    I always think you have the best hiking videos then I look at other UA-cam creator videos doing some of the same trails and realize that you really are the best out there and my Go To channel especially for the Californian trails where I live. Appreciate all the work you put in shooting the action as it happens and in post production editing.

    Your image quality always blows my mind and you’ve demonstrated that you can achieve this with minimal gear. That’s because you use it wisely and make the effort to get to amazing locations! Keep up your great work and wonderful chemistry!

      Thanks very much, Vincent! You put it exactly right -- for us it is definitely all about getting quality with a minimum of gear. That's become true for us not only with videography, but increasingly with life as well -- we're really striving for minimalism even when it comes to what we wear every day and things like that. It just makes everything so much simpler and better! ❤️

    This is why you guys are my favorite UA-cam site. So many times I have wondered what people are using and the question remains unanswered. This is so awesome that you are willing to pull aside the curtain and let us have the inside scoop. I have played with lots of options over the year and just upgraded for this year. I settled on very similar choices. I had a GoPro6 but quality just wasn't there. I bought a GoPro10 when it came out but the battery life was so bad I could never imagine taking it on an extended trip. The nine seems to have software glitches, so I finally returned the ten and bought a GoPro8 which I have been experimenting with. I have four trips planned this summer and am very exited to see how this ups my game. I also settled on 4K 60 in part because I downloaded the video you shared with us and it looked awesome in 4K 60, so its all your fault. In 2020 I filmed our Montana trip that I just posted with a then new insta360 X1 but it has so much lens distortion it can be annoying used that much. However it does make some pretty cool almost drone like shots used judiciously. For my really nice non moving stuff I just got a Sony ZV-1 and now that it is set up right has some amazing potential. The only thing it doesn't do is zoom shots, so I have a cheap $150 DSC-WX350 that is a really nice tiny pocket camera with an amazing zoom and built in stabilization. It's only HD but how nice are superzoomed shots anyway. Coincidentally it takes the same batteries as the ZV-1 which is a plus. Very excited about trying out this new combo this summer. Also, for those who don't have the money for Finalcut Pro, DaVinci Resolve is an amazing editor for free. FYI it will do slow mo from 30fps and smooth it out so you can't tell. Some kind of mathematical magic. Opening scene of my latest Montana 2020 post is a perfect example, that came from 30fps. I love the example shot you used for audio, the now famous step on babies line :) Now that we know the secret of your cameras I am even more impressed with your editing skills. Good editing can fix a lot of other issues as you mentioned. Hats of to Adam, you have an amazing touch.

      Thanks very much -- love that we got you hooked on the 4K 60! We just got a GoPro 10 as well and have been having some software issues with that too, but it does do better in low-light so that's something. Wish GoPro could get the whole battery-life/software thing together, because it's a great tool except for those major glitches! ❤️

    I went with Da Vinci and OMG AWESOME but painful to learn. I used to do the little fuzzy mic cover but, the wind slayer, full body foam covering for the GoPro is at least as good and also protects the GoPro! I can’t wait for you guys to try an iPhone 13 Pro, the stabilization is up another level thanks to the sensor being stabilized. Super impressive low light too. I would use a longer selfie stick on your GoPro though, really nice to keep your arm out of the shot and get a little wider angle too. Especially if you wanna capture something specific in the back round. Someday we’ll get to hang out and I’ll show you a few my tricks as well. Thanks for all the info!

    Some really nice gear, and you guys have done an outstanding job of knowing the limitations, and dialing it all in! The quality you get shooting low light with the iPhone is amazing! Kate and I use the DJI Osmo Action ($200ish in Aug.'19), and I purchased some of the fuzzy "dead cat" style mic covers for wind, on Ama zon. • @austinado16
      @austinado16 2 роки тому

      @@LiveHardxLoveHard We haven't compared the DJI to the latest GoPro versions. At the time it came out, it was better, had much better battery life, didn't heat up and shut down, plus had viewing screens on the front and back, so it could be aimed. We liked all of those features. DJI also makes a very small gimble version, and a great example of how well that camera does, is on Jamil's channel, "run steep, get high," especially in videos like his "Chasing Walmsley" in the Grand Canyon, and is vids on Mount Marathon.

    Perhaps the only question left regarding gear is why you guys are not using a drone? Is it to avoid making noise in these beautiful locations (on the other hand, when you are there alone at 6.30 am having a place all to yourself, this should not be a problem). I think something like DJI Mini should be pretty compact and lightweight for your adventures. The drone could be following both of you running or showcasing the full scale of Adam's vertiginous dangles while he is snacking after a typical sufferfest :)

    • @LiveHardxLoveHard
      @LiveHardxLoveHard  9 місяців тому

      That's a really good question, and there are a few factors. US national parks don't allow drones at all, so that would take out a lot of the best areas. And then as you say, we definitely don't want to annoy others. However, we do a lot of adventures where we're completely alone and a small drone like a DJ mini would definitely give us some amazing footage, so it is very possible that we will get a drone in the future for at least some of our non-national park adventures! ❤️

      Thank you -- you're gonna LOVE those Dolomites so much, and they're amazing for filming. The 11 gives a much better and cleaner picture than the 8, but we have had a few technical issues editing the 11's 4k footage in Final Cut Pro, so it you use that editing software you might want to just stick with your 8 until the 12 comes out and hopefully they fix the glitch!

      Thanks Paul, so glad it was useful! Yes, we just got a GoPro 10 and are working out the kinks with using that right now, but it should be a nice upgrade to our tracking-shot "human gimbal" footage! A lot of people have been telling us we need to get a drone as well, and we're seriously thinking about it although it would definitely affect our ability to go ultra-light. And def try the steep Go-Pro trick -- it's the best way we've found so far to show the actual incline of terrain! ❤️

      @matt_w 2 роки тому +1

      @@LiveHardxLoveHard FWIW I'd recommend against a drone. DJI's drones give beautiful shots, but it takes minimum 4-5 minutes to take the thing out, connect to phone, launch, set up shots, etc. They're prone to fouling with trail dust and grime. A pain to haul all of the equipment. AND most of the places you'd want to use them you can't: they're strictly forbidden in all national parks. National forests generally don't allow them. Anywhere near an airport or along a flight line is prohibited. CA state parks actually do usually allow their use, but they are also loud and disruptive to other hikers and I always felt embarrassed about using mine. DJI drones are geofenced and won't even allow you to launch if you're in a prohibited area, so you'll end up having hauled the weight for nothing. It's illegal to fly them out of visual line-of-sight, at night, over people, or over 400' AGL, which restricts their utility. I ended up selling my camera drone off because it almost never made sense to actually use it. (I still love recreational FPV flying, but for its own sake not for taking footage.)
      tl;dr: You guys take great footage as is and your on-the-ground perspective is perfect for the inspirational vibe you've got going. Your whole camera set up is geared toward getting the best footage with the minimal disruption to your day on the trail and you've got that dialed in pretty well. I'd say drones are far more trouble than they're worth.

So the camera I use for all of those fast-moving tracking shots is the GoPro -- it has really amazing image stabilization, so as long as I run smoothly in a way that takes most of the bounce out of it (easier said than done on some of those rocky trails) it almost always delivers a great-looking shot. I take a lot of video on my motorcycle; and the video is great (GP8) BUT...the unit has a bad habit (10-15% of the time) of power on locking up and not responding; leaving me no choice but to pull over and remove and reinsert the battery.
