Respect to you buddy!! Finally, someone who knows how to weld a crack.. so nice to see your good looking welds. Not so easy upside down, changing to vertical then upside down again. Oh.. just got to 10 mins and you said you had your friend do that welding.. never mind.. Quality video!!
Well done. Much respect for you to tackle this job. Had mine done by my mechanic. Finally decided this past year to move on from the E46 M3 for road track purposes. A lot of people are coming back saying they still are getting cracks in subframe mount points even after doing this update. That you need to reinforce the top half by connecting the mount points and reduce twisting. Mason bar and some other solutions available. I decided to move on as it’s just too much of a hassle to sort this car out for track duty. They’re still awesome cars.
You could also look into the Vince bar from Vince Philstrom in Sweden. Stealthy install and redistribute the subframe load to more reinforced areas of the chassis. Nice work. I'm going to do this in the off season, won't have enough time to do this despite having all the parts.
Good on ya brother! I had my rear subframe reinforced at an indy shop because it was just too daunting to try and tackle myself. The one thing that I wish I had added at that time was upgrading to adjustable rear camber arms. It would have been so much easier & cheaper than having to go back in after the fact to get that done. I did replace the RTAB too, so next I'm on to bullet proofing the VANOS system. Glad you're back posting again!
How much did it cost to have a shop do it if you don't mind me asking. I had a local shop quote me several thousand dollars. I can't imagine what the dealership would charge
You did well getting the whole subframe assembly removed in one hit. This is inspiration to get my black m3 done now. This’ll be the 3rd e46 rear end in bits for me. I love a challenge 😂. Really well done Dude👌🏻
Really like ur channel. Nice M3. I’ve just finished doing this to mine, made exactly the same mistakes/errors of judgement, that u did. Took me forever to get the rear end bolted back onto the car. WTF were we thinking trying to bolt the whole rear end back on. But we learn by our mistakes, I bet you won’t do it that way again and ur pain isn’t in vain if somebody watches this and does it the easy way. Shugs.
I take my hat off to you, subframe is a lot of work on any car. E46 is definitely one of the time consuming car subframe to do. I got lucky when I bought my car, my good friend from Boostlogic in Austin Texas did my subframe and every single bushing in the rear of my M3. Then shipped my car to me
Great video and fantastic tips, I myself have a e46 m3 and have done for many years, on visual inspection no cracks but who knows what lies underneath, Reddish motorsport here in the uk specialise in the subframe reinforcements so one day will no doubt visit them, this is way beyond my skill level what you just done. Fantastic to watch. 🏴👏🏻❤️
Thanks! I did a visual inspection on mine a while ago and couldn’t see anything either. So like you said, who knows what lies beneath. Thanks for watching!
Nino Brown out of curiosity, how do you add primer before you weld something? Wouldn’t the weld burn off any primer? Wouldn’t you put any rust protection after the welds? I’ve never welded a car before so I’m asking.
@@logicsfinest3471 there are special types of primer for this - it will burn through it as it has to. But it will secure the metal around it. Google about these primers
O yes absolutly delighted you are back after your hiatus . Fantastic work on the m3 . Youll love it mine is very similar but with true rears and polybushs . Youll be addicted to driving again:)
@@BlackFlagged I've got 80k miles on mine and it's in way worse shape. Visible cracks from the spot wolds around the sub-frame mounting points and a big one travelling up the fold in the floor panel. I think after the CSL in 2003 the changed some of the spot welds, or added more, because cars from 03 onward seem to be more solid.
You are doing amazing job, just wanted to tell you...i hope you will do more videos, i do my m3 as well by myself and i need people like you to show me what to do and how to do so thx and hope you are doing well ..peace
Mate that is a very very nice e46. Exactly like mine except mine had same silver wheels. Was totalled in a head-on. Very sad. Good job. Absolutely love the car

You might just be the best E46 M3 channel on UA-cam! Keep up the great work. People like me appreciate you videos.
That's my next big job on my E90. Get a spare subframe, derust it, paint it, then remove everything, replace ALL bushings, do some rustproofing on the underside, put it all back together. Can't say I'm looking forward to it but it has to be done.
What was the reason of removing one layer of metal (the 3 drilled holes in trunk and cut the top layer out) just to weld it again? Was there anything added there?
Brooo Great Job I think this is one of your best Videos yet and definitely one of the best videos showing how to do this job on your own. I might take on this challenge as well on mines!!
Dude you’re videos are awesome attention to details is awesome I’m doing a pretty insane E30’s build now located in south Florida as well hope to run into you sometime would love to see the car
Can do it as it’s my daily but I had my Indy shop do it. Now I am having high engine noise faults on the BMW computer so I am thinking it’s the rod bearings.
This is the one i ended up using for everything except the diff mounts: 8MILELAKE 23 Piece FWD Front... www.amazon.com/dp/B016W4LHZ4?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share The one I used for the diff mounts is just one I rented from the auto parts store before I bought the one above
How easy it is when you have a lift and don't have to crawl under your car on porous asphalt without a creeper, with 1' 1/2 of clearance and remove the subframe of an e46 at 35°C, piece by piece... So yeah, I did what you did, but in far faaar worse conditions than you faced. It was tough, but not super hard Appreciate what you have, cause it can always be worse
The differential install is incorrect and possibly what attributed to the front bolt stripping. The front bolt and two rear bolts should be threaded hand tight and then the front bolt is to be torqued first (correct torque spec is 148 ft/lb) followed by the two rear bolts (correct tightening sequence is 15 ft/lb followed by a 90* angle torque).
Dude, you have sparks flying everywhere inside the car during your welding and grinding !! Why didn't you cover the upholstery ? I bet there's burn holes everywhere now..
Hate to say this, but plating is not enough. The only certain way to do this, is to tie the subframe mounts into the chassis legs. The plates only move the stress to other places that will fail.
good video but there's a reason BMW put somewhat squishy bushes and not solid as a rock Acetyl in there and reinforcing the body is good, but only shifts the problem to the next weakest point on an already marginal body design. the English boys - Beamish do loads of videos on the topic. a little anal yes but thorough. your style is great and a very informative easy to follow format.
The production quality of this video exceeds all other subframe videos. Future people who need this diy will continue to thank you.

Just so you know man thanks for the motivation I build my e 46 alone and to see someone else doing more then me alone goes along way good work man

I love this video, I think it’ll help when I come to do this next summer, I’m still buying all the parts slowly
It'll rust under the welds, should've coated the car with weld through primer before adding the reinforcement parts.
Nino Brown yea, if you used the car as a submarine I'd probably say you're right.

This is such a common issue on e46 m3's why hasn't it ever been part of a recall?
Because Bmw as a brand is shit
