so unique.
Filmed at Kensington roof gardens restaurant along with Club Country in another video. Weirdly the instrumental version of this was used as the theme for the BBC Radio 4 programme Weekending for years.
Alright, you discovered The Associates! I'm in Columbus, Ohio and a dj friend of mine turned me on to them. Club Country is the first song I heard from them and it was played at the three alternative dance clubs at the time. But the album, Perhaps, is breath takingly good. By that time the band was only Billy Mackenzie, solo. The album tanked, only 44,000 copies sold but it was brilliant; a must hear. My dj friend taught me to mix (with turntables and mixer) and I worked every song on the album on the really mixed mix tapes I'd make for friends. Cuts to check out: Those First Impressions (extended mix if possible), Waiting on the Loveboat, Schampout and the incredible Breakfast (so darkly beautiful) and The Best of You. They also did a cover of Blondie's Heart of Glass that's amazing. And I worked the song, Something's Got to Give, on multiple mixes. Billy's voice is a work of art, as you'll discover if you dive into the music. I've caught a couple of reactions with you and your son, but The Associates got me to subscribe. Looking forward to more from you!
He actually was not a fan of it himself. He felt it was a desperate attempt by the record company to get him back in the top 40.He hated the accompanying video aswell.
I haven’t watched the video 🙃 but to me that’s one killer tune … great remake , probably only song I had heard from them so thought they were an electronic band, ha 😂
I heard Billy used to do Heart of Glass in his live sets and decided to include it on the Glamour Chase album. He also wrote a song, The Rhythm Devine, with Yello and Yello recorded it with Shirley Bassey. It's incredible and Billy then recorded it himself. Definitely one to look into.@@reactionextraction
He really deserved far more recognition and success than he got.
Billy's voice & Alan's musical imaginings make the Associates music bewilderingly gloriously timeless. RIP Billy & Alan. What a legacy ! . .
The Associates were amazing, a unique band.
I am so excited you did this. This band were so influential for me as a 13 year old in the UK. I still listen to them today.
Me too . I was 17. Pure Class. Unique.
"the alcohol loves you, while turning you blue " remember the days when hit singles used to have something to say
One of the best tracks from the 80s - great hook and still sounds great.
Great early 80's Scottish band, always liked their other big hit around the time
"Club Country" which equally did well in the UK charts.
I agree with Club Country. Breakfast is incredible too!
OK I gotta do "Club Country" now 😎 this band is totally my kinda vibe.

Dempsey's Bass on this track is pure class!
Although apparently Rankine actually played it.

Also it is rumoured that Both "William it was really nothing" and Sueudhead are both an affectionate dig at Billy Mackenzie by Morrissey.
Brilliant tune! Underrated Dundee band ! Fantastic reaction!
James you are da man 😎
Superb song, I'm not biased just because I'm Scottish
You are. (only joking my Scottish Friend.).

@ianmcdonagh142 Alas, Billy and Alan no longer with us.
Yep.She was hot.
I totally didn't know that 😎 now I just Gott look up who that is :-)
Interesting, not bad. Never heard them before, but sort of sounds familiar at the same time.
Don't forget the skids lol
If you are looking for some more Scottish bands may I suggest Scars , The Undertones and Fire Engines. There is more but.......
Thank You ❤️
