Faceswapping, Unethical Videos, and Future Shock

  • I was going to tell a science fiction story about faceswapping, and mass blackmail. Then the news broke about unethical faceswapping videos, and software designed and marketed for creating them: and I realised the future had arrived faster than I thought.
    (This was originally a talk given at An Evening of Unnecessary Detail earlier this week, but I managed to mangle the audio recording settings, so I rerecorded it in a muddy park! It's not the same without the audience, but hopefully it's close enough.)

      I'd actually compare this tech to getting off to your friends or their pictures. This is something many, many people do. And we'd consider it extremely creepy to share. There's nothing wrong with skepticism. It's already not wise to blindly trust evidence, even without sophisticated computer graphics, because evidence could still be taken out of context or manipulated in all sorts of less sophisticated ways. It's better to learn to be doubtful of everything and get comfortable with that. We might have to start judging politicians based on their performance in government rather than their private lives, but would that be so bad?

    • @0xCAFEF00D
      @0xCAFEF00D 6 років тому +25

      It's less of a problem than what Tom brings up about blackmail and other types of more personal attacks.
      Because politicians are already fraudulent. They don't hold any standard for correctness really. Sorry to bring up politics but:
      Here in Sweden all our political parties bar 1 had pro-immigration rhetoric. This was a question that got A LOT of time in media.
      The gist of the situation is that all except two has changed their mind on this.
      So they were lying.
      Now someone might suggest circumstances changed. But they didn't qualify their statements at all really. They are either weak and misleading statements or plain wrong. The goal from the government is now the EU minimum level, officially.
      If I were the one voter we'd swap all of them for people with more fear of being wrong. Difficult to achieve but after a few iterations maybe.
      This is something that's worse than corruption. With corruption you can say that they should be punished.
      Consider the impact of a scandalous affair of a politician versus something like this. Or even actual corruption. Faceswapped or not.
      Doesn't even come close. So we need to learn to judge them on thing other than the fruitless talk.
      I'm very afraid that people will take the wrong approach to this kind of problem and try to fight it. That just obscures the lack of importance in what your politicians say. You trust their party on their history. That's the only good measure you have.

    • @peterlewis2178

The large ammount of variety in data about him just makes it easier for the AI to work it's magic. And sure, you did use every frame in the reference video for this, but that is still just one source. Technological developments always race ahead of our ability to deal with them on a legal, moral and ethical level. Before Napster and BitTorrent there was "Home Taping is Killing Music" but almost twenty years later we're still arguing about the legality and ethics of sharing songs and movies online. And back then, it wasn't a concern for most people. Unless you were an up-and-coming musician, this wasn't a worry. We now have 3D printers and are starting to worry about the ownership of anything designed on a computer. We're worrying about 3D printed firearms and home-grown gene-spliced organisms. This was always a problem for humanity. Our ability to *Do* always outstrips our ability to *Undo*. The only thing is... In the past a thing like the longbow would come along, and we'd have decades before it was widespread and centuries to think about things before the next development came along. Now new developments are popping up yearly and we're not assimilating them fast enough. It makes everything more stressful and increases the heavy-handedness of the approach of lawmakers.
    But we're not dead yet.
