The entire fleet of H-1, O-2, S-2, OV-10, S-70, and C-130 aircraft used by CAL FIRE for firefighting were ALL originally designed, developed, and built with U.S. Department of Defense money. So there's that... P.S. The C-5 Galaxy was also designed and built by the U.S. DoD.

The first time I saw video of a drop shot from almost ground zero was from a UA-camr a few years ago who was camping on public land in Oregon. There was a t storm one night. The next morning he was woken by planes and helicopters. He hiked until he came up on firefighters and a dozer cutting a break. Hes a professional photographer and took video and pictures of the crew working. He then turned the camera and a large passenger sized plane came banking almost over him and dropped its load. The plane looked like it was not much above tree top. He was close enough he got a little shower. It lookked to be water. There was also a helicopter making drops. It too was a pretty good sized copter. I was amazed at how low they were

It's a very popular spot, but access from that side of the canyon is harder.. I think the missing hikers did start it, and could not race faster than the fire to their cars, so "went missing". Hopefully some others who were in the canyon from the north side will confirm it was them. Most people access that part of the canyon from the north. And on a July weekend, probably 50 people down there. Fire started on the south side, where they would have parked, and been outrun by the fire.

If the S2 holds 800 gal then why not use more AT802s. They also dump 800 gal and can pickup in lakes or larger rivers instead of landing to refill. Thing is you are limited to how much you can add to the water due to carrying additive in floats. Thing is they are also super nimble and more so after dumping

Forest management is a science, and it runs on three things. First two are education and local knowledge, so a good team will have a combination of your educated brainboxes and people who have lived in an area for generations and who just know stuff. The third thing is money. People blame camp fires and teenagers and so on for these fires but the reality is that yes, trees sometimes do just spontaneously catch fire for a large number of reasons, for example the wrong trees planted after the last fire, or simply a dry bush being in direct sunlight going 'whompf'. If you want to stop these fires then the only real way is to campaign for the people managing these forests to get more money so the only fires you see are controlled burns.
edit: important. Be careful about mentioning smokey the bear around forest management people. There is a angrily held belief that it's used by the government to avoid giving them the money they need to actually prevent fires.

But yes, unmanaged forestry can just 'spontaneously' combust, much like the belt buckles in the back seat of that Volvo, rocks, leaves, bits of twig, can get incredibly hot in direct sunlight especially if the ambient ground temps have been consistently high for a while. Next time it's a super hot day where you are see how long you can hold your palm flat down on the sidewalk/pavement and you'll be surprised.

But no one was ever worried about, and I never saw or heard about, direct sunlight igniting a fire with the contents inside their parked car, or dry brush around my house _"going whompf"_ .

Naw it's not that, fires go in a cycle and all it takes for an invasive species to take hold in an area after a burn, which is what has been happening globally for the last 80 years, and you end up with what looks like random fires starting. The most extreme example of what an invasive species can do is in Australia. In 1975 some silly idiot from my country (England) planted a single blackberry bush in his back garden in Melbourne and it's turned into one of the worst ecological disasters since the invention of leaded petrol for them.
