Part of the price markup is because of the licensing fee. Another is all the drum lacquered gold pieces. That said, I cannot for the life of me find the value in this set at all. The proportions are bad, it's inaccurate, and the sheer poor durability, and lack of poseability just makes it horrible.

I love the playfeature the designers included where you can fit Venom in the hulkbuster, that was my favorite scene from the movie! And the fact they pre-shaped a slot for his tongue to stick out makes for a great play feature in this $500 set, chefs kiss (all sarcastic btw)

It is kinda shocking that this year LEGO gave us both an incredibly impressive giant transforming mech (Optimus Prime, which while not completely articulated managed to nail the whole idea while being visually pleasing)... And also gave us this.

I feel like this set just kind of confirms that the Superheros Design team just isn't up to snuff with the other design teams. You look at the design philosophies of the teams behind Star Wars or Ninjago and see how intricate they make all their sets. It feels like Superheros as a theme just has B-team designers. It's something we've all talked about. The normal playsets are very bearbones and we all mostly care about the minifigures. Even the Daily Bugle, which I consider the best Superheros set, is a very simple and repetitive design. Now that Marvel has become the film studio in the world, these designers that weren't ever meant to be making these huge sets have to keep up with demand. But, this could all be wrong because I feel a lot of the DC D2C sets are really well made.
Who knows. Great Review! Thank you for speaking your mind despite getting this set for free!

You are right about your opinion as critical as you are I would still buy the set only to modify it as it is a mech with substantial weight that use techniques that can help with large mech mods. The potential this set has to be improved on and looked at from a custom perspective is game changing. But as it stands this would be the only reason I would consider purchasing it myself.

I think the thing that just kills me the most is the fact that they (at least it seems) sacrificed so much of the design in order to fit the stupid Iron Man buildable fig inside, a feature only a kid would reasonably care about. And what kid is going to buy this set? It doesn't work for adults, because it's far too clunky and inaccurate to be a good display piece and it doesn't work for kids because it's way too huge and there's no real way to actually play with it. It's just a lose-lose.

  • @WarBuilder5426
    @WarBuilder5426 Рік тому +2

I feel like this is one of the best examples of Lego not really getting the 18+ market when it comes to some of their builds.
Sure, the helmets and busts (mostly) looks good... but a lot of the people who'd be interested in those kinds of display pieces would rather just get a proper helmet, or a proper bust of the character, to look more accurate.
Sure, this is a very, VERY impressive build for a Lego Mech, but all the compromises it makes takes away from the look of the set, and the kind of people who would want a big Hulkbuster to display want something that can be more dynamic in posing. They want something that isn't as limited as a kids mech, if not more limited then the kids mech. Sure, it's going to just stand there forever once built, but it needs to be able to stand in a more dynamic position then "looking kinda intimidating".
I feel like Lego needs to look a bit closer at other companies when it comes to this stuff. It's all well and good to have adult targetted sets at prices only adults can afford. But at those prices, it still has to do more then just be a really big kids set.

I mean the gaps are kinda hard to get rid of what I would recommend is getting a bunch of spark red and gold parts and filling it in we’re you can and the parts falling of is because it’s more meant to be displayed

This set reminds me a bit more of bootleg LEGO sets.
My friend has a bootleg LEGO DeLorean that has a lot of issues that remind me of this set. My grandma has a couple of small bootleg LEGO sets like some different succulents (to go with the official ones), and those are extremely fragile, like this set. It has the same issue with the hood pieces only being connected by two studs and that's it. Worst part is that on the bootleg set, they make up the pots, so you almost can't even display them due to how fragile they are.
It's so strange how LEGO have made such an expensive set, yet completely missed the mark on it. I saw in the instructions that the designer said he included as many details as possible and the play feature, but honestly, if a single unnecessary play feature compromises on detail, build integrity, and even more egregiously the actual DESIGN of the thing, it's just not worth it. I'm sure people would have been much happier if it was accurately proportioned, while having to let's say remove the lower half of the buildable figure to put it inside. This set, in my opinion, really just isn't good, nor anywhere near worth the price.
The one thing I will say is I like all of the gold pieces. I'm a sucker for gold LEGO pieces, but that's not anywhere close enough to saving this for me.

Its pathetic that a $10 mech from this year has a far better minifigure than in this set which you are paying for $550 🤦‍♂️

Even Bowser, despite the uncanny feeling with the eyes... Bowser looks like a technical masterpiece in how they achieve the character by keeping him mostly authentic and adding a puppetry function that replicate actions from the games.
Honestly, they COULD have achieved something great with the Hulkbuster. But it's far too complex in minor details that it cannot be replicated in LEGO format. It's not like a car or a helmet where some concessions can be made to achieve some form of authenticity. Optimus Prime worked because the original character is blocky and has been reintrepreted in many forms of media or medium. This Hulkbuster tries to replicate the one from the Infinity Saga which is why it fails.
We've been oversaturated with the MCU and it's starting to show. Plus LEGO should have access to everything that would have made this armor more authentic on the inside. A static model that is completely accurate and stable would have worked. The second they added mechanisms with exposed gear, it "breaks". And the fact that this set is MORE fragile than the Tumbler from 2014 (re-issued last year) speaks volume of the quality control.
It's hilarious how the Tallneck manages to bring two communities together (Horizon and LEGO)... yet this Hulkbuster does the same, but for a different reason. Even the Tallneck's underside is more complete than the Hulkbuster and it's less expensive, 5 times cheaper (or 6 times in Canada) and it's a masterpiece. It's a shame from LEGO because they CAN do better and they did do better. Btw, I would pay for a full-scale LEGO replica of a Vader helmet... but if it was as bad as the Hulkbuster, I would be unhappy.

I think most of it is the lame attempt to fit the other iron man in it. Honestly, they should have just designed an iron man as part of this set because the design on this is incredibly lazy

I think so many pieces went into the torso just to make Ironman fit that they had to cut back on the amount of pieces that went into every other part of the build which is why it’s got such bad connections and huge gaps and also isn’t to scale

I want to cut the designers some slack, because finding the balance between mobility and aesthetics is incredibly difficult with legos. If you want to give joints full rotation, you have to leave spots open. However, this set seems to have the worst of both worlds. The designers also seemed to be indecisive on whether to focus on display or play and, once again, seemed to choose the wordt aspects of both. This sets biggest failure in my opinion isn't any one decision, but rather a failure to commit to a specific set of goals.

It's an insane mech just not a needed one. Definitely not a banger for its price.
I think the designer did his best but why the team decided on a $550 hulkbuster is beyond my understanding.
Not to mention creating it for the figure ruined the design significantly.

It seems to me the Lego marvel team needs to talk to the Lego Nintendo team. The nes was my favourite build of all time, the ? block intrigues me but not enough to buy it, and the mighty bowser looks to be a great set too but I’m still waiting for mine to ship. I wonder if this would have been better had it been built in the same style as bowser.
