The problem that usually arises with 11-15 or 16-18 year olds is they should get free bus travel, but despite this, the card WON'T let them travel with negative money, say if they miscalculated a tube fair and now need a bus, and the gate let them out with negative balance, they just can't get on the bus, and the machine claims you don't have enough money. For a FREE bus ride. With 11-15 year old's it isn't usually an issue because you can tell they're young. For 16-18 years old though, you're kinda screwed if the bus driver is in a bad enough mood.

In my opinion, the driver shouldn't have to deal wth non paying customers. It's stressful enough having to drive a bus in London, without adding the stress of having to deal with problem passengers. I've just come back from a trip to Rome and the drivers are completely segregated from the passengers, although you can talk to them if you need to. The card payment readers are at the front and rear doors, so the passengers don't even pass by the driver. Whether they tap in or not should be the inspectors' problem...Bus Drivers are not doormen, security guards or inspectors and should be left to drive without the hassle! :-)

One thing I'll like to add... Is when bus drivers take the pi*ss and drive off without stopping at an bus stop when Clearly a arm has been waved high up in the air as a 'Sign' to Stop so passangers can board the bus. Now a days drivers are so Blind and don't see signals, its like we have to shoot a air gun in the air just to get the drivers attention to Stop. This happened to me several times and because of that reason I was late for work. If your card is rejected on a station ticket barrier it shows a reject number. These are called POD codes, POD standing for Passenger Orientated Display. Common ones are 94 (please try again / bad read), 36 (not enough money), 35 (season ticket but you've travelled outside of the ticket zones giving you a negative balance). Not sure if the buses show a number but it'll be the same principle. There are loads of POD codes covering paper tickets, contactless, oyster and ITSO (national rail) cards

As a driver one of the biggest issue I have is those that were clearly sitting at the bus stop for a while because on approach to the bus stop you can see who is there and they are also looking at the bus and as the bus is approaching they get up, rush infront of everyone get on the bus and then stand there fumbling around in their bag looking for their oyster then holding everyone up and some of them then have this issue after they do find their oyster where it is saying not enough money and yet still they are wasting further time and holding everyone by continuously tapping their oyster.
Other issues are those who ring the bell or put out their hand last minute and those that when you stop and open the doors stay seated upstairs especially until they hear the door closing sound and alot of them still stroll downstairs to get off.. really annoying.

Nah man, it really is annoying. When your running early it is not so bad but when you are running late and your at the bus stop, nothing is coming and these selfish able bodied passengers are taking ages to get off the bus and by the time they do all the traffic is flowing and then no one wants to let you out and now you have to sit behind everyone. My blood really boils inside as I get it alot on the 341s or those who either ring the bell when your right ontop of the bus stop or those that sit at the bus stop playing with their phone or generally not paying attention or even standing behind the advert at the bus shelter on their phones as if bus drivers have x ray vision and your doing 15-25mph (depending on road speed limit) and expect you to suddenly stop to let them on/off. Or those that when your serving the stop they are standing there staring at you, staring at the bus no interest in getting on it would seem until you close the doors then oh all of a sudden they want to get on.

The public have no 'awareness/public information videos' on these matters...and so thats why I do these short videos....as it's a way for me to relieve stress...lol 😂...& for me to get the message across via a funny informative video!
I believe these videos done in the right manner will finally reach the public in time (we need 100s of drivers from all different backgrounds/cultures to vlog similar videos to the mainstream public).

And the journey is registered in TfLs app. But when revenue controllers board the bus, or train, they can’t read my card. It’s happened several times. Fortunately, they have believed me when I say that the card has been accepted at check in and check out. Have others experienced this?

      okay to clarify.
      1) oyster wasn't in a negative.
      2) zone 1-6 oyster and I had already gotten a southern service to victoria that day, a tube from Victoria and another bus that day, it was literally just that bus, After that bus I also managed to get the train back from london victoria to croydon which I clearly wouldn't of been able to do if it wasn't valid or in a negative, also if in a negative I wouldn't of been able to get the previous days journeys

I wish this system of contactless payment was adopted all over the UK. It would be a lot easier and less stressful for drivers not having to mess about with change. It would be safer meaning driver has no cash and isn’t likely to get robbed. It would be better for passengers who’ve only got notes and haven’t got loose change. Seriously it’s time all public buses went cashless. You can use contactless debit/ credit card, mobile app, or an Oyster card system. Better for everyone.

They travel free. If they have a pass. Seniors also travel for free, if they have a freedom pass. My grandparents are seniors, but they live in Germany. When they come for visits they can't just say that they have a pass when they don't. If you lose or your ZIP gets stolen, get a normal oyster. Free travel is a privilege, not a right. other councils like charge parents hundreds every term for their children to enjoy the same privilege.

I get this all the time working for the National Rail. A passenger once tapped in, only once though on the gate - POD read 36 - no money. Strangely though with the same card the ticket machine stated he had a valid season ticket. But the machine 99.99% is not wrong, especially when checking their journey history then finally they submit defeat and walk off.

In Portugal every card reader has screens that if there’s an error it will show the reason. Also bus drivers do not deal with non-paying customers at this time. In some networks there’s a message they can send from their console to the control centre to report non paying customers.

In Liverpool we have a Walrus card system (conveniently similar names) and a had a Solo pass loaded onto it which allowed me unlimited bus travel for a week for £9.60 and this was before we got Ticketer machines and had Wayfarer, which was quite temprimental at times. The one time I didn't have my receipt to prove the card was valid for travel, the machine in the bus denied my card and was forced to pay for a day ticket. I then got on another bus after that one, and the card worked...

I don't know about Oyster but the computer is sometimes wrong on Lothian Busses in Edinburgh. I've actually had it happen where I've topped up IN the travel office, not a corner shop, and the money hasn't gone on. When this happened I wasn't allowed on the bus and I had to walk back down to the travelshop to get them to issue me a bus ticket for the day.
It has happened more than just that once that the money hasn't gone on to the card in the correct time. I've also had it happen where the card just breaks and the money is on it but somehow won't work.

You do a good job bus drivers - thank you. What can happen also is you can be delayed on the tube due to cancellations, strikes, red signals and breakdowns and this results in your journey time exceeding 1hour. When you touch out you get charged £8.90 instead of £1.70. That can leave the balance on your oyster card short. Like a law abiding fool if you want to get your money back you have to go home and ring customer services. The last time I rang them it was waiting 55mins for a representative. I sometimes look at people who avoid their fares and then think of me. Who is the mug?

I've found that if you can calmly tell the driver what your intentions are they'll kindly help you. I had just gotten a contactless card and didn't know I had to use my pin in a transaction first for it to work on the bus. I'm sure that when the machine bleeped red that the driver knew what was going on. He explained that this stuff happens a lot, and have me a slip to pay online in a few days.
