For a more powerful retrospective, the scenes from the Anime and their equivalent in the Drama were shown one after the other without transition announcements
Some tiny bits of sequence from the Anime were not included in the video because they had no equivalent in the Drama. I invite you to rewatch the epic Anime finale to get an accurate understanding of the character of Matsuda
Read the short commentary below
---
I made this video as a tribute to the character of Matsuda from the Death Note franchise.
Matsuda embodies kindness, loyalty and true morality. Sadly, he rarely gets the credit he deserves from the Death Note Fandom, which tends to be polarized between Light and L as the main bearers of Justice.
Along with Light, Matsuda is the central character of the original (Manga) Death Note finale. Unlike the movies, the Anime and the Drama both do, in very different ways, a great job at putting Matsuda at the forefront of the story. I thought it would be interesting to compare the two perspectives, and to see how the character is conveyed in both versions. This video is intended to be a reflection of that.
The Anime version shows a broken and deeply hurt Matsuda. Although he was a very innocent and naive character throughout the Anime, his violent retaliation in this sequence acts as a metaphor of his newfound maturity. That such a pure-hearted character ends up being the one punishing Light is also a powerful trigger for moral self-reflection (who was the real hero in the end??), as well as a more simple reminder that Good always defeats Evil. At the end of the sequence, Matsuda puts his sadness aside and makes the conscious decision to run after Light in order to arrest him, regardless of the fact that Light is deadly injured and is going to die anyways. Matsuda makes that choice because it is the Right thing to do: despite what Light has been professing all along, letting a criminal die is not Justice.
The Drama version shows a shocked and confused Matsuda. The timeline of the drama being shorter that the timeline of the Anime, the Matsuda we see here is still very much a young and innocent character. Matsuda is less verbal in this sequence, but his many hesitations and non-verbal reactions powerfully capture his inner emotional conflict. He shoots the first bullet to stop Light from writing on the Death Note, and in a beautiful new take on the original story, he is spared by his supportive teammates (Mogi and Aizawa) from having to give the two deadly blows. As an attempt to lessen Matsuda’s trauma, and as a last lesson to the viewer that Justice should not be in the hands of only one person, punishing Light becomes a collective effort. At the end of the sequence, Matsuda ultimately risks his life to save Light from the flames. Although his gesture is motivated by his friendship for Light, it is also, once again, a beautiful reminder that Death is not Justice.
I find those two different portrayals of Matsuda to be not only equally beautiful but also true to the soul of the original character. The Anime is and forever will be a masterpiece, and the Drama’s improved narrative and choice of cast was a wonderful gift.
I really love description of this video! ❤️
FloraBeautiful14 same
Because of this I read that really long description. Thanks,,
Never realize this is about Matsuda
Thank you all :)
In the hes gets burned to death in the drama
@@andreaaa_76 the drama is different he burns
How on earth did they find someone who looked exactly like anime Matsuda? It’s uncanny.
The L from The 2006 movie and dorama's Light are almost identical as well
Matsuda doesnt excactly have the most distingt apperance
I know! That was what I always was thinking.
Perfect casting 🤩
By finding out a human with an IQ similar to Matsuda.
Matsuda had really good aiming to shoot Light perfectly in the arm/hand in the drama and anime
Matsuda's a clutz until it matters.
Matsuda is actually one of the best shots in the entire police force. It's mentioned in the manga
He has an aimbot
And in the film version (2006), too!
@@TheLastGuardian30 what episode to they mention it?
Death Note is the only anime that:
-I like both sub and dub
-I like a live action(I am talking about Drama not that Netflix crap)
The only thing from Netflix one people really liked was Green Goblin playing ryuk.
Dai_Do93 his name is willem dafoe you uncultured bacteria
@@impacc4182 I know that ass, but he's also the green goblin and did a damn good job of it.
Dont forget the original love action movie, that shit was awesome
Netflix basically just took the characters and the notebook it didn’t even have the same concept
I do agree, Matsuda is a really underrated character and the Death Note fandom should shine some more light on him. Honestly, he's my favorite character and the description of this video was just perfect.
Yes!!! Matsuda has always been my favorite
"Shine some more light on him."
I really love him, he deserves more recognition
DONT SHINE *LIGHT* ON HIM
This is very late, but after Light and Ryuk, Matsuda was my favorite.I love him
Light:i am kira
Everyone: *PULLS OUT GUN AND AIMS AT LIGHT*
What they just gonna let a genocidal sociopath leave?
@@nyota7382 Are you idiot? Light is a good man
But what id light was joking and they aimed at a innocent man
@@chelXoposh1 have you even watched the show? Light turned into a insane murderer with no sense of sympothy for anyone

Poor Matsuda. Poor Light.
Fairy on Ice I honestly do feel sorry for Light. If he never got the Death Note he wouldn't have became a crazy serial killer.
Poor poor L
poor poor poorest of the poor L
poorest of poors poor poor L
I LOVE BOTH L AND LIGHT BUT L WAS ALWAYS RIGHT POOR L. POOR LIGHT.
To be honest the drama is better than the Netflix
Indeed
It must never be compared to all Japanese versions, be it the anime, manga, or the 2 live actions... the netflix version is a failure that should never have existed.
Y did they keep their names. Light "Turner" ain't smart. He's a Dip shit. He's more like Misa and Mia is more like Light but another dipshit
anything is better than that light turner bullshit
Agreed though-
0:40 they sound so similar
Mikays !, Yeh I thought so too.
its crazy how we know that Light was evil and twisted but we all still wanted him to win, poor Light
I never wanted that
True
I wanted him to not only fail, but fail gloriously. Kinda like in the live action and the manga. Arrogrant prat.
Like I really didn’t like him, I didn’t want him to win but I also did, I kinda only didn’t want him to win because Matsuda would die and I like Matsuda to much for that but I wanted him to win because I wanted to see how things would turn out once he “ruled” the world
Light was an absolute legend bro
1:05 Light just turned into a Zombie.
Lmfao
I am like Light and I also found that funny🤣.
I know this is a comment from three years ago but what actually happened is he missed the shot
😂
For those who haven't watched the drama, definitely give it a watch. Of course by no means is it better than the anime but it's definitely a solid adaptation. seeing the many changes in the first episode might turn you off but please keep an open-mind that they were aware (even mentioned this) of all the other adaptations already being done, thus they wanted to keep it unique and different from the other mediums. It is easily better than the Netflix one. Kubota Mastaka's performance as Light and his transformation from "Yagami Light" to "Kira" is truly phenomenal. He's the only one who should play as Light.
edit: grammar
Fun fact: i like deathnote bcoz of the drama, then amazed with anime.
The drama was actually really good. Heck I recommend watching the third death note live action movie since the first two are similar to the anime with a few changes. Pretty cool spin off that takes place 10 years after light's death. Interesting part was when at the end of the 2nd live action (2006) there was a teaser for a 3rd one coming in 2016 which really happened.
Where do I watch the drama?
i agree with you! the 2006 movie had a better ending than the anime and both Light and L were comically accurate. L appearance wise and Light personality wise. And in the drama it's the opposite (but i love drama L more for some reason). Tbh i just think that every version of it has something unique to offer (no not u Netflix) and that's one of the things i like about DN so much.
Light Yagami is very good here. But for L, I prefer to old L in the movie 2006
I like how Mikami doesn't die in the manga. His death feels pointless in the anime. Also in the manga, when light runs out of hope asks Mikami foe help, instead of Mikami being dead, he tells Light, "You're no God. You're just insane. Now look what you've gotten me into."
I feel like Mikami's death is symbolic, every who used the death note died.
@@cliftonl.2353 That's definitely true
@@cliftonl.2353 yeah, even Mia committed suicide soon after Light's death.
Woah cool
@@cliftonl.2353 And he would undoubtedly die later. The problem is that he gives up his life for what he thought was God. A God bleeding, whimpering and writhing in the ground. All delusions should have been shattered then. Gods do not bleed from normal bullets. His pitiful demands/pleas for help are not the actions of a deity. He could have just hung himself in his cell once it was all over.
Matsuda is an underrated character, even if he was naive trough the series he wasn't a character to not sympatize and in the end he stopped Light and also tried to save him from death
WHO IS THIS MATSUDA ???!!!
HE'S SO CUTE I NEED HIM IN MY LIFE!!!!
Mia Loo The actor's name is Goki Maeda, and yes, he's darn cute, even in real life ^^
yaaaaas i just googled him🤣❤️❤️❤️❤️

Mia Loo He hawt as heck
Mia Loo Once you do, there’s no going back 😂
1:47 I love how it almost syncs perfectly.
What movie is this one called
The real action Light has the same angry look like Anakin when he got defeated by Obi Wan.
The one who plays Light is such a good actor!!! Also Matsuda is a really good cast in this one too!
Everybody sleeping on the fact that Light survived approximately 6-7 shots on his entire body...
None hit vital organs but yeah he lost lots of blood
50 cent
Matsuda in the drama is very cute💖
0:39 0:47 I want to hear these two synced
😂😂😂😂
They're nearly identic
Really good acting on the drama's part.
Acting on point hahahahahaha 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
0:41完璧だよな。すごい。
It was so sad when Matsuda tried to go back and save Light and Aizawa had to hold him back💔
Drama was good..I first thought that it's gonna ruin the manga but I was wrong.anime was better but this is the best live action version
Well I wouldnt say the best. In my opinion the 2006 japanese live action manga adaptation into 2 movies were better. But this is still amazing. Honestly the drama would be higher if either 1. L would have defeated Light or 2. Light had a better death.
@@natsumi7388 i think it would be better if we got the real character of mello
edit: typo
@@natsumi7388 L had a way better (more painful) death in the drama! Also if L defeated Light there would be no purpose
@@N0URii oh yeah definitely! Mello hasn't been adapted in a live action yet i wonder why they chose him to be a puppet/near's other personality
Lights and Matsuda actor performances are legit the best out of any live action adaptation. Though I do think they went overboard with killing Light in the fire
Light refusal words due to his god complex
- atone crimes
- turning back
- admit to be lost
Love the irony that the "New God" of the world was taken down by the most unassuming normal man on the team.
yes
i knew that was gonna happen in the show since they called him useless
0:07 having an opinion in 2020
so true lol
0:42 damn i don't remember the drama being this scary holy shit the actor who played Light did such a good job it terrifies tf out of me.Then that sad music starts playing in the background ugh, Light's death is actually quite sad. PROPS TO MY BOI MATSUDA FOR BEING A BADASS THOUGH.
I love Matsuda's reaction in the anime. So fast and well aimed. Matsuda was disappointed, hurt and furious with Light. He totally loses it. Poor Matsuda and yet he's the one to pity Light at the end.
Well for this scene, drama captured it brilliantly. I can feel Matsuda and Light
fr fr
Light: I am Kira
Everyone else: **Points gun at him**
The way Matsuda keeps screaming Light's name in The drama 😟
The guy who plays light in the drama is great i might watch it now
Matsuda must be protected at all cost!!!

Awwwe, me too
Near had a really cute voice in the drama
true he's really cute
poor L,poor Misa poor Matsuda 😢
Matsuda in the drama throws fire and tires to stop light but it was too late
Ok but the actors for the drama are really good tho!! Like if the film making was a little more high budget it would look incredible!
i agree but at least the dialogue between matsuda and light was like..ditto, i really like this live action
in the drama it was even worse...
light was on fire he died in that exploding house he got shot so many times
ugh ikr, it was too painful to watch
Matsuda from dorama is too slow, Light could've killed everyone 10 times
It was in vain Light wouldn't have been able to kill all those agents
Javier Lopez Its fair to assume that Light only wanted to kill Near, that would’ve been a win for him.
@@cristiangonzales2040 There would be no victory in that, he lost in the very moment he was obligated to reveal he was Kira, and so he did, would be different if he had killed 'em all after revealing himself as Kira against his last enemies, with Mikami's help (not getting caught aswell) or any other way.
@lalrivunga hnamte We all know that, whether Light's objective was to not-get-caught or to "show he was Kira and then make his opponents feel powerless", he didn't "lose" because of any mistake he made apart from relying on anyone but him, and in this case leaving all the responsibility of killing those people (including Near) in that sort of warehouse.
On the other hand, I don't see how you can just affirm that Light's plan was to always reveal he was Kira once he knew he had won, when it is stipulated that his objective was to hide the secret and continue doing his "job", and once he gets to know L (with that tv broadcast), he fears the fact that someone could possibly find him, and even that soon, so that's why he cares all the time for his identity, both when he was pretending to have an appointment with that girl (and finally get rid of Ray Pember), or the moment he was just about to get caught my Naomi Misora, who was if not a 100% sure it was him maybe an 80%. What I'm trying to say, is that Light's primarily objective is to not get caught, and then, what you are saying about him revealing he's Kira is just a, let's say, perk of the job, as for instance he was just so close to being caught by Naomi Misora that the only reason que revealed he was Kira was because of a question, and other way he would have probably walked away after she left, and possibly laugh or something weird.
I find what happened with Ray Pember as an act of evilness together with a relieving feeling of winning. Who knows what would have happened if Mikami successfully wrote all those names and killed Near, Matsuda and the others, cause Light waited all the time it would usually take to make the Death Note work. Anyways, I think it is pretty dumb to deny that his overall target was to avoid getting caught, it is obvious, and whatever he did after or during someone's death (you get what I mean) is just secondary and the facts as we watched in the series were the result of Light turning more into a psychopath with every passing episode.
The drama one was lit
The Drama was way better the the Netflix Version
No shit anything is better than the Netflix version
Every death note film is better than the netflix poop note
how is the anime scene so much better holy shit
Drama is better than anime. Light has a backstory and some plotholes of the anime are solved.
Bro are all of them the actors who played in the anime?
They all sound super alike
No, they're not the same
in the 2006 movies and the anime the english voice actors are the same but not in the drama

This Death Note 2015 is better than english Death Note, they pick a great actor for Light and L.
i agree
I feel bad Matsuda...
if you care to answer after all this time, what would you say Near (manga/anime) represents? i’d say he’s an interesting take of the “puppet master” type character, with his use of questionable finger puppets to solve mysteries and manipulation of others like Mello (hence the quote “I have a pretty good idea of who Kira is thanks to al you’ve done.”) so “the puppet master always wins”.as well as proof that L’s ideology withh never die, while Kira’s will. since all of Kira’s main allies emded up dead (Takada, Mikami, Misa), but one of L’s allies, his successor, Nate River survives and lives on as a detective. i like him for being interesting and oddly cute, but his motivations are questionable with him using others to his advantage no matter if they like it or not, though it is for the cause of saving the world from a psycho. what would you consider his morality to be?
Spicy Milkshake He is Not saving the world
If mamoru miyano played light it would be much better.
I don't know how good Mamoru Miyano is as an actor but Masataka Kubota's portrayal of Yagami Light is amazing.
