Sensei: Masters of Okinawan Karate is a documentary series about the amazing martial arts teachers living on Okinawa, the birthplace of karate. It is completely free to watch on UA-cam, anywhere in the world! Series One has more than 1,000,000 views.

GOALS OF THE SERIES
1. Document the stories of Okinawan karate masters and their philosophy on life and their martial arts practice.
2. Record in the highest quality possible. Ideally 4K or 8K, RAW, multi camera, multi audio
3. Store the original data as an archival record.
4. Transcribe and translate the recordings to spread knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, history and culture.
5. Make the videos available for free online via UA-cam and Bujin.tv so that anyone, anywhere can see them.
The documentary series grew out of the Karate Masters Portrait Project which began in 2012. The portrait project allowed amazing access to the sensei, but it was only Chris Willson and James Pankiewicz who got to hear their stories. The documentary series is a way for us to share that unique knowledge with the international karate community.
The international karate community generously supported the first series.

At 1:47 the long hair guy behind Arakaki sensei ... it's me!
Beautiful day, there we were during the last 10 of 100 Naihanchi at the "2016 100 Kata challenge.
The day after, Guinness World record, about 4000 karateka all through Kokusai Dori practicing Kata.
Must of been awesome to have been there 🙇👍
You learned from the best. What an honor.
Hope you’ll keep doing these interviews! Looking forward to watching the next episode! Great job, keep up the good work! The world needs to hear the words of the Okinawan masters.
It's great to be able to listen to the old Karate experts from Okinawa speak about the art and their approach to it. For a practitioner of traditional Okinawa Karate in the current times, stuff like this is valuable for perspective.
loved the entire series of interviews.
These are truly inspiring videos and I hope you can continue with the series. If you are interested I can start with a spanish translation of the subtitles so more people can understand and enjoy these bits of wisdom.
Un saludo desde España.
Congratulations for the initiative. The video looks superb! I look foward to watching more!
Traditions are important.the true essence, the real thought, purpose behind it is the main thing.in karate it is of great value to learn & practice the traditional style.its the soul.when you become one,its pure magic.
Oh yes i would love to see that documentay. it is an amazung idea! :D
Thank you for these videos. I would love to see one with Choju KIYUNA or Seitoku MATAYOSHI sensei (top students of Seiko HIGA) ;-)
Wow! Great job.

Hey Chris, looks good...I would consider looking into a second camera and some audio gear...but solid content and well lit. happy shooting.
Thanks Adam, if the series is feasible, I'll be looking into the FS5 combined with a Shogun Inferno, but will also wait to see what the A7SIII is like before making any decisions.
Excellent video…. I enjoyed every moment. :)
Thank you Ron.
The Englishman James is James Pankiewicz sensei from Asato Dojo and Dojo Bar Fame. Great guy.
Only thing that makes my hearth bleed is these fat muricans (at 4:50) that has get their black belts in 3 years of lazy training. In my time you would get only green belt in 3 years of HARD training almost daily :D Good and well made video tho!
Well that was in taekwondo but still.
another problem I see regularly is peoples misunderstanding of what a 1st dan rank actually represents. There are a lot of people who think that a 1st dan is a high rank in karate, but in reality it is only a rank representing that the student understands the basic of the styles. I think a lot of this has to do with the difference in the way most schools train nowadays compared to how they did 40-50 years ago. It's unfortunate because a lot of schools worldwide have "watered down" their arts and the students of such schools never move beyond the point of practicing from pre-aranged drills and light contact sparring if any, to truely knowing how to apply what it is they have learned. Luckily there are some schools that do still keep a far more traditional approach to teaching karate but they seem to be few and far between here in the US.
While on Okinawa 71 - 72 I took the style of Shorin Ryu Matsumura.
The chief instructor was a Red Belt
who said he hat trained over 65 years in that style. I still practice it to this date. Some years back a practioner of a different style wanted to challange me. I told him my style and he backed down.
I have never had to fight anyone. Just the name fights for me. Great
videos. Thanks.
Raymond Haskins who was the “Chief Instructor” you are speaking of? Just curious to know.
Such a wonderful series to document these legends. So much to learn from the past! 温故知新
I love what this master has said about the nature of this art, purpose (being self-defence), and the need to teach the art as it was originally taught. I wish more American sensei would teach like this. So much wisdom in such a short video. Thank you!

Very nice video sir. The project sounds great. At 0:11 in this video there is a picture of a Master holding a weapon that I have only ever seen in Kung Fu. I cannot read the patch on his uniform to see information about his style. Would it be possible for you to provide the name of the master and his style? This is very intriguing!
Glad you liked it Stan. The karate master at 0.11 is Kensho Tokumura there are more pics of him on my blog travel67.com/2015/09/03/wide-angle-portraits-kensho-tokumura-hanshi-9th-dan-ryukyu-dento-kobujutsu-hozon-budo-kyokai/
@@OkinawanSpirit thank you sir. I will look for more information on this master and his style! His use of weapons usually associated with Ba Gua has piqued my interest! Though I see many pictures these days of Okinawan masters that have a rack of weapons usually associated with Kung Fu in their homes and training halls. Fascinating!
I m an Indian n I love Japan for people like u
Arikaki Ankichi wasn't mentioned, He was an influence on Shosine Nagamine. Maybe next video...
Oss
excellent video and a great wisdom from a great master, the traditional karate must be passed on to the younger generation ,sport karate will be there also, but the bushido must be kept
An Oral tradition is the root of what begat martial arts and in fact the traditionaly history of human kind by way of campfire story telling. It is the tradition of the peaceful warrior. It is a part of the entirety of the human heritage. Dōmo arigatō Toshimitsu Sensei.
