These are made by Oplast in Slovenia like all screwdrivers from Gedore (and Knipex, Hazet and others). They use the ratcheting mechanism from Rolgear and are being sold under a lot of brands: Hazet, Gedore, Inbus, Stier etc. Oplast themselves sell them as Kraftgrip SilentGear. And yes in Europe these retail around 15 euros without bits, 25/30 euros for the version with bit storage.
I have the Hazet one and love it. It has colors on the collar of the bits for distinction. (similar to some Wera bits)

Rolgear, a company from British Columbia, owns the patent of the silent gear mechanism.
They have licensed it to Oplast in Slovenia which makes this ratchet for Gedore, Hazet and others.
These are produced for various brands inclusing Gedore. Another variant is from Inbus which calls it the FlowDrive and has a different color scheme and comes with other, mostly hex bits.
Yes, they do sell for less than 20 euro in Europe, a little more for the ones with bit magazine. I got a good deal on the Gedore 2169-012 with bit magazine a while ago and love it. I use it around the house all the time. In Europe it seems there is more variety in screws. The large flathead is useful for many things, kids toys use philips, but in buildings it is mostly Pozidrive, and nowadays a lot of Torx so it is nice to have the bits in the handle.
I often use it where before I would get the cordless drill/driver out, with this screwdriver it is so fast, silent and effortless to put a screw in that I just do it by hand. Not having to adjust your grip every turn makes it so much faster to drive in a screw.
Been waiting for you to get to this. I bought one for work a week or so ago, it's quite remarkable as far as ratchets go. They are quite cheap in Europe, I paid about 15€. The actual bit holder is fine, not as precise a holder and not as strong a magnet, about average there.
In the locking middle position the mechanism can slip a little bit in either direction if wiggled back and forth, especially if the mechanism is worn. It won't do this when properly engaged left or right or when applying force.
Inside the handle there is a round tube, inside that round tube sits a hex shaft with three roller bearings on the flats and the cage (direction selector) keeping them in place and pushing them left or right depending in which direction they should engage. The rollers are then wedged between the hex and round tube when turning the screw and can roll back when "ratcheting". In the middle position there is some play left and right allowing the rollers some space to move around on the flat instead of binding up between tube and shaft. Engaged in either direction this is not the case. But of course there is always a tiny amount of slop in any mechanical system, so in effect this has some return arc, maybe 1° or so.
In the RolGear mechanism these rollers are very long, there is a lot more engagement than on any ratcheting screwdirver, making this very strong I'd assume.
When "ratcheting" there is no spring to overcome, theoretically there should be no contact between the handle and shaft at that point giving this mechanism zero backdrag. But of course there is some fricion from the bushings between shaft and handle, giving it a small amount of drag but less than a ratchet with a spring-loaded poll.
I've been pondering buying one of these for a while, so I'll probably jump on it now that Doc has given it the thumbs-up.

It is gearless, it's a clutch system. It's worth mentioning you can easily disassemble these for cleaning.

I’ve had this screwdriver for 3-4 (?) years, it’s a main screwdriver for me (at least until I buy 816 RA); things I don’t like: 1) the bulge at the tip - you need to have a thin long bit piece for deep fasteners; 2) the shaft (?) is too long for my liking - I’d rather have it like on the 816 RA where it’s short but with a longer bit you can make it long; 3) I left it in the car for a cold night and the day after it worked poorly (the oil froze or something), I needed to undo some interior screws and that was a bad surprise (had to use a 1/4 ratchet with a swivel head). Apart from that it’s perfect and a joy to work with; I do have a feeling “please be gentle” and I don’t like it (I guess it’s the way it is with fine mechanisms) so I’ll be ordering 816 RA and have two bitholders: Wera for cold situations/ abuse/ times when I need a long thin bit and Gedore for all other uses. I have a 6-bit holder back from a cheap ratcheting stubby and I have PZ1-2, PH1 and 2 slotted bits (PH2 is in my Gedore 99% of the time) and it works well (except for the times when I need a Torx or something).
It’s a great, nice thing to have especially if you like to feel “premium quality stuff” in your hands; wouldn’t recommend it as the only bitholder though.
P.S. ratcheting sounds after this seem so peasanty, annoying and unnecessary and the build quality is superb; kind of scared to find out that 816 RA is not so good as this one but there isn’t a perfect tool anyway (except for 8605180 pliers, they’re lifesavers, but it’s a different story)

In Europe if the shaft isn't 1/4 it's 6 mm. Wera's reversible blades are also 6 mm.
The one with 12 bits is pretty great, they pop out, that's very useable.
I love mine I have the one with the bit storage I’ve had it for couple of years and I’m a service tech so it gets used every day. I wanted the Hazet driver I like it because it’s shaft comes out and you can put it in your drill but no one had it.

Wonder if using a one way bearing could work kinda what you find in fishing reels. Some how the direction control move the bearing or something and then it allows for it to rotate the other direction. The "play" or thing you feel could be imperfections in the shaft catching the rollers in the one way bearing. Just wondering because one would need to wonder if this is what is being used , how much torque can they handle before letting go compared to traditional gears being used.
Isn't that what it is?? Seems like it's just a one way bearing and not "300 teeth" like he mentions. Same thing on electric start rc cars.
There’s a stubby Rolgear that is similarly ‘toothless’ but not multi-component.
I had a look on the rolgear website and couldn’t find the stubby. Have you seen it for sale anywhere?

Doc, you mean you don’t have an 15/64 spanner? Ha 😂! It is weird that they made the shaft such strange dimension. It would be interesting what calipers would say… 6.5mm? Love Gedore tools, but only have a few.

Hazet 810R is this screwdriver with 12 bit storage and locking bit driver instead of magnetic.
The only thing that bothers me is the selector ring is a bit small and shaft could be round with knurling like the LTT - hex is a bit weird to hold and I do not see the need for a wrench on racheting screwdriver. But for the price I am pleased with it.
The shaft / bits would be 6mm
PB Swiss actually made a gearless ratcheting screwdriver in the past, I don‘t have a clue why they discontinued it.
I was very lucky to get one on eBay some time back, and it is easily the best one in existence. In all three positions it doesn‘t have any play whatsoever.
Reminds me of me wanting to email PB Swiss about why in hell they aren‘t making it at the moment. Maybe cost?

Not liking my Gedore…feels like you need to get the right gear for the ratchet to work exactly how you want…lock position got a big play or slop and sometimes doesn’t engage properly to lock position too….nice that doesn’t make a noise though.

These are the lowest backdrag screwdrivers on the market. Most ratcheting screwdrivers aren't that useful with the high backdrag, different story here. Id probably get the Hazet version with bit storage.

I emailed RolGear asking about how many companies they were making custom drivers for, other than Hazat, Gedore, and MegaPro, and the VP replied with a SUPER defensive email because he thought I was some competitor.
I'm still hoping the next colab is a straight driver with the MegaPro bit carousel.
