the players today are way better for sure, but IMO, the game was way better then... when the goalies couldn't skate and a .399 GAA was elite.. they smoked darts in the change room and all looked like they could be anybody's dad.,, white, adless boards and the only blaring music heard was the organist pumping out Hava Nagila... sigh
I was at this game. Pat Boutette was my favorite player when he was with the Leafs; I was pretty p-o'ed when he was traded to Hartford. However, with Whalers he was on the top line. His goal at 1:27:10 was his 20th of the year - 20 goals was solid benchmark back then. Boutette would end up with 28 goals and 80 points for the season before being sent to Pittsburgh as compensation for a free agent signing.
It should be also noted that in the 1977 draft…the Leafs in the 11th pick of the first round chose John Anderson and Trevor Johansen for the 12th pick. Mike Bossy was available waiting to be drafted. The New York Islanders picked him for the 15th pick of the round. Bossy was a top scorer of the QMJHL with Laval 1976-77 (75 goals/51 assist) but he wasn’t good enough for the Leafs!!!!
@@marcsheehan4356 True but 13 teams passed on him. Yes the Leafs twice but also the Rangers twice and then 11 other teams. The draft is such a crap shoot. You never know. Me, being an Islanders fan am thankful BUT the Islanders had some bad drafts in the 80’s and 90’s too.

I was 9 years old when this game aired. To use an old phrase, I remember this like yesterday. All week, as a kid ,you couldn’t wait for Saturday night to come. Hockey Night in Canada was a tradition. Being in southern Ontario we would watch it on Ch. 9 CBC on these cold winter nights. I wasn’t a Leafs fan so I couldn’t wait for an NHL update to happen from other games going on that night. Life was great as a kid then. Miss those days.
This was the southern Ontario Hockey Night in Canada game. The national telecast showed Montreal defeating Philadelphia 6-3 at the Montreal Forum, with Mario Tremblay getting a hat trick.
Don Blackburn--original NY Islander. On the first Leaf goal by John Anderson, uncertainty over whether it went in, relied on the judgement of the officials at the game. No ten minute delay looking over dozens of video tape angles, and glory be, the world didn't come to an end and we're still here 43 years later. How did we ever survive without the endlessly annoying video tape confirmation of every f--king play in sports? How???

I can't believe that I was 8 years old when this aired. Great memories. I really miss Bob Cole covering Leaf games. 😎
Keon still looks good in his 40s.

43 years later still no Stanley Cup for the Maple Leafs…
Amazing that they haven't made a cup final in over 57 yrs, yet still have won the second most cups,
A Young Skip Cunningham behind that Whalers Bench ! 😎
Greatest leaf ever was a quebecer ( Keon ).
