I met Christina Baranski on a flight to london 6 years ago (I was the crew member in charge that day) and told her the same thing. She was utterly charming.
I heard Cybill was such a diva she self sabotaged. Afraid that any costar outshined her and Baranski was good. She had nothing to worry about but she blew it. Allegedly.
Very strange coincidence! Christine Baranski popped into my head earlier today because I'd seen one of her Big Bang Theory episodes (on TV, NOT UA-cam) - and I thought to myself that I really needed to trace back through her career and watch everything because I love her SO much... And then THIS popped up in my feed! I didn't realize she was even in Cybill, it's from a time period where I didn't really watch TV.
Karen was a poor man's Patsy Stone crossed with a poor man's Suzanne Sugarbaker. She's at least part of the reason for why that name now has negative connotations. Honestly, even the gay waiter played by Tim Macular on this show was less of a stereotype.
Legendary producer Chuck Lorre (i.e. Big Bang Theory) said that once Christine Baranski won her best supporting actress Emmy Cybill's attitude changed dramatically... Maryann's part was cut down and some of the punchlines given to Cybill instead ... Of course the show was cancelled soon after.
Ya, it’s pretty obvious that Chuck Lorre is incredibly brilliant with creating sitcoms but not so good at dealing with actors. She’s not the only one he’s had trouble dealing with and thus ended a great show.
@@ionabarker they won't. Not after the way the reboot of her show ended. I'm just waiting for Gary Janetti's NDA to expire so we can hear the real horror stories about her Megan Mullaly. Interesting fact: Megan's first regular sitcom role was a Disney show (from Touchstone) called *The Ellen Burstyn Show* that aired right after the ill-fated *Life with Lucy.* El Ratón is responsible for foisting her on the world, too, just like they stuck us with Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.
I honestly developed a new respect for Cybill after watching this just because I could understand whether it was like trying to make it big in show business after growing up in the South. I loved the episode where her agent died and all his other clients showed up: celebrity impersonators
Christine Baranaski is outstanding for sure, but I love Cybill Shepard too. Cybill's characters were almost always the good one, the sane one, the one who fixes things etc. I would love to see Cybill in a darker role a charcter with problems, even a serial killer or a psycho. I think she would excell! Is she still acting?
My favorite line of Maryann's: "Here, drink this. It makes you not care." Great advice. Ms Baranski had a priceless delivery but generally, she deserved better material.
I wish the show was never cancelled. It was a classic. When it was on cable TV way back around 2011, an entire cable channel was devoted to running every single episode and I watched ALL the episodes. As much as I genuinely like Cybill Sheppherd it was Maryanne who always had a martini in her hand was dressed to the nines - slinging her hilarious, sardonic jokes that made the show - everyone else was just "weak tea" compared to Maryanne! I remember the first time I saw Christine Baranski was when she had a small role in the movie about Claus Von Bulow. She only had about 4 scenes but I knew she was going to become a big star in Hollywood. I did not know she had a long career on Broadway long before she was cast in her big break out role as Maryanne. Of course, the tabloids tried to invent some sort of fictitious "feud" between Christinne Baranski and Cybill Shephered but in fact, they were great friends and it was Cybill Sheperd who pushed the producers to cast Baranski in the role, although many other actresses auditioned.
Cybill Shepherd claimed in her biography that the show was canceled because she wouldn't sleep with the then head of CBS. Wouldn't be a shocker because there are similar complaints about that guy.
I`m surprised nobody`s mentioned her in `Bowfinger`, the movie which also starred Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy, made in 1999, just after Cybill. Not `mainstream`, but I found it hilarious.
It's quite fascinating. I remember really enjoying this show when it first came out. I remember thinking that Christine Baranski stole every single scene she was in with Cybil Shepherd. I remember thinking that Cybil probably started to hate her because it was quite obvious that Christine was better in all ways. (Sometimes the second banana IS better.) That said, watching it now (June 2024), I'm not laughing at all. It just doesn't strike me as funny. But wow, when it first came out, I wrote a spec script for it and almost got an agent. So, it clearly worked at the time. But... it just doesn't hit me now at all.
Mary Ann was the scene stealer ❤
I hear that's why the show ended.
@@AVADAMS1967holy shit.
I use to watch this. It is where I fell in love with Christine Baranski.
She WAS this show. I suspect Cybill knew it and had trouble accepting that fact.

Me too.
One of my all time favorite tv characters ever! 😂😂 I revisit some of these old sitcoms occasionally, especially these days. I need the laughter.
I LOVE Cybill Sheppard & Christine Baranski, together! This was a very good show!
I heard Cybill was such a diva she self sabotaged. Afraid that any costar outshined her and Baranski was good. She had nothing to worry about but she blew it. Allegedly.
@@DanFrederiksen Cybill's career went nowhere but Christine's zoomed after this. If Cybill messed herself up over it, too bad. That's show biz.
Face it, she made the show!
She did and Cybill Shepherd couldn’t stand it. She got Chuck Lorre fired and made Alan Ball’s life hell.
"Well, I've either spilled my drink or I've peed myself...........oh damn.......it's my drink"
I really liked this show. Christine really made it work. She is so amazing
Omg love Christine ❤❤❤😂😂😂😂 she was great in mama mia
She was a GREAT friend 🤣🤣🤣
Christine is one of my favorite inspirations for daily life. Love her.
she is hot too.

Love it when that happens.
All new to me too! They both are amazing!
I just watched The Birdcage. She’s magnificent 😀
This made my day. I haven’t seen this in forever and I’m going down the rabbit hole of Cybil. Thanks for posting.
I remember this show!! Loved it as a teenager!!
Loved this show
Love Christine!! ❤
She's awesome in practically every role she's played, comedy and drama, small and big screen.
She did Mame at the Kennedy Center. She was amazing!
Christine stole the show.
I don't think there could have been a Karen Walker without a Marianne Thorpe.
Karen was a poor man's Patsy Stone crossed with a poor man's Suzanne Sugarbaker. She's at least part of the reason for why that name now has negative connotations. Honestly, even the gay waiter played by Tim Macular on this show was less of a stereotype.
Megan Mullaly said she had to find a way to make Karen be different as that type of character was already done with Maryann in Cybill.
@@popmans9999yeah I remember when she specifically said that
Christine Baranski is always the best thing she's in, even if Julie Walters is in it with her. We need sooooo much more CB!

I thought she was sexually accosted by some higher up?
Then again, what do I know.
Ya, it’s pretty obvious that Chuck Lorre is incredibly brilliant with creating sitcoms but not so good at dealing with actors. She’s not the only one he’s had trouble dealing with and thus ended a great show.
I want a series where Maryann and Karen walker are actually long lost friends.

Les Moonves' hatred of women killed this, ruined the last season of *The Nanny,* and hobbled the Bette Midler sitcom right out of the gate.
Never a Cybil Shepherd fan. She always seemed like she was holding back, never relaxed. Christine Baranski was always so much fun.

Or we could hold a pillow over my face until I stop struggling 🤣🤣🤣
"a blanket?" "buh, hu, ah, bub", "what about a martini?" "make it a double". The most Marianne moment I could think of. 😂🤣😂
Thank you so much for uploading this
First time seeing Maryann I thought of Ab Fab.
But I see where Karen Walker got her inspiration.
Loved ab fab. Didn't realize their was that much similarity between the two shows. Christine is a winner!
The show was actually a reimagined american version, just like High Society (Jean Smart & Mary McDonnell)
She should have guest starred on "Will & Grace" as a friend of Karen Walker. Marianne was a prototype
Please! Maryann is perfect Karen was a less impressive version
Nahhhh ... very different ! Not totally unlike but Maryanne is far , FAR warmer .
Christine has always had the best lips
She was the best thing on the show!!! So beautiful ❤
OK. SHE IS ICONIC AND SPECIAL IN THE SHOW....MARY ANNE THORPE. 2024. 💎👏👏👏....Dr. Dick.
Loved Maryann! Thanks for making this compilation.
That beef and white wine joke is KILLER !
I missed this show. Truly.
The *Smokey and the Bandit III* reference was funny when you remember that Cybill Shepherd actually made a movie musical with Burt Reynolds.
I love this show and miss it a lot
Maryann is the greatest character ever EVER. SHOW SHOUND NOT OF EVER BEEN CANCELLED.
I would have loved, still would love a show called "Divorcing Dr. Dick" [Working Title] that focuses on Marianne. xoxo
‘Just do “Patsy”…it’s all you can do…’🤭
Underrated MOTHER!
Christine and Alicia made that show. Also liked Alan Rosenberg as Ira.
My favorite line of Maryann's: "Here, drink this. It makes you not care." Great advice. Ms Baranski had a priceless delivery but generally, she deserved better material.
there’s something about her affectations in the beginning of the clip that REALLY reminds me of niles from frasier
No wonder Cybill hated Christine Baranski... She's by far the better actor!
Look, it's Dr. Beverly Hofstadter and Ms. Agnes van Rhijn...😂
Cyrillic Sheppard uber launched Christine Baranski and Bruce Willis with her TV shows. She saw 💎 diamonds.

Chuck Lorre, imagine Christine being on Big Bang back together with Chuck. Awesome!!
Maryanne was Smoking Hot and her legs are Killer and she is funny as Hell 😂😂😂
This show was funny and witty, I hated how it ended though.
Same
What happened
@@anotherworlddddended on a hugeee cliffhanger . show was sadly cancelled
The cliffhanger was that Cybill and Maryann were being arrested for murdering Dr. Dick, but they canceled the show and never resolved that.

All these years later…my favorite is “This is DKNY..Not F-O-O-D!!!” 😂
The fact that Helen Park is her mother is just a gem
I LOVE
Thx

The original Karen Walker
I saw this show before AbFab, but it is clearly at least an homage.
The show was actually a reimagined american version, just like High Society (Jean Smart & Mary McDonnell)

OMG.... where have I been? What show was this? How could I have missed this?! Are there reuns?!
We tuned in for Marianne, and tolerated Cybil.
Love her on the good fight.
Charles Durning and Christine Baranski. Could it get any better?

It’s pretty funny
This was a good show. Syb.love
Cybill can’t act, Christina can, it’s as simple as that.
Cybill can act, but she always got the sane, nice characters. Christine got the wacky character here!
I loved this show!
