[52] Master "Magnum" Padlocks Picked and Bypassed

  • The security provided by "box store" locks is generally unimpressive. If people knew how bad the locks they use to secure their valuables are, they would be appalled!
    In this video, I address two locks that are sold as "high security," but would give a skilled thief only a few moments of pause. I bypass the Master M176 faster than you can open the lock by entering the combination. I then pick open the M930 in seconds.

      "Exasperation" is the word we're looking for. This is the reaction one has when faced with a thing that simply makes life as a whole less valuable.
      We've seen LPL pick a lot more Masters since this video, and he is still deeply disappointed with them. The fact that they're one of the biggest market shares in this country makes them being so bad, so much worse.

      @MystikIncarnate 4 роки тому +7

      It's not completely wrong. All things being equal, more cost = more investment in security. unfortunately, that doesn't account for greed and profit margins. To be fair, these seem to have quite a bit of effort put into the materials used in construction, so they're very likely to be legitimately more expensive to make; Master just didn't put in any effort into the cores and put in cores that are so bad that they can be picked in a matter of seconds. it's like having the heaviest, strongest door with the best locks and a window next to it with no security. The weakest link.

    • @yeetpeet9660
      @yeetpeet9660 3 роки тому +6

      I don’t think the average sales associate knows much about lock cores nor do I think they’ve tried picking the lock to see if it’s actually good, they probably just knew that it was hard to force open with destructive attacks and went with that. To be fair, it’s built out of a good material.

  • @ShortArmOfGod

    I had the combination one. The lock broke, but I didn’t know it had such a huge flaw!
    The one I had was on a storage shed and after a few years of not being opened, the combination tumbler had seized and stopped turning. With just a flat head I opened the lock in minutes. (I did not know of the bypass flaw... and when removing the cover to the dials.... it poppet open! Now I know why, ...and to avoid combination locks!)
    I stopped in here to see if you could explain the flaw and didn’t realize how bad it actually was!

    I enjoy seeing these LSOs (Lock-Shaped Objects) humiliated. In the UK while Master Lock padlocks have dominance, our general consumer-grade door locks have tighter paracentric keyways and generally we'd have spools or mushrooms. Where we fall down is the prevalence of snappable Euro cylinders or keys with minimal bitting variation, so unskilled attacks are common. We also have the same inflated marketing claims about super-duper hyperlightspeed unpickableness, but it does feel like we have choice. There's also some degree of confidence the consumer can gain from kitemarked cylinders. It's actually proven quite a challenge for me to obtain Kwiksets, Schlages and American Locks but once I had some, I was able to use these to learn quite a lot about how locks work, so they do have some limited training value at least.

    I have this lock. The nut and bolt that holds the core cover is easily removed when locked, and the core drops out. Using a pair of side cutters I am able to grab and wiggle the nut from the bottom, loosen it and after it clears the dimples on the underside of the nut, simply unscrew it. If it didn't wiggle lose you could just get more aggressive and rip the head of the nut off. A bike thief I met revealed this to me.

    Great video ! Before i started watching your channell, i allways figured Master locks were adequate / decent locks. How did they keep this secret this Long ? I Just accidently found out that Master lock was founded in 1921. 100 year anniversary coming up. i wonder what kind of lock they will come out with for a 100 anniversary lock ? im frankly appalled by the lack of security in thier locks now. Where does one go to get a decent lock these days ? i went to home depot & all i see is master locks & if u look at the locks. they ALL have the same key number. Thier is 12 locks in a row all with the same key #. Great if u want 12 locks All Keyed alike. Not so Great , When all the guys buying locks can open each others locks.

    I would be interested in seeing this lock revisited, I just recently got interested in lockpicking and bought this lock along with 3 other Master locks as practice. It sounds like maybe Master took the hint and put a better core in it because I found a 6 pin core, only using 5 with 5 spool pins and I have yet to get into it. It seems to have some serious potential considering how strong the rest of it is, especially if you could re-pin it with 6 pins. Of course the next Master in line that I got had the same horrible 4 pin core as the rest...

    Today I Learned - If one was to use the one on the left to "secure" a $10k asset in a public place, i'm an idiot. I suppose I should go find a LOTO 6-pin like the one you described and swap cores? I'll have to search for your best of the best video... Thanks for the insight... Subscribed!

    I know this is an old video but it makes a point that I try to explain to other people. It doesn't matter how much of a monster a lock looks like from the outside. All that matters is whats in the lock. Will have to save this video to show my point as best shown making your point. THANK YOU

    Just made an $0.90 M10 key blank work in W401 core by milling a grove on the back, setting the key blank to align to the tip and letting the key cutter add the 6th pin on the key stop. I also had to grind where the base meets the shaft to allow it to be inserted all the way.

    I have this lock right in front of me right now and lpl makes this look easy as typing in the security pin to his cellphone.
    Am I using too much tension? Not enough? Is my pick pressure too hard? I can only pick 4 pin padlocks as of now. started 2 days ago but have hit a major road blocks with the higher pin counts.

    O_o I just found this channel by mistake. I am a mover and drive cross country with peoples EVERYTHING! Entrusted to me for the safe delivery of their home contents to their new place. I have been using these (the one on the left) to "secure" the truck while I sleep in a hotel. Dear god have I been lucky. Now what? What lock can I trust?

    If you still have this padlock, how about testing it against the pipe wrench? The shackle is definitely very hard, but is it also tough? great video, did your friend reimburse you for these? Looks like he owes you some tuition fees too;)

    Those Master crimped cores can be taken apart with ease. Turn the plug so the crimp is lined up with the bottom of the keyway and the plug will slide right out. I have re-keyed many of these for customers over the years. Master did this as a cost savings.

    Lpl very vague and difficult question... I'm new to ur channel but tbh ur the only channel Iv watched so far and Iv watched idk how many videos of yours in the past few days but I had a question... Out of all the common retail stores what brand and model of padlock would you recommend for most pick/ whatever proof?

    • @lockpickinglawyer
      @lockpickinglawyer  7 років тому

      It depends on what you are using it for... but one of my favorite generally available, general purpose locks is the American Lock Series 700... of course, the particular application may call for something better (or smaller).

      +LockMan28 Thanks. It's definitely a WTF moment when you realize that Master puts a tougher core in their plastic locks than in their steel "Magnum" locks. Someone has a sense of humor.

    • @michaelzdanis3979
      @michaelzdanis3979 4 роки тому

      @@lockpickinglawyer Actually makes sense in a way. You have to both think of large scale economics and of the purpose of the locks. The LOTO is a warning and you don't want it opened by the wrong key (in an environment where there might be lots of similar locks). Physical damage would be noticed immediately. The Magnum lock is likely to be used where people might physically attack it (bolt cutters) but are not going to have keys which are potentially close copies nor possess picking skills.
