Whenever we analyze Scripture in an attempt to ascertain its meaning, it is important that we follow a specific set of rules for interpretation. These rules of interpretation are referred to as hermeneutics, and they are essentially an agreed-upon set of guidelines that help us to interpret Scripture accurately and consistently. Hermeneutics includes analysis of the following (as well as a lot more I don't have space to cover): Definitions Context Historical context Usage Scriptural precedent As a result when you examine a specific scripture, such as 2 Corinthians 5:8, it is impossible to accurately interpret the meaning without properly analyzing the scriptural context of the passage itself, as well as that passage within the context of the entire book of 2 Corinthians. Second Corinthians 5:1-10 states: "For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad" (emphasis added). First, it’s important to recognize that the chapter and verse divisions that we see in our Bibles today were originally established by Robert Estienne in the 16th century. They were not a part of the original epistle sent to the Corinthian church. Therefore, the breaks we see in 2 Corinthians don’t necessarily represent the original author’s paragraph breaks. If we examine the overall context, the passage that starts chapter 5 refers back to the concepts that are outlined in chapter 4. Taking a quick look at the underlying concepts in the latter half of 2 Corinthians 4, we can see that Paul is discussing the idea of the temporal nature of this life. He explains that the difficulties and struggles of this life, therefore, are also temporary, and that there is a hope found in the promise of the resurrection (as stated in 2 Corinthians 4:14). "We can take heart as Christians, because He who raised Jesus Christ, will also raise us up by Jesus, and will present us to Him" (2 Corinthians 4:14). Paul goes on, to paraphrase, that it is important that as the outward man diminishes (perishes little by little each day) the inward man must be renewed (the transformation of our lives through Christ Jesus). As a result, our focus should be on the things not seen-the spiritual things-not on the physical things which we can see. And that leads into the concepts outlined in 2 Corinthians 5. The apostle Paul was a tentmaker by trade and understood tents. Tents by nature are temporary dwellings, not meant to be a permanent structure that is to be set up forever and ever. They serve their temporary purpose, and then they are taken down. When this "earthly tent" is destroyed-when the physical life we have is over-we have a building from God: a house not made with hands, but instead eternal in the heavens. Paul references the resurrection and the transformation to Spirit he discusses in other letters he wrote: 1 Corinthians 15:50-55 and 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17. He then begins to discuss the groaning and yearning that we have for this permanent home in the Kingdom of God. We are burdened in this life, and we groan at its difficulties and struggles. We don’t desire to have our life taken from us, but instead desire to be clothed in life, to obtain eternal life in the Kingdom of God. However, in order for that to happen, whether we die or are transformed at Christ's return, we must be separated from this physical life, this tent. While we are in this physical life, we are absent from the Lord, from the eternal life in His Kingdom that he has promised. We are able to remain confident in this promise of eternal life, because it is given by God (Hebrews 6:17-20). This hope of the resurrection anchors us. Paul goes on to say that as a result of all of this, we can be well pleased in death. We don’t have to look at death as something to fear, or something that is devastating. Instead we can be well pleased to be absent from this earthly tent, and in the next instant of our consciousness be present with the Lord after the resurrection. Because we will all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, either in this life (1 Peter 4:17) or after the resurrection (Revelation 20:11-13), it is important to live a life that is well pleasing to him. We can take the writings of the apostle Paul in this particular passage of 2 Corinthians 5, and take heart in the words he conveys. They are hopeful and a promise that we can be certain our Great God will keep.

There is only one place in the bible from Gen to Rev which uses the term "faith alone" and it is proceeded by the word "not". In that book of James there is an important statement about this idea. James writes about Abraham, an often listed person who was saved before and without lifting a finger. Lets actually read what James says on this matter. Jas 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works (when) he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Jas 2:22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? Jas 2:23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS ACCOUNTED TO HIM FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS." And he was called the friend of God. Jas 2:24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. The word "when" is an adj. and it's temporal. It tells us "when" at what point Abraham was considered justified by God. Maybe you have never actually read this verse. You also simply don't understand what the word "faith" means. Its the Greek word "pistis" and it's a noun. It NEVER means believe. That would be the word pisteuo in the Greek. That is the word correctly translated believe. NOT faith. Most bible translations are from those who are reformers. Men who believe in the Luther doctrine of faith alone. That is a vile concept Luther picked up from some of his friends like Wycliffe and Huss. The bible NEVER teaches the faith alone doctrine. Heb 11:8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going. Notice this tells us "when" Abraham did what he did "by faith". It was "when he was called" . What did he DO? He obeyed God's instructions. You must think he should have said to God, "no way Lord, I don't believe in working my way to heaven" you need to read Luther. Abraham "obeyed by faith". Faith is what God told him to do. Jesus died so we could receive The Word of God. Being reconciled to God makes it so we can seek His counsel on how to keep from being deceived. We are told "do not be deceived". An order, we need to find the answer to. We are being hit from every side. We need our Father's protection both spiritually and physically. Those who teach we do not need the O.T. are deceiving you. It is our Father's wisdom we so desperately need. One doesn't have to think "law" every time we seek the wisdom of our Father. See it as the love of Jesus who died and allowed us to receive such wisdom. In Deut.6:8-9 we are told to apply The Word of God upon our forehead and hand. 1:45 The only problem with Dave Hunt's view is that he somewhat judges salvation based on works. While works could be an indication of salvation, we also know most non-believers (and false believers) are working to save themselves in some form. So we should not judge one's salvation based on works, but by their profession of belief in Jesus.
Works should never be an indicator! Yes as believers we should live morally upright lives but salvation is not earned or maintained by good works therefore works should not be the indicator. The only indicator is the doctrine they say they believe.

It's why we also shouldn't assume one is saved, but should ask people tough questions about Jesus and what they believe. My wife and I find that less than 50% of "Christians" believe Jesus is God, and the majority think there's more than one way to be saved. It's pretty concerning actually.

Dave, The sin of the "Garden" was not partaking of the literal fruit of a literal tree. It was the partaking of the "Fruit of the Loom" of Satan. JohnLee It does seem that way doesn't it! Typically people get different interpretations depending on how they approach the bible. The bible is an alien document, written for and by believers. However, it has the capacity to draw and to affect the hearts of non believers who approach it in earnest. It does not lend itself to mockers, scoffers and naysayers as God opposses the proud, but gives grace to the humble. The gospel message is a stumbling block to those who are self-righteous and it is foolishness to the worldwise. And this is intentionally so. Humility is the key. That is, one must first believe that God exists and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. As a result when you examine a specific scripture, such as 2 Corinthians 5:8, it is impossible to accurately interpret the meaning without properly analyzing the scriptural context of the passage itself, as well as that passage within the context of the entire book of 2 Corinthians.
Second Corinthians 5:1-10 states:
"For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. Therefore we make it our aim, whether present or absent, to be well pleasing to Him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad" (emphasis added).
First, it’s important to recognize that the chapter and verse divisions that we see in our Bibles today were originally established by Robert Estienne in the 16th century. They were not a part of the original epistle sent to the Corinthian church. Therefore, the breaks we see in 2 Corinthians don’t necessarily represent the original author’s paragraph breaks.
If we examine the overall context, the passage that starts chapter 5 refers back to the concepts that are outlined in chapter 4.
Taking a quick look at the underlying concepts in the latter half of 2 Corinthians 4, we can see that Paul is discussing the idea of the temporal nature of this life. He explains that the difficulties and struggles of this life, therefore, are also temporary, and that there is a hope found in the promise of the resurrection (as stated in 2 Corinthians 4:14). "We can take heart as Christians, because He who raised Jesus Christ, will also raise us up by Jesus, and will present us to Him" (2 Corinthians 4:14). Paul goes on, to paraphrase, that it is important that as the outward man diminishes (perishes little by little each day) the inward man must be renewed (the transformation of our lives through Christ Jesus). As a result, our focus should be on the things not seen-the spiritual things-not on the physical things which we can see.
And that leads into the concepts outlined in 2 Corinthians 5.
The apostle Paul was a tentmaker by trade and understood tents. Tents by nature are temporary dwellings, not meant to be a permanent structure that is to be set up forever and ever. They serve their temporary purpose, and then they are taken down.
When this "earthly tent" is destroyed-when the physical life we have is over-we have a building from God: a house not made with hands, but instead eternal in the heavens. Paul references the resurrection and the transformation to Spirit he discusses in other letters he wrote: 1 Corinthians 15:50-55 and 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17.
He then begins to discuss the groaning and yearning that we have for this permanent home in the Kingdom of God. We are burdened in this life, and we groan at its difficulties and struggles. We don’t desire to have our life taken from us, but instead desire to be clothed in life, to obtain eternal life in the Kingdom of God.
However, in order for that to happen, whether we die or are transformed at Christ's return, we must be separated from this physical life, this tent. While we are in this physical life, we are absent from the Lord, from the eternal life in His Kingdom that he has promised. We are able to remain confident in this promise of eternal life, because it is given by God (Hebrews 6:17-20).
This hope of the resurrection anchors us.
Paul goes on to say that as a result of all of this, we can be well pleased in death. We don’t have to look at death as something to fear, or something that is devastating. Instead we can be well pleased to be absent from this earthly tent, and in the next instant of our consciousness be present with the Lord after the resurrection. Because we will all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, either in this life (1 Peter 4:17) or after the resurrection (Revelation 20:11-13), it is important to live a life that is well pleasing to him.
We can take the writings of the apostle Paul in this particular passage of 2 Corinthians 5, and take heart in the words he conveys. They are hopeful and a promise that we can be certain our Great God will keep.

Sir, I find it quite interesting that you would say that a cult is one that teaches "justification by faith alone". There is only one place in the bible from Gen to Rev which uses the term "faith alone" and it is proceeded by the word "not". In that book of James there is an important statement about this idea. James writes about Abraham, an often listed person who was saved before and without lifting a finger. Lets actually read what James says on this matter.
Jas 2:21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works (when) he offered Isaac his son on the altar?
Jas 2:22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?
Jas 2:23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS ACCOUNTED TO HIM FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS." And he was called the friend of God.
Jas 2:24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
The word "when" is an adj. and it's temporal. It tells us "when" at what point Abraham was considered justified by God. Maybe you have never actually read this verse.
You also simply don't understand what the word "faith" means. Its the Greek word "pistis" and it's a noun. It NEVER means believe. That would be the word pisteuo in the Greek. That is the word correctly translated believe. NOT faith. Most bible translations are from those who are reformers. Men who believe in the Luther doctrine of faith alone. That is a vile concept Luther picked up from some of his friends like Wycliffe and Huss. The bible NEVER teaches the faith alone doctrine.
Heb 11:8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.
Notice this tells us "when" Abraham did what he did "by faith". It was "when he was called" . What did he DO? He obeyed God's instructions. You must think
he should have said to God, "no way Lord, I don't believe in working my way to heaven" you need to read Luther. Abraham "obeyed by faith". Faith is what God told him to do. Another adj, "when".
You really need to actually read the words written by the inspiration of God and believe them.

Jesus died so we could receive The Word of God. Being reconciled to God makes it so we can seek His counsel on how to keep from being deceived. We are told "do not be deceived". An order, we need to find the answer to. We are being hit from every side. We need our Father's protection both spiritually and physically.
Those who teach we do not need the O.T. are deceiving you. It is our Father's wisdom we so desperately need. One doesn't have to think "law" every time we seek the wisdom of our Father. See it as the love of Jesus who died and allowed us to receive such wisdom.
In Deut.6:8-9 we are told to apply The Word of God upon our forehead and hand. The very Spirit from the mouth of God will lead and guide us from this world and its minions.
Take advantage of what we are given and search the Scriptures, all of them for the wisdom we will need in the coming days. Do and keep all you find that is good. May God go with us all.

1:45 The only problem with Dave Hunt's view is that he somewhat judges salvation based on works. While works could be an indication of salvation, we also know most non-believers (and false believers) are working to save themselves in some form. So we should not judge one's salvation based on works, but by their profession of belief in Jesus.
Works should never be an indicator! Yes as believers we should live morally upright lives but salvation is not earned or maintained by good works therefore works should not be the indicator. The only indicator is the doctrine they say they believe.
@@patrickphilip777 I agree, because all the unbelievers hold to some form of works-salvation. Everyone from Mormons to Buddhists believe in working to be saved, but we know this can't save them.
It's why we also shouldn't assume one is saved, but should ask people tough questions about Jesus and what they believe. My wife and I find that less than 50% of "Christians" believe Jesus is God, and the majority think there's more than one way to be saved. It's pretty concerning actually.
