Thanks, this video has eased my mind on shot placement, easy to understand and very informative. I'm going on my 1st hunt tomorrow morning, hopefully I can utilize what I learned here n get my 1st deer
I think this is the best explanation of where to aim that I have seen. Now it makes sense to me how to aim low for bow hunting, and why. Also, it's helpful how you said for gun to aim for the far leg for quartering away shots. That point of reference is what I needed. And thanks for the tip about sharpening the broadheads so that they're like scalpels! Your territory is like mine in NW Arkansas, except mine is even more steep with no flat ground to speak of where I hunt in a 70 acre drainage. it's really hard for me to sneak in, and there's not much browse besides acorns.
I've implemented several of your deer hunting lessons over the years and it has greatly improved my encounter and harvest rate. Thank you guys for the great videos and good luck this season.
I am 22 and going out this weekend to hunt for the first time in 10 years. Always went with my dad when I was younger but never killed a deer. This video was very helpful.
I've never been hunting before, but I'm going to finally go next year. I'm trying to absorb any, and all information I can get. This is a great video, very well presented and explained.
I’m about to sign up for a lease but I feel it’s to late so this year is just going to be prep and be ready for the following year!!! Might just go with a tree stand and hope for the best...
It amazes me how fast the deer drop on an archery shot. I was taught to aim low behind the shoulder with archery. This video demonstrated why. I never saw a deer drop like that because it's so fast. Thank you very much.
Thank you SO much! My FIL recommended me on finding videos to help me prepare for bow hunting. Your video was so informal on where to aim. I got my first deer yesterday- doe and had a great shot!! Nicked the heart, hit the lungs & was less than 20 yards away from where she was hit. Have a blessed day!
I am pretty new to bow hunting and this was extremely helpful. I am so thankful for what you said at the end about knowing The Creator and seeking His will. Thank You
This is the best video I've seen on shot placement, especially regarding quartering shots and deer dropping before the arrow arrives. All hunters should watch this no matter how experienced. 👍
This video was absolutely SUPERB! It was informative and educational and left no questions unanswered. Could not have asked for anything more. Excellent!

I love the double lung shot. I got an 8 pt. last year ,hit both lungs with the grim reaper broadheads. He ran 25 yards, stood a few seconds and fell over. I played video back an total time from shot to his passing was 56 seconds. You take out both airbags they don't go far.👍
@@GrowingDeerTV Thank you so much! I have a great understanding of the deer anatomy, which I think will be super helpful. We’ll see. But regardless, I’m going to continue watching your videos!!! Thanks again! 😀
I shot a big buck five years ago with a crossbow that dropped enough when he heard the crossbow unload that I thought I had missed or injured. I did find blood, but not much. We couldn't find it that night and went back the next morning. We found it around 200 yards away. It had the broadhead stuck in it's spine with a two inch hole around it. That's how much the deer dropped when it heard me shoot! It was a beautiful 5 x 4 around 180lbs which is a big deer for where I live. Thanks for the video! It answered some questions for me!

The off front leg line up is pretty brilliant... I always "aim for the exit hole" with a gun but its always a bit of a guess... I never consciously thought about looking for the front leg on the side away from me
I was hunting with my dad and uncle long ago. I was on a hill and was told to watch over my uncle, just to make sure nothing sneaks up on him. The brush was thick around him but I could still see him just fine. About 30 yards + - from him a buck came out of no where, they see each other about the same time. I keep watching and the buck does this charge at him but stops shortly after, kind of like stomping with the front legs. I just see my uncle raise his 30-30 and shoots right under the eye, pink mist all over, it happened so fast. It looked like somebody threw pink and silver glitter in the air. He used to be in the army as a ranger and watching him in action was amazing. It really happens so fast that if I would have blinked, I would have missed it.
Excellent advice for those that aren't confident when they pull the trigger. Personally i prefer the base of the neck ⅔-¾ up vertically. They drop without a single step every time. I dont pull the trigger unless I know i have the shot though, not everyone has the same patience. I also use .308 at close range so if i miss my preferred spot it still is only a couple inches off at most and drops in place. Great video with great explanations and demonstrations. Ill definitely share this with new hunters.
This is my first year hunting and this helped alot. Learning what I learned this weekend and this video I want to thank you for putting this presentation together.
yes im going hunting again this weekend and reminding myself where to shoot (its the youth hunt) and im ready im hunting with a gun for the first time so hopefully i get one.
This is excellent content. Very informative. This video has definitely helped many people bag a deer. And probably saved a few deer from a needlessly gruesome death. I’m definitely gonna watch this one a year from now on.
Aim broadside shoulder. Yuppers, thats what I do. Very humane and doesnt tear up the meat or trophy. You get the shoulder, the lung, the heart, the other lung, and perhaps even the other shoulder and some spinal shock. Makes for a nice pop and a quick drop. If you cant get a good shot, don't take the shot. My pa always told me its best to sometimes let a deer walk. Its better to have em walk then to have a bad hit on a deer that causes it a slow and painful death.
I've been using Winchester Power Point 150 grain 300 Win Mag for a LONG time. Close to 50 kills and most were 1 shot drop on the spot. Not all, but most! Great upload 👍
Thank you for this video. I have been looking everywhere I could on YT for a video like this. I am a first year bow hunter and finally got my bow setup. Having shot a gun for years, I needed something that would tell me where to aim with a bow. This helped me greatly. Keep putting out good work!
LOVE THIS VIDEO! Every hunter should understand 1 shot one kill. I just took a nice GA 8 pt this week that was quartering towards me. Always envision then exit hole like you’re watching CSI. I obliterated the heart, part of both lungs, and the liver with a Barnes TSX 165gr 308 at 75yd. The buck made it not even 20 yds into a creek bed. IMHO the exit is way more important than the entrance.

I didn't shoot a deer for two or three years because I wanted a nice buck, and last year it finally paid off. The feeling of shooting your first animal is fantastic, and the feeling of shooting your first buck is better. You should feel pride for that animal's life, and you should also be slightly sad at the taking of a life. However, you should be happy about the food that the animal is providing, and the fantastic life that it lived. If you more inspiration, I'm 12 and shot my first deer when I was 7 or 8. The was great and informative, Closing statement; actually has more meaning for me my family. Almost to opening day. My daughter said she wanted to go Deer hunting; Dad has a huge smile. only, she asked days before opening day. time to gear her up. Make sure your gear is in top shape...and your knives are 'SHARP"... We don't have these animals to harvest without our Creator - God Bless you All
Hey Grant, thank you again for taking the time to make this video. I manage a 325 acre property for family and friends. The day before opening weekend for the last 3 seasons the owner and I have all "Shooters"...especially the younger shooters...acknowledge they have watched this video. We do have Shooters who take neck shots ONLY if the deer are facing them and they show this year's proof of 1" or less 5 shot group. The owner fines anyone who fails to recover a deer in the amount of the cost of the fall food plot seed for 19.5 acres. Shall I say that does not happen often?
Very informative run through of aiming with different hunting equipment, thank you!!! How much of a difference would you say it would make with other critters (e.g., elk, antelope)?
I took a bad shot many years ago and never found the deer. I made myself a deal to never do that again. If I don't get the shot I want, I don't pull the trigger. It's that simple. I have no reason to take a bad shot. I'm not starving to death. If I don't get to shoot a deer today, I get to go hunting again another day. I'm talking about rifle hunting, not archery. Archery is a completely different game. Great video, thanks.
Imo that's even more important for archery, with a good firearm there's a little room for error because of the shockwaves the bullet generates. An arrow has to directly contact the vital bits, and enough of them, to bleed out the deer quickly.
So many amazing deer 🤤 Edit: oh...my...gad!! 12:36 to be ready with your bow and see that deer wander around the corner!! That is.. well... that's what it is all about. What an amazing thing to capture on film!
Great video! Appreciate the good reminders - especially about broadhead sharpness. Will definitely need to check mine before season starts. (I cringed at the shot placement on the buck at 14:34 - hit him right in the elbow. Broadhead probably stuck right in the leg bone. Hard to judge what they'll do when they hear that arrow shot!)
... you never really covered anything about head on shots with a bow on deer though .. i was curious as to where you'd aim in that situation.. i ended up getting a large mule deer with a head on shot last year it was one lung is what i had thought at first but it ended up being a double lung and i pinned his leg he dropped fairly quickly.. it was a 50 yard shot ..
A deer's brain is relatively small so I avoid head shots as the deer can move while the hunter is pulling the trigger. The vitals are a much larger target.
I’m with you Dire Wolf. I will take a headshot every time. For a couple reasons; one it is either hit or miss (not that i miss;) i have never had a headshot that did not amount in immediate death of the deer. The other big reason is the meat. Depending on the penetration you at least ruin a shoulder roast, or else the neck roast. And assuming you hit the heart.... that’s one of the best parts.. heaven forbid you miss and open up the entertainer, or the stomach.. that can be awful. And near impossible to tidy in the field. I would take a heart shot, maybe, in a starvation situation where i was feeling weak, or tired, and didn’t think i was in proper control of my gun.. the only reason not to take a headshot, is if you are really into eating the brains
@@timmebruer5205 I was concerned about that when I first started out but would not hunt any other way at this point. I've been very lucky with 100% kill rate so far. No lie.
I watched this video 8 weeks ago after gut shooting a deer with a crossbow. It was broadside but I think it moved a tad. I wasn't sure what to do with quartering or steep angle shots from tree stand. This evening I shot a buck with my rifle as it was quartered towards me and I was sitting up against a tree with wind towards me. I did exactly what this video said and got a double lung shot....we looked as it was skinned/gutted no meat wasted. Thank you for a great video!
with rifle I typically aim for opposite shoulder..or close to it.... to get bullet through vitals and break down their shoulders....our season starts Aug15 so a quick recovery is more important to me than couple pounds of lost meat in each shoulder. I dont take stright on or straight away shots. For my traditional bowhunting I go tight in behind shoulder so any miss up,down, left, right....I still get in the engine pump area of heart and/or lungs. I dont take hard quarting shots bowhunting even though I dont shoot over 20yds with longbows and recurves. Good video...thank you.
@@GrowingDeerTV I shoot them all.....hahaha....started with Jeffery then Habu....mostly Robertson longbow and recurves but have a nice used Blacktail recurve I have been using past couple years. Like most trad guys...I have a few old vintage Brownings on wall...some selfbows...some longbows. I just pick one and that is what I use the entire year. ;) Ken Beck is a great guy and the company couldnt be in better hands under the new ownership of Roger and all.
Great video for someone new like me. I don't know why but @ 21:48, I was in stiches when you whistled to get the deer's attention. I can't believe that worked lmao!
I already know where to shoot with a bow and a rifle and I have killed a deer, but this was a great video non the less. The deer that I killed was my first and it was a beautiful 8 pointer that dropped on the spot penetrating both lungs.
Thank you, this was helpful in explaining the topic to my grandson. He is 12 and has been in the field for 3 seasons now and has his first rifle. He asked me why people in this video are shooting deer from their houses? I had to laugh, we hunt the back country of the Pacific North West and use no blinds or tree stands.
I’m going today wish me luck I am a pretty bad shot but I hope to smoke one today I have shot at three deer in my life and hit one (with buckshot) but I’m taking my 243 today
Don't ever try to shoot a deer in the head. I made that mistake once, I hit it in the nose and my cousin killed that deer a week later. That was 15 years ago and I still kick myself about that poor deer having to walk around for a week with half a face, unable to eat or drink. Just don't do it!
I was like, I don’t have to know where to aim I’ve been doing this for 10 years... then I realized in those ten years I’ve only killed 1 deer... so yeah probably need to know where to aim
Thank you, this is really helpful! I've been hunting for years but we don't always see anything so I haven't downed anything since 2021 (and that was only my second time ever--first was 2016!! I have bad luck on our property). This is a good refresher.
Winchester silvertip they quit making it!!! Had more luck with it !!! Never had one walk away for runaway more than 5 yards !! Winchester let me down when they stop making that !!!
@@GrowingDeerTV I think we're getting confused on silver tips.. I have shot the ballistic in my rifle and found they're not as accurate as the old silvertips!! Copper bullet with aluminum cap !! But they definitely expand better than the new ones ... I guess if you want to get technical it would be the first generation silvertips?? The new ones or 3rd generation are decent, but they don't expand like the old ones , in my opinion!!!!
They stoped making the Silvertips? Dammed. That my perfed for the 30-30 and one of the 6mm rems. I didn't know because I bought a case of each years ago. So I still have a supply of them.

My daughter said she wanted to go Deer hunting; Dad has a huge smile. only, she asked days before opening day. time to gear her up. Make sure your gear is in top shape...and your knives are 'SHARP"... We don't have these animals to harvest without our Creator - God Bless you All
I hope you and your daughter have a great season!
Chris - Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for making this video. Just have my 12 years old watch before his youth hunt coming in 3 weeks even though I taught him where to aim.
I hope you both have a great season!
@@GrowingDeerTV thanks.
@@PUREMEATPURSUIT how did it go?
@@mineshawn8960 my son harvest a doe, his first Iowa deer. Thanks for asking.
@@PUREMEATPURSUIT great to hear! I don’t hunt. Unless it’s in the supermarket. It just fun to watch and learn. Cause meat is goooood
never seen such a good quality presentation of shot placement, very grateful!
Thanks Matt! I appreciate your encouraging words!
Very informative run through of aiming with different hunting equipment, thank you!!! How much of a difference would you say it would make with other critters (e.g., elk, antelope)?
Dave - Elk are large critters - I wouldn't take a shoulder shot on them. Shot placement for Deer and antelope are the same.
@@GrowingDeerTV Thank you!
Great video! Thanks. Shows responsible hunting, and considers animal suffering as FIRST. excellent.
Chris - Thanks!
Great info here! Kudos on mentioning The Creator!
Subbed.
Thanks for the sub!
cant wait till deer season!
It will start soon!
@@GrowingDeerTV grouse october 1st and deer is october 27 til november 27 how about you where ur at?
I took a bad shot many years ago and never found the deer. I made myself a deal to never do that again. If I don't get the shot I want, I don't pull the trigger. It's that simple. I have no reason to take a bad shot. I'm not starving to death. If I don't get to shoot a deer today, I get to go hunting again another day. I'm talking about rifle hunting, not archery. Archery is a completely different game. Great video, thanks.
Thanks for sharing and I agree!
Imo that's even more important for archery, with a good firearm there's a little room for error because of the shockwaves the bullet generates. An arrow has to directly contact the vital bits, and enough of them, to bleed out the deer quickly.
I'm not a hunter, nor will I ever be one, but I still find videos like this fascinating.
Thanks for watching and the kind words!
If a deer is quartering away I wait until the closest leg is forward of the far leg. That way it "opens" up th kill zone. Your thought please.
Ken - If a deer is quartering away, the vitals are exposed. If the deer is broadside then having the closest leg forward is a big advantage!
So many amazing deer 🤤
Edit: oh...my...gad!! 12:36 to be ready with your bow and see that deer wander around the corner!! That is.. well... that's what it is all about. What an amazing thing to capture on film!
Thanks!
Hey I’m new to hunting and this helped me
Payton - Thanks and I hope you have great season!
Have a good season!
I just starting bow hunting and this is the most helpful tutorial for a little kid.
Have a great season!
Thank you
Thanks for these great tips. Ive not been hunting in awhile and do not have much experience. This was very helpful and gives me much to think about.

I love m'y dad his buying me a rifle and a shotgun... from alberta 😊💪. Love ur vids👍❤❤❤❤ and were making a yt chanell for hunting.

I just came across this wonderful instructional material. Thank you for sharing the knowledge and please keep up with the great work!
Thanks for the kind and encouraging words!
Thanks never thought of aiming in line with the leg

Best Video Ever On Shot Placement. Thanks, Dr. Grant On Opening My Eyes On Shooting Deer!
Thanks Shannon!
Great video thank you so many people don’t understand the importance of shot placement
Thanks Scott!
Superb coverage on rifle vs bow shot placement...videography outstanding...successful hunt in the making with this knowledge!
Thanks Paul!
... you never really covered anything about head on shots with a bow on deer though .. i was curious as to where you'd aim in that situation.. i ended up getting a large mule deer with a head on shot last year it was one lung is what i had thought at first but it ended up being a double lung and i pinned his leg he dropped fairly quickly.. it was a 50 yard shot ..
A deer's brain is relatively small so I avoid head shots as the deer can move while the hunter is pulling the trigger. The vitals are a much larger target.
Not head shots ... head on shots when the deer is facing towards you. I would never ever attempt a head hot with a bow that's just dumb
This is a really great video, Grant, one of your best ever!
I've always wondered why one wouldn't aim for the head with a rifle seem like the best way to preserve the hide
It's a good target for confident shooters!
@@haidafella8651 I've seen deer with their upper or lower jaws shot off by people like you.
They don't die right away they usually starve to death
@@timmebruer5205 I was concerned about that when I first started out but would not hunt any other way at this point. I've been very lucky with 100% kill rate so far. No lie.
We Are Miles From Nowhere i only shoot deer in the head or neck. unless it’s a big buck and i don’t want to risk missing him
I watched this video 8 weeks ago after gut shooting a deer with a crossbow.
Congratulations J K!
I admit I've Hunted, and I have Learned Something..
Thanks!
with rifle I typically aim for opposite shoulder..or close to it.... to get bullet through vitals and break down their shoulders....our season starts Aug15 so a quick recovery is more important to me than couple pounds of lost meat in each shoulder.
Thanks Ron! What recurve do you shoot? I grew up shooting Widows and I live close to Black Widow archery! Those are good guys!
Please don’t take headshots unless you’re ‘Johnny bubba’
This video was so informative. Thank you.
Thanks! for watching!
This is exactly what I was looking for. Very well done. Thank you!
RM - You are welcome!
This is great and highly helpful when teaching my kids how and where to aim.
I'm glad you enjoyed the information!
Greatest Video on Subject Matter. By a country mile!
Thanks Michael!
Just watching this gets my heart racing. November hurrrrry up!
Paxton - Have a great season!
Great video for someone new like me. I don't know why but @ 21:48, I was in stiches when you whistled to get the deer's attention. I can't believe that worked lmao!
Thanks for watching!
I already know where to shoot with a bow and a rifle and I have killed a deer, but this was a great video non the less. The deer that I killed was my first and it was a beautiful 8 pointer that dropped on the spot penetrating both lungs.
Adrian - Thanks!
Great visibility and understanding video on kill zone for new hunters like myself.
Thank u for your wisdom and time.
You are welcome and have a great season!
Your grandson is blessed to have you loving and spending time with him!
Thank you so much for this. This next buck's for you sir! 💪🏾
Thanks!
I’m nine and I’m gonna aim to tag my first boi next year.
Wesley - I hope you have some great hunts!
I’m going today wish me luck I am a pretty bad shot but I hope to smoke one today I have shot at three deer in my life and hit one (with buckshot) but I’m taking my 243 today
Great video! Making my kids watch this before taking their first deer this year
Wesley - I hope you and your family have a great season!
Don't ever try to shoot a deer in the head. I made that mistake once, I hit it in the nose and my cousin killed that deer a week later. That was 15 years ago and I still kick myself about that poor deer having to walk around for a week with half a face, unable to eat or drink. Just don't do it!
I agree! Thanks for sharing your experience.
I disagree. All the deer I've taken with a firearm have been headshots. No problems.
vaporTrail head shots all day. you get the best quality and the most amount of meat off the animal
Terrific description of both firearm and bow kill shots. Awesome work! Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
I was like, I don’t have to know where to aim I’ve been doing this for 10 years... then I realized in those ten years I’ve only killed 1 deer... so yeah probably need to know where to aim
Jake - We all can improve our game! I learn new stuff every season!
LoL... ya think sooo.. 😂
It’s really good tips and he explains it very well..
William - That is a good bullet and Winchester still makes it! sCheckout:www.basspro.com/shop/en/winchester-ballistic-silvertip-centerfire-rifle-ammo
Yup sliver tips great in my old vintage lever gun. 👍
They stoped making the Silvertips?
Dammed. That my perfed for the 30-30 and one of the 6mm rems.
I didn't know because I bought a case of each years ago. So I still have a supply of them.
