I am billy testing at a chemistry lab at Duke due to my neighbor that we are friends is being the chem. Professor at Duke, and also taking science high school classes during summer at Duke. I am a sophomore with a 4.0 u der with gpa from freshman year but a 4.3 weighted, but that is only freshman year. Is this good enough for competitive colleges?

That’s just about enough to get into a good sixth form. I’m also in the UK and HPQ, Duke of Edinburgh and Jack Petchy are not special or unique awards by anyone’s standards. As you get older you’ll gain more experience, focus on volounteering, getting all grade 8 and 9’s and good A-levels. School will only get harder from here so keep doing what your doing but do things that aren’t offered by every UK schools currriculum like the awards you’ve mentioned since they’re a bit mediocre.
Harvard is the best school in the world. A Duke of Edinburgh bronze won’t get you in. I’m sorry to burst your bubble but the truth hurts. You don’t need intelligence or skill to gain one. At least aim for a Duke of Edinburgh gold. And the HPQ is a GCSE equivalent qualification, not a SAT or ACT equivalent. You’ll need a lot more, focus on what those skills show you and the skills your desired Graduate course requires. Also bare in mind that Harvard is 75k dollars a year and there is no student loan offered by the Goverment. Unlike in the UK where Oxford and Cambridge are just 9k a year and you don’t have to pay it back until you earn above a certain threshold. Also health insurance, citizenship and others are all stuff to consider. American uni courses are also 4 years compared to 3 in the UK.

Hi! I have a question… I am a international student (living in Sweden). I recently took the SAT and I got a 1570 and I have a 4.0 GPA (unweighted) and a 4.7 (weighted). I play elite soccer (My team is on top 25 in the country) I have to personal awards (best player on the team and fighter of the year). Another thing I love is playing guitar. I have played in internationally music competitions and have performed in Poland and Finland on professional scenes. I have also participated in the national science fair and got to the final with an got 2000$ (but I didn’t got first) Last I have participated in the Nordic Mathematical Olympiad (because I did well in the national rounds) and I was ranked top 10 national best in code-problem solving Do you think I can get into Harvard (or other prestigious colleges?)
Focus on your English proficiency skills both spoken and written And Hone your maths making process which is a little bit different from our Indian system so .... That's what I think for 7 and 8 class

7th and 8th grade is the best time to explore more extracurriculars and activities so that in high school you can narrow it down to just a few activities that you are proficient in. However, make sure that extracurriculars dont take away from your learning, and try your best to be a top student before entering the much more competitive high school.

(International student) This is most of what I’ve done so far: - Coauthored a research paper in pure mathematics - Acknowledged in a research paper similar to the aforementioned one for many contributions to the results - Solved 5 IBM ponder this challenges (might have solved more by the time I apply) - I have a few records in a certain field of math (there is a site listing them that I can reference; one of Harvard’s own pure maths professors are also listed there for many similar records, though not sure if they’ll notice/if it would help) - Self learned all of the math/computer science that was required for all the previous ECs I listed, I also self learned a lot of concepts in advanced physics as a hobby but don’t have any reference to provide for that Please let me know what else I can do to maximize my chances for Harvard/Stanford/MIT. @@hitshot first of all, congratulations on whatever you have achieved so far. You have really great shot I'd say. For the research projects you did/acknowledged, just make sure you state who you worked under, any professor of any uni or something like that. You can also describe your research in 2 or more lines in the additional info section. I don't have much idea about the IBM challenges so won't be able to provide any solid info. I think the report listing on the website you mentioned is something that can also be added in the "awards" section. You weren't really specific so I assume it's like a title or some sort of certification. For the things you self learned, i highly suggest you mention the courses you took or link the sources you learned everything from. Lastly, idk when you will be applying haha so if you have time, keep refining your portfolio by gaining some more hands-on experience using the knowledge you have acquired by venturing outside the school curriculum. Even the smallest of things like tutoring students or continuing taking part in competitions/Olympiads and acing them, hold a lot of weightage. Perhaps utilise your programming skills too? Anything to show that you are willing to make a difference in your community. I believe you intend to do a math major, yet you can pursue other things to show you have the potential or the transferable skills to study math at that college. Nurturing soft skills also might make up for anything your application lacks in. Lastly, please make sure you portray your passion by describing your extracurriculars and why you ended up doing them in your supplemental essays. You clearly seem qualified so while writing the essays, you have to show that your interests are genuine and not just for the sake of college applications.... Maybe connect your interest in math to some cause that was significant to you and then how you worked for it using math, anything like that to make it meaningful. At the end of the day, all this are mere suggestions and am in the same race as you. You are obviously are wayy more qualified than I could ever be lol so just go with the flow and keep growing. You need to curate a story on why you are different from the rest of the students who are getting the same grades as you. What makes you unique? You got to put some emotion into the person who will read your statement. Make them laugh, make them cry, something that will make you memorable. Imagine in their shoes, they read countless essays. It gets so boring when the same essays are being read, different people but same stories “Straight A student, 4.0 GPA” etc.
Nope. A 86 or 93 can't help you at all, you should atleast have a 4.0 gpa(with your percentage you are just at 3.7-3.9) and also your marks can't help you to get into Harvard at all, you need to be good at extra-curricular activities.

yes we can directly apply after 12th but you need to take in consideration the course you wanna do because there system is very different for certain courses.

I think the report listing on the website you mentioned is something that can also be added in the "awards" section. You weren't really specific so I assume it's like a title or some sort of certification.
For the things you self learned, i highly suggest you mention the courses you took or link the sources you learned everything from. Lastly, idk when you will be applying haha so if you have time, keep refining your portfolio by gaining some more hands-on experience using the knowledge you have acquired by venturing outside the school curriculum.
Even the smallest of things like tutoring students or continuing taking part in competitions/Olympiads and acing them, hold a lot of weightage. Perhaps utilise your programming skills too? Anything to show that you are willing to make a difference in your community. I believe you intend to do a math major, yet you can pursue other things to show you have the potential or the transferable skills to study math at that college. Nurturing soft skills also might make up for anything your application lacks in.
Lastly, please make sure you portray your passion by describing your extracurriculars and why you ended up doing them in your supplemental essays. You clearly seem qualified so while writing the essays, you have to show that your interests are genuine and not just for the sake of college applications.... Maybe connect your interest in math to some cause that was significant to you and then how you worked for it using math, anything like that to make it meaningful.
At the end of the day, all this are mere suggestions and am in the same race as you. You are obviously are wayy more qualified than I could ever be lol so just go with the flow and keep growing. Hope it helps! And wishing you the best of luck.

Tbh grades above 85 will do the work but you need a lot of good extra curriculars cos they matter the most
You need to curate a story on why you are different from the rest of the students who are getting the same grades as you. What makes you unique? You got to put some emotion into the person who will read your statement. Make them laugh, make them cry, something that will make you memorable. Imagine in their shoes, they read countless essays. It gets so boring when the same essays are being read, different people but same stories “Straight A student, 4.0 GPA” etc.
Nope. A 86 or 93 can't help you at all, you should atleast have a 4.0 gpa(with your percentage you are just at 3.7-3.9) and also your marks can't help you to get into Harvard at all, you need to be good at extra-curricular activities.

yes we can directly apply after 12th but you need to take in consideration the course you wanna do because there system is very different for certain courses.
