Inflatables need to be adjusted for user and take a bit more setting up. For general use emergency ones stored in cabin best use foam ones, easier to fit and adjust in an emergency.

The cartridge (CO2 bottle) on a inflatable PFD does not have an expiration date. The bobbin does have an expiration printed on it. If the bobbin has expired a new one should be replaced immediately to ensure proper operation. You usually have 3 years of service on a bobbin if it just came from the manufacturer. Don't buy a bobbin at Joe's bait and tackle where it's been on the shelf for 2 years. Before you buy, look at the expiration date. That said, the cartridge should be replaced at the bobbin expiration also. I place my old unused cartridge in the pocket of my PFD in case it's needed.
