What does it mean to be a citizen of the world? | Hugh Evans

  • Hugh Evans started a movement that mobilizes "global citizens," people who self-identify first and foremost not as members of a state, nation or tribe but as members of the human race. In this uplifting and personal talk, learn more about how this new understanding of our place in the world is galvanizing people to take action in the fights against extreme poverty, climate change, gender inequality and more. "These are ultimately global issues," Evans says, "and they can ultimately only be solved by global citizens demanding global solutions from their leaders."

"finding and activating global citizens" can have HUGE bang for your buck. Some people are just phenomenal at identifying and fulfilling needs. I met a guy in Dowlaiswaram India who has started a high quality school for kids that can't afford to go to private schools, a sewing school for widows (who would otherwise have to beg), and even a hospital for the local poor!
He was able to start with his own finances, but people partnering with him has greatly increased his impact on the community for relatively small amounts of money. He's also acted as a base for more intensive medical teams to come and alleviate the suffering beyond what his hospital can handle. In this way, he allows for partnerships of both money AND time.
If you want to help without corruption taking a piece, such people are fine recipients for resources.

I know raising my daughter, I instilled in her values, respect, and courage. When possible help someone along the way, if u can not say anything good about someone, say nothing at all. Know what you are advertising.....as one does knowing or not. Anything of Value, is costly as it is Rare. Freedom is that but choose wisely, as some decisions, can be deadly. Encouraged her to be a leader, set example. Never treat or look down on another, as it does not Dictate your Worth, but the opposite. Choose your cross wisely. It is true, why buy the Cow if the Milk is Free. Like a guy said to me, "People could care less about how or what you know, untill they know how Much you Care" So True. Care as Love is a Verb tense, if it is REAL.

Hugh Evans and Global Citizens have already achieved a lot. That's awesome. They do much for people far away, nur they are often unable to protect the people who attend their festivals. In Hamburg in 2017 People were mugged and attacked by the rioters who has come for the G-20 summit. In New York in 2018 a barrier fell and panic broke out. Hundreds lost their belongings, hundreds were severely injured. In Johsnnesburg in December last year festival goers after the venue were attacked, robbed, mugged, injured, some are still in hospital. What will happen in Berlin next week with the festival taking place near the Potsdamer Platz?
In all these cases 'Global Citizen' didn't react. Concert goers are just not interesting for them.

Global Citizenship is a term to mean citizenship of the human race, not one global government. The examples of someone collecting pennies for a cause demonstrates how everyone can do something for the good of humankind, be it locally or for a foreign country. I understand the reality of situations beyond the normal citizen's control and I understand that despite what seems beyond one person's reach can be influenced by collective voices. Miracles don't happen overnight with one person's voice but your voice has educated me. That is global citizenship. An example is a recent video of a little boy becoming suicidal after being bullied at school and someone offered him a trip to Disneyland. Though the trip might not be the long term solution to bullying, that video impacted someone from across the Pacific to care enough to do something to show the little boy that he matters. That is Global Citizenship, not one global govt. Thanks for sharing.

I was moved by his fundamental speech and I couldn’t agree more it; Activism is the most important element of global citizen.
Because politicians get selected by in their area, which is they have been lived, sadly Philippines’ politicians don’t care about their server poverty and human rights due to corruptions. In his speech, one thing that you should know thing is don’t stop learning and participates.
Malala shows that how she achieved her human rights, which she didn’t use to be allowed by her ascribed traits.
And this speech reminds me the gratitude to some countries, throughout few decades age korea faced tough times and got helps from many countries. The Butterfly effect can cause the change of good effects to be better lives all over the world.

Yes, Lenin was a communist but he died before communism could be properly implemented and his successor, Stalin (who Lenin had warned his government against in his will, but Stalin destroyed it) was most certainly no communist, despite what you learned from American Cold War propaganda 😂 all these other 'communist' societies are actually 'Stalinist' which I think we can all agree is not a good thing...so yeah, you can't say something has failed if it's never been given the chance to succeed. Nice talk, I agree with the Idea of global citizens, I believe we are all neighbors despite of the boarders, oceans and mountains between us, despite our differences in culture, language, religion, and color.
We should help each other as neighbors, we should create the global society were we all be united not by one political country but by one single belief that we are all one family.
I know it sounds idealistic and maybe impossible for some people but we owe it to ourselves to try and to influence other to try too.

Measure not by money spent but by concrete goals achieved.
Increasing spending means little if the vast majority of the aid money is stolen by the autocrats that run nearly all developing countries. Focusing only on spending creates a bottomless pit to throw money in, serves the people most part of the problem, and creates donor fatigue.
Get into the specifics. Don't just hold wealthy nation accountable for making help available, hold developing nations accountable for what is done with the help.

Well said. I guesss the politicians and the govt officials in each dept in each country, once they come in power, think of themselves rather than thinking for people even in local. Forget about the globals. We as a people, need to change their mindset that if they work and contribute globally, they will make the future secure of their own forthcoming siblings in each way. It's difficult but not impossible. There are people who are willing to help each one in their possible way but the responsible authorities have made their lifes so difficult that at times even people find time seldomly to contribute to such issues. This whole cycle may turn and change only if we do not give up. Thanks for sharing this video. :)

I still don't understand why most people aren't able to see the bigger picture, how they separate themselves with each other on basis of things that are letting humanity down since the very start of our existence. How they lead themselves to be brain-washed by norms of society, religion, etc. without even putting thought to it. In the talk, Mr. Evans said that he is ready to take 'no' for an answer, but sometimes I wonder where that mass no will lead us in future, if the picture remains the same as of today.

The talk was powerfull BUT! It is from the perspective of rich West, that has money to spend and relatively easy existence. I am from Ukraine, and I believe in serving local community first. How can I see my people suffering, but serve the others? Besides, you are equipped with knowledge and understanding to do the best for the situation in your country.

I know some NGO's here that keep doing some great work against the poverty, but it's still not enough. It would be nice to have internacional help in some case, you know? One of the biggest reasons -- if not THE biggest -- of poverty and injustice in this world today is the fractional-reserve lending system of the Central Bankers. We're all prisoners of DEBT to our owners who create money out of thin air and then charge interest for it. The interest money is never created or put into the money supply. This guarantees foreclosures, bankruptcies, and perpetual debt and enslavement. Please, Hugh... start talking about the Central Bankers.

I believe that dismantling nation states won't liberate humanity, on the contrary. I believe that once there are no more competitive powers at play all political power will be centralized to a global elite. We have to accept that forcing everyone to get along at gun point is probably worse than having to mind each other's business

Yes, I also agree that people need to be compassionate about everyone including the others from a far side of the world. But, why do we have to get rid of races, nationalities, and cultures to achieve that? Whether those changes are positive or negative, the variation in the world's cultural ideas and values is the factor that drives many changes on this planet to occur, not the other way of merging everyone's varying interests and values into a single global citizenship.
