    I feel like a lego school wouldve benefited greatly from being a sub theme rather than just one set, that way we'd be able to get a proper schoolbus, play area and school. Great review, love seeing you be critical in your patented honest way

      A school sub-theme sounds like a good idea to me too. Makes more sense than "Ice Miners" or "Deepsea Police" or whatever other weird themes they'll come out with.

    • @rodinclaus9380
      @rodinclaus9380 2 роки тому +19

      I'd tend to agree - a mix and match school system sub theme would go over pretty well if you had some simple but distinct builds. could even double up on some like having a classroom with pieces to be for science/music (with the parts being used to create more distinct features) and a core set that consists of the main entrance, cafeteria, and a requisite bus loop. Something of a 'my first modular' system that combines elements of the Hogwarts line of sets, in a way.

      They could definitely make a school with different classroom modules

      Or at least make the bus a separate set to the school itself, since 2 school based sets isn't too unreasonable. Still, I think something as large as a school would need to be a modular building if they were going to do it justice, since the city sets favour small buildings and more exterior space.

    I work at a school. We don’t have bus stops because the school is a bus stop. They should have put in basketball hoops or a bin of toys kids would use for PE or recess.

  • @orientalmoons
    @orientalmoons 2 роки тому +66

    I agree that they should have put the school bus in a separate set. They could still have put some road in the school set but provided some goals, basketball hoops etc so it could be used as a playground/sports area or a road.

  • @gasonfeist7238
    @gasonfeist7238 2 роки тому +37

    LEGO's pricing with the inclusion of road plates falls apart when you consider the price of them vs their size. 60304 Road Plates includes 4 of the larger plates and 1 half the size crosswalk one with ALL those accessories for $20 USD. Therefore, one new road plate WITH its accessories (ramps, 2x4 tiles, plates to attach to) is less that $5 (20/4 =5). Heck, Bricks and Pieces has just the plate for $2.20 USD. LEGO is definitely milking the new system for inflated price in LEGO City, and it shows when you price it out. But I digress.

  • @GregOrCreg
    @GregOrCreg 2 роки тому +20

    Totally agreed that they should have made two separate sets. One, a larger school bus, that comes complete with the road plate and bus stop, and the other, the school itself, with much larger interior, preferably a roof, and the ability to detach the top floor so that you can easily get access to the ground floor.

  • @jkb2016
    @jkb2016 2 роки тому +35

    When it was announced, I was really excited, I wanted this to be good. Unfortunately, the street plates take to much space and should rather have been used for a proper school yard. The school building should be larger and it's another set with NO ROOF! Would you consider a comparison to the Heartlake City School? I think they are the same price, so this should turn out to be fair. German Price is € 59,99 btw.

    Wanted to be a teacher as a kid (odd right?!?!) and even went to college (undergrad/grad for it) - only taught HS Biology for one year before I moved to IT... but a Lego School is something I always thought would be so awesome to see. Many individual great things with this, but the sum... the building, the bus... just not enough for me.

    Rather disappointed with this set and previous iterations of schools in other themes were much better executed (especially for their price relative to the volume of stuff). I'm not a fan of them including the road plate system in this set too, which is a really unnecessary inclusion. The school is very crammed (and small) when it could've been slightly bigger with the provided space and though the stickers, and the grey squirrel are the pretty cool, for the price, this set is pretty underwhelming. The school bus isn't that good and could've been done better as a stand-alone set but I appreciate its wheelchair accommodation feature and it looks pretty charming. The kid's playground polybag combos with this set well so that 's certainly a plus.

  • @aidanquiett668

    Lego really overvalues their new roads, and they shouldnt be putting them in main sets. You frankly cant have a good building when most of the budget goes to extras like roads and an outdoor area. Even if the extras are super important, give them to us with add ons like a playground polybag/15 dollar set

    I feel going the Friends route of missing roofs (and in this case, a whole missing side wall) is a massive disappointment for LEGO City. It's great that the bus has wheelchair access, but absolutely baffling that there's no provision for extra minifigs to sit or stand if the wheelchair isn't there. I know when I was a kid the first thing I'd have done is see how many people I can fit into the bus, and that would be such a letdown.

    It’s interesting to see the disconnect between friends and city. For the friends theme we have sets 41682 and 41134, and honestly, this city set doesn’t even compare!! I want a big beefy LEGO city school! I love the road plate system, I like how it can be combined with other sets to make a ‘town plan’ style city, but I wish LEGO would have a regular town theme again. The friends line isn’t trying new things with road plates vs base plates, and that theme gets all the good builds. Maybe release a non-pink variant of some of those sets.

  • @beltz333
    @beltz333 2 роки тому +48

    I like this, but it would have been instantly made better by leaving out the bus and putting it in its own set where it could have been made bigger with kids and some other accessories. Then the parts count from taking out the bus could have been put into the school for more detail or slightly more room. Another good idea would have been using the Harry Potter classrooms idea. They could make different classes, cafeteria, gym, etc. Then have technic pins where they can connect to your school so you can build it however you want.

  • @parazels83

    Even when I was 6, I think I would’ve felt the same you did about the set. There’s just not a lot for a kid to do. I love the City theme and I’m glad it’s gone on so long, but I feel like in the past couple of years the buildings have become side builds in their own sets instead of the main focus. It’s like if all you got in a Monkie Kid “Monkey King Warrior Mech (80012)” set was the side building. They don’t need all the extra designed road space (even though I like the new road system); they can just use the floor as the road.

    Great review and agree with everything! Almost like the designer budget was chopped by 40-50 percent (due to having road plates forced included by Lego corporate). Feel bad for designers because you can clearly see passion on what was left of the design is awesome with so much love and detail! My theory is the they had a hand tied behind their back with the budget(road plates). Wish we could have saw what they would have done with the FULL budget. Purchased the set to hopefully support more school sets being built in the future. Love the content as always and appreciate that you are not sponsored! Jang the goat!!!!

  • @kentslocum

    I love the new roadplate system, but I agree that the focus of the set should have been on the school building. I also find it puzzling that not all new City sets fit within the road plate grid! Some have very awkward dimensions, making them incompatible with the road plates, unless significant retrofitting and remodeling is undertaken.

  • @Jimfoxyboy
    @Jimfoxyboy 2 роки тому +7

    The only other time I think Lego touched on school related theme, was in their Ideas book from 1980, (page 40-41). It was somewhat simple, as was almost all the sets back then. Just a single class room with desks and a side building of some sort. (also a suggestion of a build for a slide in one of the pictures) I find it interesting that it was one of the more rare and unusual design suggestions, in that the roof was partly opened, rather than the 'open back side' design.
    I'll give Lego kudos for diving into something new, again. Not surprising they may have had to struggle with it a bit. Perhaps we'll get to see some better stuff on this theme later on?

    Some nice elements, prints and ideas going on. But man road plates have really been killing city sets. I like road plates conceptually, and want Lego to design sets around their compatibility, but I’m hoping they stop giving us plates in sets and rely on people buying them as they need and see fit.

    I so much agree with you on this one. First of all: Here in Europe, in most countries school buses aren't really a thing. Maybe a regular taxi van, but nothing like this. So indeed, make that a separate set and make it (much) better. And spend the budget on the school itself and the playground around it, not on a bit of road. It should at least have enough space for all kids and a teacher to fit in. I feel it would already be a slight improvement if you would reconfigure this set so everything is on the ground floor, a lower but wider building would look more substantial. But as it is, this is just a bad joke....

    I also tend to forget it’s a 6+ city set so tax on $5.

    I think they could've taken out the road plates and sold the bus on its own like they've done for regular city buses so it could be longer and more of a bus so that the school could be double the size it is now. I think one other classroom for either a math or reading/writing class and a cafeteria would've been pretty good to have with the science and supposed art/band room in the lobby.

    The school bus is strange to me also because there’s no side door, so any time in lego universe a kid would need to enter the bus, the kid in the wheelchair would need to get out and then get back in to let the other kid in. Same goes for the driver if they ever need a break. I understand it’s not meant to be highly accurate but just seems odd to me

    I feel like JANG should be a lego designer lol. I agree with everything he says about any review that I watch. Lego has become over confident and sort of just throw different things out there that was not thought of correctly. I always loved the City line, and the new sets are great. I love the thought t into making sets that kids want, but they need more abilities for kids to interact with it. The school is still a great set, but like you said, it needed more to it. Quite disappointing. The music and art class should have been a seperate classroom module that you could stack on top or add to the side, leaving the entrance hall more as a reception area and lockers etc. Bus looks like a 4+ build, needs to be longer and fit more than two kids 😂. If this is a high school, kids should all have posable legs (like Hogwarts pupils) and keep the short short legs for even younger kids.
    Perhaps they're planning an additional set in the future with extra classes....

    My first thought was who needs a bus for a school with 2 students ? Then you showed us the 2-passenger bus. Poor child in wheelchair has no access to classroom. I would move classroom downstairs and put art/music room upstairs. This set needs add-ons and serious modification. Love the stickers, rock climb and hopscotch. If I purchased this I would sell resell the roadplates.
    My grandsons outgrew LEGO. Gramma, nearly 73, did not.

    Considering that millions of parents have been sold on the idea that LEGO is “educational” it’s hard to believe we’ve waited decades for a school and what we get is a complete disappointment.

    The best part of these videos is seeing whatever awesome gunpla Jang is working on in the background.
    EDIT: OH NO it's the 1/100 Gundam 00 kits...

    Ironically and apart from its size - a classroom with just 2 students and no roof or internet feels pretty realistic here in Berlin in 2022 😂
    Concerning the bus - my son would just do that - throw the kids in there and wouldn´t bother at all! Happy new year man

    Lego is definitely going in a great direction with adding real life places (grocery store, bank, school) but they still make some easily avoidable weird mistakes such as with the size of the school and school bus. In my opinion lego would sell so much more money and make the lego community way happier as a whole if they just went out and released a 150 - 250 dollar school minifgure scale play set. It could come with a decently sized bus and school with many seperate classrooms (not just 2) a lot of students of different ages and teachers. They don't even need to add base plates instead giving us a nice track field with hoops and sport equipment. The exterior could also be improved to look like actual schools. Just an idea I thought I could share. If I had the money and resources I'd create my own set and send it to ideas.

    American school bus AND a cycling path.
    Now I know this is definitely a fantasy school.

    Agreed! Being a school teacher myself, LEGO should have included a bigger school!! They could have had more rooms, resources/supplies for mini figs to use, a longer school bus to hold more mini figs, etc…it’s too bad, because we were looking forward to a school set in LEGO CITY. Maybe, next time.😕

    As always, a great review. Despite the cost, I still bought for my 6 year old daughter. She (we!) have a lot of recent City sets and this has by far and away provided the most play for her. Not my favourite, but she loves it.

    Great review. Agree on wanting more connecting tiles and fewer of those ramps. Those ramps are going to end up being like the curved train track pieces, I already have too many of them laying around. Need to figure an NPU for them, maybe SNOT them on some mountainside. In all seriousness, they could probably also lower the cost by putting in fewer of those ramps as they are a lot of plastic.

    i think this set should’ve been more at the capstone level of design/pricing, because i like the ideas and even some of the execution, but it needed just a bit more space to live up to what it could be

    Lego honestly could’ve made either a larger scale set or (as suggested by other comments) series of sets that work together. Make a full-size bus that can contain lots of passengers, make a building worthy of being called a school, have several playground and grounds sets, etc. One set just won’t cut it at this size

    I think some of the issues with this set could be solved by having *all* the kids come with the short, bendable legs

    Yes, a building without a roof and a partial wall certainly promotes outdoor activities.

    20:26 "Steal from other set" 😂 nice choice of word, that's what I usually do. Anyway you need the 2 extra yellow speed bump pieces, not the 2x4 grey tile plate.

    Here's what I would have done if I was Lego: Scrap this set and make it a series of sets instead. One for the bus, like you said. And then, I would make maybe three sets, each representing one class. A general class room, a science class room, an art class room at $20 each, and then two larger sets at maybe $30-40 for a gym and a cantine. Make those modules to build any combination of rooms into a larger building. And maybe even an outside area on two street plates for $20 again, with like a table tennis plate, that hopscotch, a fence, and some bike racks. Now that would make a great city school! And if it's a success, year two gets like a school garden and a teacher's room. I really wish Lego would embrace modularity more, especially with City.

    I think you are right on about separating the bus and the school into two sets. As one set, both elements seem to suffer from the strain of the parts budget.
