It's not surprising, stylists give idols clothes that focus on their curves to make them look more appealing. But when the same idols wear everyday clothes, their real figure and skinniness comes out. Also a lot of female idols are severely underweight cause they're not allowed to gain the muscle needed to make up for the lack of fat and that's just as unhealthy as being overweight

Agree. Though I don't know why she's getting "fatshamed" tho cause like, I actually honestly prefer her now than the skinny her. I'm not saying she wasn't charming or beautiful before, but you could clearly see she became more vibrant and cuter when she started gained weight(I love her cheeks) plus, she looked healthier. I mean, she didn't even deserve being fatshamed and nor does anyone. As a matter of fact, bodyshaming shouldn't *even* be a thing. As long as you're healthy physically, emotionally and mentally, then you're good. What's the need of following netizen or society's idealistic standards for celebrities when the price you have pay for beauty/perfection is your health or worse, your own life. Sure, visuals can sometimes be a must when it comes to appreciating beauty but that's like, *just* temporary. It's not permanent. We all get old. Like flowers, we bloom and then wither and die. What's more important is the beauty within. Not just the smarts, but the empathy, the humour, the charisma and the heart of a person: that's what real beauty is. Sigh

I think the fan delusion is a bigger problem. Corporations are always going to exploit idols. If it sells, they aren't going to change anything. If fans thought more critically about the information they're getting, they might come to reasonable conclusions. Instead they pretend their idol is the bestie and that their bestie would never lie. Like, these people aren't your friends. Anything that publicly comes out of their mouths was put there or approved by the label. Idols are commercial products designed to appeal. If fans stopped buying products from certain groups in protest, that might change things. Corporations only care about their bottom line.

I want to know if there are forbidden or inhumane things the management forces their artists to do/eat etc. Coz how come they are very energetic on stage? Are they taking energetic pills which I don't know if there is something like that, or maybe energy drink? And sometimes I wonder how the girls legs are the same sizes all skinny, when compared to GG of other countries some are skinny some have thick legs. And all identical face shapes when in fact Koreans have round faces. I was shocked several times when I saw Koreans in our city, young girls or teenagers most have round faces, the shape is almost perfectly round, and when compared to women in my country they will have a round face if they are fat or older, but these girls has normal body shape but round faces.

Listen to what Amber Liu has to say about this topic, or how many of them are put on extreme diets by their managers, how most of them do only "liquid diets" (where they basically don't eat anything solid but only consume bevarages, bad bad bad for your health), how Jiyho from Twice was bodyshamed very publicly during a shoot because the photographer thought she was "too fat"....idols go on diets because they HAVE TO (these are the industry's standards) not because they WANT TO and this is by no means their normal or healthy weight. This goes for male idols too. And let's not forget the number of times idols have collapsed during performances because they were too overworked or on extreme diets or both. We must protect them, not agree and conform with the system that's destroying their health.

We can acknowledge when people are bullying idols for their bodies whether it’s about them being too skinny or too big, but the critiques on Korean beauty standards is incredibly valid.

I can’t even imagine what Somi looks like off-camera since she looks frighteningly thin on-camera.
I didn’t think this was going to generate so much conversation but fine, let’s talk about it. Somi is a public figure by her own choosing; part of that is going to be discussion of her appearance. My comment isn’t malicious. I don’t place any “blame” on her. I know that this kind extreme restriction/extreme exercise is normal, publicly acceptable, and privately encouraged. She’s not the problem.
If you compare her group photos to her solo photos, she lost a considerable amount of weight. If I knew someone in real life whose weight changed so dramatically in the same short amount of time, especially if they achieved it through three bananas a day? That would be legitimately concerning. I would be concerned about disordered eating. Y’all are almost certainly not old enough to remember Karen Carpenter, but the idea that it’s nobody’s business when any of these female celebs go from slim bodies to near-emaciation? It’s absurd. It’s dangerous as well. If your body looks like Somi’s, it always has, your doctor is not concerned about disordered eating or underlying medical issues, and you are healthy overall? Great. You deserve no comments or judgments from anyone else. But that’s not what goes on in Kpop and we all know it. Who was it in Twice who said they ate only ice and thought they were going to die - y’all that’s not ok. And I’m sure plenty of you have seen those compilations of managers grabbing food from idols. I am not attacking Somi as an individual with the right to pursue a career as she sees fit, just as any idol male or female. I would also love to see the actual portions of those meals of steak and wine and chocolate or whatever that she claims to eat (in between suggesting that people eat a acorn jelly because it’s the least gross no-calorie meal). I will never forget one of the passages in “Reviving Ophelia” when a teen girl dealing with anorexia told her therapist that she ate pizza and ice cream for dinner the night before, only to be immediately corrected by her mother as having eating one slice of pizza with the cheese scraped off and one teaspoon of ice cream. Again, not a personal attack on Somi as an individual but a rejection of the acceptance of things like when Park Bom was called the “Lettuce Genius” for openly crash dieting by eating little more than iceberg lettuce and POSTING IT ON ME2DAY. Off-camera photos like these are important in order to lift the veil and show what women on extreme calorie restriction and intense exercise regimens look like without the hip pads and stage lighting. I was a kid at a time when models were expected to look like junkies (no, this was literally the aesthetic of “heroin chic”), so any of y’all saying it’s rude to comment on an idol’s appearance? Maybe what’s actually “rude” is constructing an extremely misogynistic entertainment industry that reinforces these behaviors in the first place.

One thing that I noticed, besides how scary that is to a lot of people:
    1. Fancams are closer, not at a distance. Things get bigger the closer they are, obviously.
    2. They’re not dancing. In a lot of those dances, they’re putting their knees closer together, pretty much touching or crossing. That will create an illusion as well, considering they’re not standing still.
Some of these aren’t just being skinny, they’re actually scary. And I don’t want to judge or bodyshame, and I’m not a medical health professional who can definitively say it’s unhealthy, but it seems like we’re just looking at a dangerously low weight, even for their body types.

Dude, c'mon, I understand you're not trying to bodyshame, but calling someone a "skeleton" specifically the K-Pop idols you “want to support” is just the rudest thing ever. You know it’s the oldest thing in the body shaming book, so why would you call them that? There are so many better ways to tell people about them without using words that are specifically made to harm them emotionally, so why didn’t you use those words instead?
Not to mention, it’s extremely harmful to their mental health. They’ll go by "one extreme" to the other in no time if people like you don’t watch what you’re saying because of how judgmental society is today. There’s no issue with saying that someone looks unhealthy, but saying that "they look like skeletons/a skeleton” is just harmful and terrible. I know you’re trying to promote healthiness, and I’m glad that you’re advocating for it. But what you’re really doing is promoting insecurity among K-Pop idols (as if the industry wasn’t already cruel enough) and masking it as "concern." Please, please word your comments better next time, I beg of you.

On stage: Hip pads, push up bras, slimming outfits, heels, tights.
Off stage: Just a normal(albeit they are all absolutely beautiful and talented) skinny person.
You know when you’re walking down the street and you see someone who’s extremely skinny and you don’t think much of it, not because they’re unattractive or because you assume they’re unhealthy. But because you’ve SEEN skinny people before, it’s not like an unheard of thing. So many girls pressure themselves to be that skinny to fit “beauty standards” when in all reality no one really cares if someone is skinny or not. This video should be a reminder of that.
It reminds me of how “curvy” girls are only praised when they have an hour glass body, accompanied by some type of corset and body shapers. In the same way Kpop idols are the “special” skinny where they have wide hips and an hourglass body with strong legs. When in all reality they just look like your everyday skinny person without all the glitz and glamour.

But there is also a reality of them looking extremely skinny and fragile, sometimes it may just be in their genetics, but most of the time it is probably from the heavy work-load of a kpop idol and the extreme diets these people have to go through in order to fit the beauty standards. @@merry6539 Comparing idols to boxers, ballerinas, and other athletes makes no sense.
These professionals bulk up (i.e. build up muscle) and them being slim is a result of their low body fat : muscle ratio. Idols, on the other hand, especially female idols/idols whose concept is cute don't bulk for their career, and actually can't look muscular, because of the beauty standards and ideals of what women and "cute" looks like.
I don't understand where you're coming from that "boxers have it worse than idols", because boxers (and it differs between the styles) make muscle and maintain it at a high rate, whereas idols actually aren't wanted to have visible muscle, but it's just a side-effect of their active careers. Because of this, if idols don't have enough muscle to support their physicalities, or aren't training them properly, their muscles with atrophy, and this causes so many other problems.
Boxers (and other martial artists) slim down before a competition to enter a certain weight category, but that's for a week's duration and for burning excess fat accumulated during their off season. Idols are constantly expected to maintain a dangerously small figure, and they can't even go holiday periods without media updates of them being photographed, and this leads to them being constantly criticised online.
Unless you actively compete as a boxer/martial artists, that's such an ignorant, ill-informed comment to make "tbh". I honestly don't appreciate the comparisons, when you've just complained about the comparison of skinny = fragile, which isn't what the commenter meant, despite all of them being skinny (which is such an out-dated, offensive term) not all look fragile, just that without the camera and other stage effects, their bodies look fragile. Being fragile in this context isn't offensive, they physically look weak, because they have no energy or muscle to support them. Also, having no body fat means that their joints would be so weak, because there's little cartilage to support them. That's what people mean; natural features of an active person are not visible on them, and that's extremely concerning when they're so active and their bodies are constantly demanded of something.

The one thing that I'm really concerned about the beauty standard for the female idols is the thigh gap.
I mean yes it may look attractive for some people but it doesn't mean that you should take extreme measures like a crash diet and burnout exercises at the same time. I've mostly been on the skinnier side throughout my whole life and tend to loose a lot of weight when it's exam time or I'm under a lot of pressure (trust me losing 5kgs a month all of a sudden really gets me concerned about my health cuz I need energy to do that sh*t ton of studying and work and it's tiresome) and always had people telling me how I should eat more until only recently when the whole kpop buzz hit hard that people around me suddenly starts dieting and appreciates being skinny (IMEANWOT -_-) Not only that I'm surprised but this just created a whole toxic environment for the people who are naturally more voluptous or those who have a different body type... everyone in the world isn't supposed to have the same type of figure and the trends just tend to change. What is beautiful now might not be the case later.
Now compare that to what idols must be feeling during comebacks... they push themselves to their nth percent and add that to the thousands and millions of people scrutinizing their every move and that stays throughout the whole lifetime of an idol. Being an idol, when you gain weight you're critisized, then you lose it and you're critisized again... You want to look them pretty and then compare yourself to that and make your self esteem smaller... well that shouldn't be happening.
They're mortal human beings just like us and no matter how perfect you want them to look for you on the screen they're just gonna die one day and so are you.. some might say they chose this life and fame but sometimes people push it too far... It's just that it's just so sad :(

When I pointed out how toxic and harmful a video praising "the skinniest kpop idols" was, I was called skinny-phobic and skinny shamer. I would never shame a person for being skinny and I don't blame them, but it is important that as a community we have the conversation about how common it is for idols to be underweight. I am not talking subjective notions of what skinny and fat is (which is the conversation that is often had) but talking about health and unhealthy role models for kids and teens. And now that we are talking about this also reflect on the superficiality that surrounds idol culture and fan culture, how much importance is given to "Visual" and skin color, and jaw lines, and s lines, sometimes it feels like it is everything people cares about. Having so many things to actually admire from idols and Korean culture people chose to fixate on the objectively negative aspects that even koreans regard as toxic of their own society. Maybe if we shift the focus to their talents, and good actions as fans we could help those who are being pressured into not eating enough, having plastic surgery or lightening their skin with dangerous products and no exposition to natural vitamins from their environment; and so many other harmful "traditions".

I agree with you partly but I also feel like there is a huge toxicity that stems from people when they question idols weight. I know majority of people come from a place of concern, but the only people who should be commenting on idols weight is their doctors. Being underweight does not always mean an idol is unhealthy. But more so, it is unhealthy if they have poor diets and underlying health problems because of the low weight. We probably won't know these idols diverse medical history and if they are truly unhealthy or just really skinny. I still remember when fans flooded Somi's comments when she posted a picture of her weight, and how she's had to comment multiple times on shows how she eats well and exercises, and is just purely really skinny. I think people forget how hard idol life is, these people dance for a career, almost every single day, and a lot of idols workout ontop of that; of course some idols are going to really skinny because their lifestyle is just completely different. An idol could be a relatively normal weight but be forced on starvation diets and having serious health problems. The human body is pretty amazing, and looks can be decieving.
The conversation of toxic beauty standards and how idols are forced to diet and be skinny is a whole other can of worms. It is terrible and I agree talent should be prioritized over looks. It breaks my heart when I hear idols talk about their eating disorders, or cases where idols go from thick to thin in the spam of a couple months (which is very unnatural), yoyo dietng, there are tons of cases where fans concerns are justified. But then I think of idols like Sunmi who has been skinny her whole life, and has had to constantly explain that all her family is just skinny, it just the way she is. So I would also like to point out that some idols are just.. skinny, some people cant gain weight no matter how hard they try.
Looking at this video I would never call any of these idols "unhealthy" (as many have pointed out, the video is misleading as fancams and videos were sometimes taken many months or even years apart) i think fans should be cautious with their concern, and make sure they identify if an idol is just skinny or actual has something unhealthy going on.
No hate to you op, I can tell you come from a place of concern.

    • @kpopoholic_4623

On the topic of plastic surgery, I would also be cautious. While I am always an advocate for learning to love yourself and embracing your features, plastic surgery is not inheritly bad.
if the idol did it to their own accord is happy with themselves then go ahead. There could be a conversation on how idols get ps to just please the public, but we will never know an idols thoughts or reasonings for plastic surgery. I mean Tons of American celebs get ps, I dont think its specific to Korea but just the celeb culture, I find it a bit hypocritical when fans only criticize korean idols.
It is a problem when minors get plastic imo, or if an idol is forced. I mean I know ps is common among teens, and I guess a simple eyelid or nose job is fine.. But ive seen some idols get extensive surgery. I think of the aespa members and how they probably got surgery in their teens, and Alot if it.. (no hate to them, theyre beautiful and it is their choice, but i cant imagine it was their own decision) Wonyoung isn't even an adult yet and has had a variety of surgeries, she was already praised when she first came on produce for her looks, and I blame their company, as I cant imagine her doing it on her own accord.
That is what I have a problem with, but regular consenting adult idols? Is fine to me..

    *kinda trigger warning? eating disorders:*
as someone with anorexia some of these girls look really malnourished. Theres a difference between skinny and unhealthily thin (also not to say that all anorexics are emaciated skinny - an eating disorder doesnt have a look), however with these idols its different... even naturally slender people's bones dont protrude outwards, show clearly reduced muscle, fat and tissue mass, or appear to have their thin skin fold tightly around their faces - these signs are all too familiar with my experience. these are only my observations but the kpop industry is known for promoting weight loss, unhealthy diets and, along with their extreme workout/dance schedules it is understandable why fans raise some concerns...
Edit: maybe im reaching... but at 0:04 wonyoung grabs around her wrist to see if her fingers touch on the other ends and might be a body checking behaviour. i used to do this a lot at my lowest weight
    Edit Edit:
When suspecting someone is struggling with an eating disorder, their behaviour changes as well! - an obsession of thinking about food or never eating it, binging tendencies (eating lots of food at once), going to the bathroom immediately after meals to purge and other sneaky behaviours. TALK TO A TRUSTED ADULT WHO UNDERSTANDS EATING DISORDERS. a misinformed adult is really damaging and only perpetuates shame within the disorder.

as someone who also as an eating disorder, totally agree. also, for the wonyoung thing, i also often do that without even noticing sometimes, and the only other people that i've seen doing that were always disordered people on ed platforms. while it might be a reach considering her obvious and worrying weight lossi do not think it's that far fetched...

@@celestinoclemente1954 exactly, it can be a subconscious thing but a very common behaviour in the ed community. also i realise now that some of these kpop stars did battle w eating disorders which is so sad.... the industry definitely needs to change.

People always say don't judge because many girls are naturally skinny and there's nothing wrong with that. But when you have almost all girls in one industry with their bones sticking out, you can't tell me there's no problem. When you have retired kpop idols talking about crazy diets, you can't tell me all these girls are just born this way. Skinny is perfectly fine, forcing someone to be skinny in unhealthy ways is wrong.

    • @Neekachu11
      @Neekachu11 2 роки тому +4

Yeah completely agree, there's nothing wrong with being skinny if that's how your body naturally looks, but there is something seriously messed up with the way companies make idols go to the extremes to fit the "standard" (whatever that may be at the current time). I once left a comment under a video saying how I believe this is going to lead the idols into health problems later in life (osteoporosis comes to mind as one) under an official kpop channel (stupid of me in hindsight) and my comment got deleted and reported for "violating community guidelines" -.- . Thankfully, UA-cam didn't suspend/delete my account or take any further action but that experience taught me a lot about the extent these companies must go to hide what they are doing.

Y’all say things like “this is so scary” but call jeongyeon fat 😐. Like not directly, but it’s obvious what y’all are trying to say with “the stylist does her wrong, that’s why she looks … different”, “we still love you…” , “others say she’s not pretty anymore but I still think so!” , “I hope she gets healthy soon, I worry for her…” and more. Y’all are just calling her fat in a nice way. Y’all are why she still feels like shit. As a big girl, i get it. How we see it, it’s basically y’all’s saying “wow, you look like huge big whale and your so confident to be out looking like a cow! But You’re so pretty to me!” And then y’all preach about how bad it is that idols go on these diets, shut up. The minute a plus size idol ever dares to debut y’all will lose your minds. Hell, y’all see skinny women that aren’t under weight debut and you already lose your minds, then bully them in Ed’s and then make fun of them for being skinny and call their skinny bodies “gross” because of course when an already skinny girls loses 25 pounds you start to see bones. Why can’t y’all let skinny idols just be skinny? Why do y’all have to laugh or be scared about their bodies? Just let them be skinny. It’s their body not yours. Same with being a healthy weight.

vvv because most of the time they are! People who sit on their phones all day and have no problem spending all their time talking about other peoples bodies are the ones talking about this. If an idol is too skinny they talk about how “they worry for them 🥺” or how their bodies are gross and unhealthy. And when they see average weight or slightly chunky idols they go into fits about how their unhealthy and should probably lose weight. If you really cared about the huge issues of idols and their body dysmorphia STOP TALKING ABOUT THEIR BODIES, PERIOD. You don’t need to comment on how skinny or fat they are. You are basically doing the exact same thing. It’s not your place to have an opinion weirdo. You commenting about how “scary and gross their skinny bodies are” does nothing! Expect cause more harm. People who have no remorse to shaming their idols for being skinny and falling to pressure of society usually have no issue to shame their same idols for being above that standard. Obviously it’s not all, but I’d put money more than half of the crowd does.

Have seen Idols several times (before pandemic) and they are extremely skinny. Male idols who look big on the screen are actually on average, and female idols who look thin on the screen are so skinny that their bones stand out when you see them in person. It is more than we imagine. Their arms and legs look like it will break if even a little impact is applied.
What's more heartbreaking is that there are idols who lose weight because they look more fat than other idols when they actually have a healthy figure. It hurts to see them getting thinner and thinner as they continue their album promotions.

Before some of y’all go off with the body shaming comments just know some of these idols are NATURALLY SKINNY, meaning this is their NATURAL healthy look/weight. They have openly talked abt that and how hard it is for them to gain weight in a healthy weight. One of them is Sunni who said that during the 24 Hours promotions she had to keep eating all day, even when not hungry to keep up the weight her fans wanted. I know they exist and I know the struggle cuz I myself am naturally skinny and face the exact same problems. Pls be respectful

@@georgeoust naturally skinny doesn't usually make you an underweight.
Everybody knows that the entertainment industry in South Korea demands absurd beauty standards and most idols/actresses are constantly on diets. For example IU revealed in a variety show that 4-5 days before the shooting day she would start drinking only water to have a specific looks on set. Momo ate only ice cubes for a while. BTS Jin ate only chicken breasts during "Wings" promotion.
And that's just three examples out of thousands.
Yes, if you are naturally skinny and have to train that much a day it's extremely hard to gain weight. But then it's on the company to drag out the idol/trainee and make sure they don't start being underweight.
You also should stop receiving criticism as body shaming. It would be body shaming if I said that all skinny people look underweight and ugly. And that's not what I did. I consider a lot of skinny people beautiful, like IU is the most beautiful looking person in the universe to me. However, that doesn't change the fact that the entertainment industry enforces sick eating behaviour on her and other celebrities.
I'm not blaming the idols who weigh the weight they weigh, I'm blaming the people who force them to live like that.

I worry about everyone in the industry who becomes victim of those idiotic beauty standards. Strangely, many "kpop fans" only tend to talk about weigh when it comes to the girl groups, not minding that boys struggle almost the same amount.
So take your salt elsewhere if your comment was related to me🙃
Edit: and no, I'm definitely not jealous. I'm going to uni studying the subject I wanted to study since I've been 14, I'm doing lots of sport and music in my free time, I can see my family and friends often so I'm more than happy with my life. I like to listen to the genre Kpop but I don't envy anyone who works as a Kpop idol. People gotta keep in mind that most Kpop idols don't make it and that even if they become a little more known they can barely make any living from it. Idols start their careers with huge debts that are hard to reduce.
Aside from a very small chance of being famous and making lots of money in the future there are just too many downsides to being a Kpop idol. You should know that if you were familiar with the industry.

The “Somi said she doesn’t like people talking about her weight” thing is irrelevant, imo. She openly shared details about her weight as a “gotcha” for the haters and it backfired. She doesn’t get to tell everyone not to respond to the fallout. I cant even begin to explain how many teens I’ve seen on the internet raving about how excited they are to do the Somi Method (eating a little bit & overexercising) or Somi Diet (the three bananas a day BS). I’ve seen so many girls her height on social media saying how they need to eat less to be smaller because “Somi managed to get that small at the same height as me, I need to work harder.” She’s a public figure and she opened those floodgates. I don’t think her issues with her weight are her fault, she’s definitely also a victim in this situation, but saying no one should be allowed to discuss or examine it because she can’t handle the effects of her words isn’t reasonable.
