It happens, I’ve been driving different machines for the past 7 years and 2 days ago I just dropped a Yamaha xmax because of elbow tendinitis LOL. Never saw it coming, my arm wasn’t hurting until from one second to the next, I just couldn’t hold it. Luckily It’s not too heavy so I was able to drop it gently, but still, it’s embarrasing to drop a scooter. However, dropping a two wheeled vehicle is something meant to happen at some point, wether out of inexperience, distraction, or injury. Shit happens, and it’s great to be prepared for when it does. I’m thankful for this kind of content.

adrenaline will also make lifting easier than you can think guys. lifting it properly as Daniel shows isnt just to make it easy, but to prevent injuries. in the moment youre going to feel like you're lifting a bicycle instead of a 600# machine. the TSM that cuts the fuse can pop a fuse so if she refuses to start use one of your extras in the fuse box to replace your starter fuse and you should be good to go save for any major damage

    • @ritwikreddy5670
      @ritwikreddy5670 3 роки тому +1

Exactly, due to adrenaline, you may be able to lift your bike even with the jankiest technique possible, the difference is the injuries in the process.

  • @OutnBacker

I use what has been called the BMW method. He was close, but before I lift by the bars, I turn the front to the sky and clamp the front brake with a glove slipped over or anything that can clamp the brake lever. Then, stand in close grab the throttle end with BOTH hands and just raise the bike. You don't need to handle the left bar end at all with the front brake clamped. Pretty easy on the back, which I have to guard all the time.

This happened to me in the first few weeks of riding at a stop light like you explained. I jumped off and threw that bike up so fast because I was super embarrassed and full of adrenaline. Afterward I could feel the muscles I just abused and it sucked. It's good to think about what you are going to do, have a picture in your mind of your bike falling over before it happens so at least you'll be mentally prepared and understand it's not a huge deal even if you do cosmetic damage to the bike. You'll live. Some lady stopped to see if I was ok too lol but I was already sitting on the bike again.

One thing I'll add from personal experience is once your bike is up let it idle for about a minute first. If you really have to get off the road, keep the revs low whilst doing so.
The oil in your sump will be all over the place and may even give you an oil warning light.

I've used that first technique several times. Usually on bikes like Goldwings. A Goldwing is a super simple bike to lift even though it weighs around 900 lb. It's also probably the best way for a woman to lift a bike as we don't have the same upper body strength. A friend of mine flipped over her Vulcan and wasn't sure how to pick the bike up so I had to teach her on that one as well. It's pretty exciting that I knew how to do it. -Sarafyna

    Hi Dan
Thanks for this. I was riding for a decade since 18 thru college. Now I am 57, 165 lb..pretty good shape, and decided to start riding again. I "picked up" a 1982 750 Sabre. I managed to go into the ditch on its left hand side only a couple days after getting it and "picking it up" was almost impossible for me..these methods just didn`t seem to work. Ended up using a 6 ft steel bar in the front engine guard on the right "to the sky" side to pry it back up. Decided I would just practice slow speed maneuvers on the lawn around my place and of course, slipped on the grass and over it went again. Tried again and still no luck. My son in law was here and a pretty strong guy and even he had no luck with these methods. Out came that bar again..and took 2 of us to get it past the pivot point. I used to ride a 79 550 Suzuki and had no problem picking it up the multiple times it dropped. This bike is heavier but I didn`t think THAT much..Now I am nervous that if I drop it , I will not be able to pick it up...which will REALLY crush my ego. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? I am going to go to the gym and try that old tractor tire for practice. BTW, the bike was on its right hand side so long on the lawn that it looks like I ended up with air in the front brakes. Might be a good idea as a pick up check to make sure you still have brakes or anything else hydraulic.

Grateful for the video. I was riding in soggy grass, practicing my slow speed maneuvers and spilled my Shadow Aero. Of course there was nobody around to help, so I searched your site. ( been a subscriber for a few months now) Anyway, after watching how easily you picked your bike up, I tried to replicate the move. No luck. I couldn't get any traction on the wet grass, and I soon exhausted myself...but I improvised by rapping a strap around the middle and hooking it to my pickup. I drove the truck slowly forward and the bike started coming up. Once it was up a little, again I tried this maneuver, but I still couldn't budge it, so I jumped back I. the truck for a little more oomph. After a bit I noticed the bike was starting to slide, not right itself, so I found an old pipe, and I hammered it into the soft ground to act as a barrier at the rear tire, and drove forward a little more. It worked,a and I was able to get on and start it up to ride it back to the driveway. Thankfully the ground was so soft, there wasn't a dent or scratch on it, just some mud that brushed off easily enough.
I can't help but wonder if I were to drop it again on the road, if I would be able to pick it up if I could get good traction.
Also, I noticed some fuel dripping out of a hose after I finally got it up. I that normal?
Again, thanks a bunch for the video!

Come here because I just dropped my first bike :) Stopping in the middle of the rain and not wearing the proper boot since i just got back from work and decided to do a little riding around the city, so it super slippery, put my left foot down and boom, I dropped my bike xD Luckily there's some pedestrians helped me to pick it up since I'm struggling not knowing the proper technique, totally embarrassed haha, thanks for sharing this technique!

I know this is an old video but I just want to say thank you sir. I just dropped my new bike backing it out of the garage and no matter how hard I struggled I could not get it up until I frantically found your video. I still struggled, but after watching I was eventually able to get it up myself.

Thanks dan. Believe or not but ive been riding for years and never had to deal with my bike falling... I just moved up to a heavier bike recently and the first thing i do is stall it on a sharp turn and almost immediately fell over. I was scared and extremely nervous on how to pick it up and two older gentlemen asked if i needed help and lucky me. Anyways thanks for this tutorial was very helpful and i will be practicing this way lol.

I rode a motorcycle for the FIRST TIME yesterday in a safety course. I dropped the bike TWICE and felt so embarrassed. No one else dropped the bike, just me! Although I had help to pick it up, I kept thinking to myself, "what if I don't have help the next time?" My fear is that I'm too small. This video has given me a little more confidence in picking up a bike. Thanks for sharing it!

Good to know. I dropped my last bike on a road tour. I had way too much packed on the bike and I pulled over into a rest stop. My foot went into a small hole and took me past the balance point. Down she goes. I had to unstrap all the gear before i could get it up. That night in the campground I actually threw out a bunch of gear to lighten my load. Broke my heart but made the rest of the trip MUCH safer.

I watched this before a week of getting my bike and today on my way to college I stopped at a red light and went to put my feet down but my shoelace had got caught on the back brake so it fell and my front brake lever bent and mirror came of, but this video saved me the embarrassment of not being able to pick my bike up properly. And for everyone reading this tuck your shoelaces in before riding if your wearing trainers please aha.

I am a brand new Rider, I recently got a bike, the only problem is it's an Yamaha fjr1300. I did not know how heavy that bike was until I sat on it and began rolling it back and forth. This was very intimidating and since I've had it, I have dropped it at least three times. Thank goodness I wasn't in motion at the time of the event but I was able to pick up the bike using back method. This was much easier for me as I was able to use the power of my legs and my back to recover this 600-lb, or so, bike. I'm glad that was a valid method for picking up a bike. I'm definitely not a guy who works out in the closest thing I get to exercise is recreational biking. I know I'll probably drop it one or two more times before I am an expert at keeping it up right.

Really helpful I don’t believe I did a full drop but came close due to surprise of the weight at a stop. It happened on the opposite side. So quick I literally never let go of the handles. Kinda like a catch and pickup. No damage to bike but your video definitely showed me a better way and less chance of hurting my back

Just had my fourth lesson this morning. Finally managed to do controlled braking from 50mph/70kmh and felt on top of the world. Then as the lesson ends I drop the bike when parking by having the handlebars turned and using the front brake.
And the thing is I know not to do that but it’s not in the muscle memory yet snd I wasn’t thinking.
Heavy BMW GS F750. Not the biggest bike but big to me!

I've tried the first method with my bike, It being 450lbs roughly, and I had no luck picking it up myself, wish I had done it the 2nd way as it was close to the curb and I couldn't get proper leverage with the 1st method. My neighbor was close by thankfully and helped me with it. It was my 2nd day of owning the bike, and the engine guard pretty much paid for itself =)

Backed out of a spot, road dipped further than I thought and misplaced my foot and laid the bike, broke my front brake lever in front of a handful of people, had a few laughs from the lookers, luckily a friend was there and helped me pick the bike up, most embarrassing thing ever, especially after riding dirt bikes for 10+ years 😅

Thank you sir. I lifted mine by the bars as the second demonstration here. But the first one seems waaay better for you body. Luckily I also deadlift so not only do I have atleast alittle muscle to lift the bike, but more importantly I know not to lift with my back. also the bike is just 400cc's so its not too heavy.

I have a 09" Electra Glide Classic, I've dropped it on a ramp with a high incline coming out of a garage. My highway bars really came in handy. The second technique I hand to use to get her up. It was much easier.✌

Incline is where i tipped mine . Had to lift alone and push up on a hill after it stalled and handlebars turned. I jumped off when it died but i couldnt hold it up to push it. 300 pounds up hill...i am 126 pounds and back is sore from that. Glad it was just a 250cc

I know it's in gear (I hadn't even thought of that, so thanks!), but that still gives it a little freedom to roll. Wouldn't it be both safer and easier to hold the break while lifting?

Nice video! Don't forget, you also need to "drop" your bike safely during practice, e.g. with the same steps, only in reverse. If you lower it with a side twist, you could hurt your back.

Lol all the times I’ve dropped my bike has been in my driveway coming out of the garage. I found the squat and lift easiest to do; was even able to pick up my ultra glide deluxe, which surprised the hell out of me.
